Just as I have loved you Jesus, John 13:34-35, NLT By the time you read this November issue of Trinity Times the 2015 Stewardship & Loyalty Campaign will be well underway. It was thrilling to watch the reaction to the I Love My Church video during our kickoff Sunday. Every single person expressed with tears, smiles, or voices of approval, Yes, we do love our church! It is such a simple yet powerful theme. And because we love our church we wish to see it grow and flourish in many ways. We hope you will prayerfully consider your financial commitment to Trinity to see the realization of the vision during this next year and that you will take the next step in your Stewardship. It will fulfill you in a way you may not yet realize. That has certainly happened for me. I was fortunate to grow up in a family where the love of God, church attendance and stewardship was woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. My parents, Dick and Jean Rudy, gave to us a legacy of demonstrating God as a priority in life and an emphasis on service to others. Bible Study, Mission trips, Stephen Ministry, Sunday School Superinten-dent, untold Committees, kitchen help, choir and teaching. You name it, they did it! Yet in spite of that, my personal involvement was never as deep. I taught, attended youth group, did some outreach and served on committees. However, it was never at the level of my parents. Then Rev. Heckaman gave Gary and me a personal call to ask if we would consider serving as co-chairs of the Stewardship & Loyalty Campaign this year. Gulp confidence level and comfort for that responsibility were not strong. Yet after prayerful consideration, Gary and I agreed. Another important personal invitation came from a friend who invited me to be part of a small group Bible Study. Sure I thought. I have always wanted to participate, but just didn t take the steps to add that to my faith journey. I agreed to try it. (Continued on page 2)
2 Orr Well, little did I know the impact that those personal invitations would have on my life. I am truly thankful to have been nudged into both of these experiences. I have learned so much and have been enriched beyond my expectations. I have been reminded again that Trinity Church is full of generous and amazing people that love their church and their God and always answer yes to any request. And I have been surrounded by awesome women in my Bible Study that support each other, are willing to question, ponder and share their faith. I have been blessed by these experiences. It reminds me that it often does take that personal invitation to have someone join you in worship, small group, or outreach. It will be life-changing for so many. It has been for me. Again, what an exciting time it is in the life our church. The Stewardship & Loyalty Campaign Committee hopes you feel the vibrancy and that you have already reflected on your financial commitment to the work of God in our church for We hope if you are able, you will increase your giving for next year. We receive so much by giving! Please complete your Christian Estimate of Giving Card by Sunday, November 23, so we can celebrate new visions realized at Trinity United Methodist Church. Thank you for your generosity. Blessings, Cover Letter Continued Barbara (and Gary) Orr Co-Chairs of Stewardship & Loyalty Campaign We have been given abundant gifts from God. We are reminded how we can be good stewards of those gifts by: The Five G s: Gathering in community of faith and inviting others to join Trinity Growing our participation in discipleship, mission and fellowship. Giving financially as Christ would desire of us, so we can grow our resources and ministry in Glorifying our amazing God by praying for others and attending weekly worship. Going out into the world and serving others as the body of Jesus Christ. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. - John 13:34-35 NLT
I Love My Church 2015 Stewardship & Loyalty Campaign Re-Cap 3 An Inspiring Vision Goals for Next Year's Growth We pray that Trinity s ministry has touched your life and the lives of your family, friends, and those in need. We are trusting God to raise an additional $90,000 to fulfill our immediate next steps in Trinity s ongoing ministry development in the following key areas. Youth Ministries, $20,000 Children's Ministries, $20, Children s Ministry For our size of church, having a full-time Director of Children s Ministries is crucial in taking care of our own families, let alone reaching new ones. Cost of taking Rev. Karen Brantley to full-time status $20,000 additional per year. 2. Web Ministry Continuing to grow our web ministry that was launched just last year, assimilating it into the General Budget of the Church, weaning it off of start-up support by our Foundation, and faithfully living into our commitment to this emerging, new mission field. What an amazing impact thus far. Our outreach is growing. Lives are being changed. Word is spreading the world over. Yet, we are just getting started in what many say is the future, committing to a congregation that we do not want to abandon and not fully serve as we our others $30,000 additional per year. 3. Youth Ministry Trinity has championed and prioritized reaching our young people for years. With the first quarter deficit, however, church funds were tight. We were recently able to re-staff the Youth Director position for an overall savings and yet get just as qualified a leadership. Numbers are strong; momentum is growing. We want to maintain our current strength and provide for even continued growth $20,000 additional per year. 4. Continued Mission and Ministry Growth; Rebuild Reserves Due to inordinate (we hope) poor Sunday morning winter weather, our first quarter contributions took a huge hit. We ve been working hard to catch up since summer. Before we head into another potentially difficult stretch, we need to replenish and build them back up. Transitioning to electronic giving can also really, really help. Richard Weese and Norm Hicks, members of our devoted Trinity staff, would be more than happy to personally walk you through the process. Raising the funds to maintain ministry growth and to rebuild reserves $20,000 additional per year. Web Ministry, $30,000 Continued Missions & Ministry Growth/Reb uild Reserves, $20,000 Christian Estimate of Giving Card You will notice we have enclosed a Christian Estimate of Giving Card for This enables you and your family to prayerfully think about your resources and your commitment to Trinity Church. We hope that you are willing to evaluate your giving in light of the other expenditures in your budget. What percentage of your total income do you set aside for God s work? Are your resources in line with the areas of your life that are most important? Does your budget reflect your priorities? Trinity is certainly a church we all love. Trinity is a church that has people doing amazing things for each other here and in the community beyond our walls. Let us continue to grow by prayerfully making an effort to increase your estimate of giving this year to support the ministry areas listed to the right. You may complete the Estimate of Giving Card and place it in the mail, in the offering plate or complete the commitment online. You may give annually, monthly, weekly or have your gift automatically deducted from your checking account or have your bank send an electronic check to the church. Feel free to call the church if you would like assistance in this.
