1 The Voice of Service Volume 48, Issue 3 Lutheran Women s Missionary League, Oklahoma District Fall 2015 Serve the Lord with Gladness Ps.100:2 Oklahoma s Patti Ross Elected LWML President The voting body of the LWML Convention elected Patti Ross, Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the new LWML President. President Ross encouraged the women of the LWML to embrace diversity as they are unified in faith. Asked why she was passionate about this organization, President Ross said, Many people have heard me say that LWML is the best women's auxiliary of any denomination in the Christian church. It is the whole package! In almost 75 years it has kept the main thing the main thing! The saving Gospel message of Jesus Christ is in the center of all we do, be it mission inspiration, service, or monetary support of missions. This is our motivation and our mission! 2 The Voice of Service SONshine from Susan Page 2. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:16 ESV). Susan Brunkow, President If it doesn t affect someone s salvation, don t worry about it! -Ida Mall, LWML President This quote should be printed, framed, and placed in every church office, kitchen, narthex, home office, on the dash of your car, and many other places also. Our human nature seems to want to scream when somebody does something that is wrong, whether it s making the coffee too strong, too weak, or just not making it at all. What happens in your church? Is there a scene, a scolding, hard feelings, or a cold shoulder? Maybe they just quit coming to church? This may seem like an exaggeration, but is it really? Many of us are aware of times when there has been a situation about something that really does not matter. Too much emphasis is put on judging and the Law. We aren t perfect, yet we seem to expect others to be perfect. What is more important? Obviously what is most important in our life is Gospel. God sent His only Son to take our place under the Law and our debt has been paid. We are forgiven! Ephesians 1:7 tells us In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace. Wow! This should fill us with joy and celebration, certainly not with judgment and criticisms. Forgive the bad coffee, or the spoons put in the wrong drawer, or the picture that wasn t quite centered on the wall. If it doesn t affect someone s salvation, don t worry about it! Shine On! God s blessings, President Susan Brunkow, oklwmlpres@gmail.com Dear Ladies of LWML, From the Moerbes Editor s note: Recently a baby shower was held for Rev. Ned and Mary Moerbe, celebrating the birth of their twin daughters, Anastasia and Dorothea, in conjunction with LWML Oklahoma District Board of Directors meeting. Thank you so much for the kind and generous baby shower! We were so touched and encouraged and courage is something that we needed. With thanks to God we are settling into a new normal, but only after I have learned a very personal lesson about the power of prayers by the men and women in our Lord s Church. Our Lord has listened and shown us much mercy and compassions. Learning to wait on the Lord can be such a literal thing! But learning practicing every day to remember the God who shares in our burdens and is with us in suffering is itself a blessing. We pray you share in our joy and can someday meet our sweet, precious girls, whom you have loved and served with your gifts and prayers! In thanks to God for you all! Mary and all the Moerbes: Ned, Elizabeth, Evangeline, Margaret, Michael, Anastasia and Dorothea From Concordia Seminary Editor s note: Received response to the funding of District grant #12: International Graduate Student Support, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you for your wonderful donation of $6,000.00! Your prayers and financial support are great blessings. Your gift is already at work on behalf of Concordia Seminary s ministry of preparing the church s future pastors, missionaries, deaconesses and leaders. On behalf of the entire seminary community, thank you! The last weeks of the academic year are especially energizing. They include Call Day and Graduation. Those you have prepared for the Holy Ministry will soon embrace their first calls. Still others will begin their vicarage assignments. Your prayers and gifts to Concordia Seminary are mightily blessed by the Lord. Direct gifts like yours provide over 60 percent of the seminary s support. This ministry would simply not be possible without caring Christians like you. Most cordially yours, Dale A. Meyer, Ph.D., President Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo.

3 Volume 48, Issue 3 Page 3 Special Gifts Fund Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Cor. 9:7-8 While looking through old recipes for something to prepare for our fellowship time between Church and Sunday school, I ran across the cookbook for the Eternal Stainless Steel cookware purchased in Needless to say, the cookbook outlasted some of the cookware. We all have stuff we have collected over the years. Does our stuff bring glory to God? Is this what we want to leave for others, only to be thrown away? The Special Gifts Fund is a perfect way to give back to God and leave a legacy for generations to come. It was set up as an endowment to provide for the current and future needs of the Oklahoma District Board of Directors in its mission endeavors. This fund may accept gifts and bequest from any individual, firm or corporation, in money, in securities, or in any other form of property. Gifts may be in the form of endof-life planning or short-term giving. These gifts may be in memory of any deceased person or in appreciation or recognition of any living person. Each gift will be recognized to the giver and the recipient or the family of a deceased loved one. The Special Gifts Fund received in the past quarter gifts in memory of Norma Zimmerman, Kay Williams, and Lorraine Kise, and in honor of Marguerite Christman on the occasion of her birthday. It also received from the Recycling Fund $ Gifts may be sent to Oklahoma District LWML Financial Secretary, Leola Thiemann, P.O. Box