TEACHING & TRAINING Gathering 2 The Power of You Ask, and it shall be given to you. Matthew 7:7, KJV What is the closest you have ever come to fame? Know someone who knows someone? Developed a famous patent? Published an important discovery? My near misses aren t especially significant When I was little, I appeared on the show, Romper Room. Still remember climbing into the cardboard fire truck and driving all around the set. I made it on ABC s Nightline once when the church I pastored launched a new service in a local bar. (One of the best things I ve ever participated in. Learned so much. Will have to tell you more about that sometime.) Other news outlets picked up on it too, e.g., The Bangladesh Times, The Dayton Daily News, The Bob and Tom Show, etc., etc. Got plenty of very mixed reviews, but was probably my biggest fifteen minutes of fame. And lastly, I also remember seeing both the rock group Kiss and Little Richard within just a few feet of me at the airport. That s pretty close to fame, right? I will take credit for one thing, however (by the amazing grace of God); but it will likely go down in history just between us. In taking groups to the Holy Land, I would always be bothered by one spot, The Upper Room, where Jesus performed the Last Supper. Of course, the actual room is probably buried under many layers of rubble down. What is currently called The Upper Room is from a totally different historical period though it does mark the probable spot. The Gothic arches and stone flooring are beautiful. They just would not have been present when Jesus broke the actual bread. It was virtually unattended. While the Israeli Tourism Bureau administers most sites closely, anyone could come in and do virtually anything that they pleased. I know because I did. Many a time though not officially allowed, I would sneak in the necessary elements (bread and juice) for our group so we could reenact the Lord s Supper and celebrate Holy Communion together. It was always so powerful, perhaps because it was also at least slightly illegal. So, I looked into buying it. Seriously. The Upper Room! If no one else wanted it, I thought why not someone like me or those I could recruit? I came back and was so excited. I had people in Israel looking into it. Spent some time getting a couple of bigger donors lined up. Groups from all over the world have laid claim to various sites across Israel throughout the past, now helping to take care of them for all the pilgrims that come. Why not me? Well, I came close. My interest actually spawned the Israeli Tourism Bureau to look into it. Turns out, other agencies had already laid claim to it. My inquiry made those that already had the rights to the site feel threatened. And so, they finally got their act together, and did something about it. Next time we went back, a repair project had begun. They were making enhancements for Christian visitors. Never underestimate the power of you. Live life all out. Exude personality. Live as if you have influence. And maybe, just maybe, you will by God s grace make a change in the world and someone s life. While you don t have to persuade countries, or convince notable doubters, your simple invitation can help someone experience God like never before. A whole new trajectory for someone s life can be started just by you sticking your nose out. Believe me, they will be eternally grateful for putting them in touch with a God-filled future and destiny, rather than life s other alternatives. I know. I will eternally thank God for my sister, who got me to youth group despite my excuses and attitude. She risked my favor, or lack thereof, and stuck to her own conviction in still going no matter if I thought what she was doing was cool or not. Live with substance. Use The Power of You. YOU can truly change the world. In Christ Alone, Chris
The Trinity Reach 1. At any one given time, be praying for at least three friends, colleagues, or family members to take the next step forward in their own faith journey. 2. Look for strategic opportunities to reach out to them with simple acts of kindness or conversation. 3. Invite them along with you in your own spiritual journey, e.g., church, an event, outing, dinner, etc. Look for ways to build deeper relationships. Share your life. Your contagious, others-inspiring faith is bound to wear-off in all the best of ways! Excerpts from Why Nobody Wants to Be Around Christians Anymore by Thom and Joani Schultz Like it or not, recent studies and surveys tell us the majority of people view Christians as judgmental, condemning, hypocritical, and in too many ways to count unloving. George Gallup, Jr. and Michael Lindsay have identified six basic needs of every person: 1. The need to believe life is meaningful and has a purpose. 2. The need for a sense of community and relationships. 3. The need to be listened to and to be heard. 4. The need to feel one is growing in faith. 5. The need to be appreciated and respected. 6. The need for practical help in developing a mature faith. Make no mistake, people crave what Jesus offers. People may be pushing back other Christians, but they are hungering for God. Consider these statistics: 91% say they believe in God. 88% say faith is important. 64% are open to pursuing their faith in an environment different from a typical church. People truly want God. Welcome to Irresistible Highlights from a recent sermon given by Dr. Heckaman on John 1:35-47 How to reach others with the love of Christ in a nonthreatening and enjoyable way to our circle of friends and family 1. Develop a contagious, others-inspiring personal faith. We can t invite others to what we haven t experienced. 2. Take advantage of strategic opportunities, and invite others to come along with you. The best we have to offer isn t a slick program, however. It s you. 3. Work your connections, and take time to make new ones. The longer we are in the church, the more our friendship circle is restricted to the church, and the more therefore we have to free up some of our schedule and look for ways to develop new ones. 4. Bring them to a place of encounter, and let Jesus do what Jesus does. In verse 45 on, Jesus basically said, Game on and took it from there. 5. Be able to share what Christ means to you. It doesn t have to be some fancy theological argument, just a genuine testimony of faith, e.g., Jesus is a friend I never knew I could have, a Strength that has gotten me through every storm, a Love that has overcome every fault, a Hope that s proven Himself every new day.
THRIVE! Youth News Thrive! is off to a great start this season! In addition to the regular Sunday evening worship, we've also been able to connect with youth during the week for their extended lunch. Speaking of food, forty youth attended this year's Progressive Dinner in early October! November is filled with exciting activities like the Battle of the Bands (11/7), our first Destination Unknown outing of the year (11/22), our Facial Hair competition (11/23), and the Hanging of the Greens (11/30). We're excited about the events, but more than that we're excited about the level of energy and enthusiasm at Trinity! Gathering, Growing, Giving, Glorifying, Going "Trinity Ministry Teams and Committee Updates/Highlights Hospitality - We had a great Fall Cook Out even with having to change the venue to accommodate threatening weather. Final numbers aren't in, but it looks like it may have been one of our biggest yet. Kudos for the team making it free for all. In addition, we celebrate who are exploring membership in the new member class. Crossroads - While there is always something exciting going on, obviously the biggest news is the restart of our 9:00 Crossroads service led by Don Day. 56 were in worship for our first Sunday. Mission - seeking to deepen, not just widen, our missional focus - "feeding the hungry, educating children, and nursing the sick." Planning promotion of opportunities for the congregation to participate in mission. Organizing continuing education for leaders. Adult Discipleship - launching "trinity groups" within the congregation, planning congregation-wide small group connection events, refining focus of what it means to be in a "small group" and "Sunday school." Trustees - celebrated the replacement of the AC Chiller and making final arrangements for the steeple repair. Staff Parish - helping get new youth staff assimilated and up to speed. Lots of excitement. Updating social media and safe sanctuary policies. Finance - sought to address first quarter shortfall. Have made good progress. Not there yet but getting closer. SPEC - Strategic Planning - convened and started developing a plan to assess progress in fulfilling Trinity s mission and vision. Reviewed past progress and began initiating next season of planning and progress. Stewardship and Loyalty - made plans to launch I Love My Church. Hoping to raise an additional 90k to support our growing web, children, youth and other Trinity Church ministries, along with rebuilding necessary reserves. Foundation - approved a funding plan to continue to support the web ministry for continued growth but phasing out support as general church budget support kicks in.
Mission The Mexico VIM Trip Update (Volunteers in Mission) A team of almost 20(!!) Trinity servant-leaders are headed to the Manos Juntas Medical Clinic in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, in just a few months, from January 14-18, 2015; and we need your support! We ll spend three full days providing much-needed medical care to the people of Nuevo Progreso and the surrounding villages, where there are about two doctors for every 1,000 people. Our Thursday clinic is located at Flama de la Verdad in Buenavista. Our Friday clinic will take place at Senda de la Vida Migrant Facility. Our Saturday clinic, complete with triage and pharmacy, will take place at El Buen Pastor Methodist Church in the Colonia Francisco Madera on the outskirts of Nuevo Progreso. In addition to providing medical care to the people of Nuevo Progreso, our team will focus on building relationships with patients of all ages, especially the many children who visit the clinics. Most important to us is our ability to be witnesses to the love of Jesus, our Teacher who healed the bodies of those he encountered so that they might receive the Spirit. We invite you to be part of our adventure; in two key ways. Please prayerfully consider how you might be involved. Our ministry would not be possible without your support! 1. Prayer: Our team will be traveling in Mexico from January 14-18, 2015; but we need your prayers to go before us as we prepare, to travel with us as we serve, and to continue for the people of Mexico long after we are gone. Please pray that our journey will be a time of deep learning and growing for all involved. We would like to know that we can count on your prayerful partnership in this area. 2. Financial Support: A trip like ours requires the financial support of a great many people. We will need to purchase medicine and medical supplies to stock the Clinic and basic toiletries for patients. Funding will also support the work of Dra. Marysol, the Clinic doctor who provides continuing care for the community. We would like to raise $4,000 for this purpose. If you would like to support us financially, you have a few options. A. You may make an in-kind donation; we are collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste, and gift cards to Wal-Mart and Sam s Club (which will be used to purchase medicines and toiletries. B. You may give online via PayPal, by navigating to C. You may make a check payable to Trinity UMC with VIM Trip 2015 in the memo line, and mail it to Trinity UMC, 1581 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, Ohio Grace and peace are yours in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Katy
BOB Packing Day Friday, Dec. 5 One of the most popular and rewarding serving opportunities of the year. There are two parts to the day: morning unloading of the food and supplies from the Kroger truck, and then early afternoon packing of BOB Boxes. Join us as we fill BOB boxes with food and enjoy fellowship. This is a wonderful family opportunity; children of all ages are encouraged to participate. Make this a memorable life lesson for your children by teaching them the gift of giving and participating firsthand in God s work. Delivery Day Saturday, Dec. 8 AM We ll load our 500 BOB Boxes onto the truck to be delivered to Broad Street UMC. This is a great opportunity for middle and high school youth to show off their muscle while engaging in service. Distribution Day Saturday, Dec. 13 Twenty-five or more Trinity servants are needed to distribute the BOB Boxes at the Broad Street UMC. Area families of need will come to Broad Street, and volunteers direct them through the process and carry the BOB Boxes to their vehicles. Dress casually and festively ( tis the season!). For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. Jesus, Mt. 25:35 14 Years of with Bethlehem on Broad! By Tim Farber and Tim Wiseman, Bethlehem on Broad (BoB) Shepherds Bethlehem on Broad (BOB) Street is almost here! This life-giving ministry has served Columbus area families in need during the Christmas season for more than 19 years. For fourteen years at Christmas, Trinity partners with area churches to purchase, pack, and distribute 1,200 food boxes of food for our Columbus neighbor families. We also strive to support BOB s transitional housing project, The Inn at Broad Street. Trinity s goal is to provide 500 food boxes more than 40% of the total number of boxes distributed! The food boxes, affectionately called BOB boxes, are sponsored and packaged through the financial and volunteer support of Trinity s members and friends. They feed a family of four (4) for three meals (3) for four days (4). Trinity s support of and leadership in BOB extends back to Though he was battling terminal cancer, Mike Johnson a Trinity member and leader in the Life Builder group for young adults motivated us to get involved. Mike passed away in August 2001, so we help continue his legacy through BOB. Thanks to Mike s leadership, we re passionate about serving our neighbors through this special outreach ministry. If you ve participated in the past, you know how special BOB is! If you have yet to participate, we invite you to join in this tremendous project to help feed families in central Ohio. There are many ways to get involved: 1. Save the dates for packing, delivering, and distributing BOB boxes. (Dates are listed at left). 2. Give the gift of a whole box ($75) or partial box ($37.50) or two! Gifts of all amounts are welcome. Your gift buys the BOB box AND helps provide for part of one night s stay at the Inn on Broad Street. Now through Sunday, December 7th, donations can be made at the BOB tables outside the Sanctuary and, placed in the offering plate, or mailed into the Trinity Office. Make checks payable to Trinity UMC with BOB Box in the Memo line. When you give, we ll give you a BOB Box Card, a great way to share your BOB Box donation as a gift to a loved-one during this holiday season. We encourage you to join us in remembering and serving our neighbors in need this Christmas. With the gifts and prayers of many people, we can make this fourteenth year with BOB a success! Thanks in advance for your support and efforts to impacts the lives of our Columbus family! With questions, or to volunteer, please contact Tim Wiseman at or timwiseman85@gmail.com.
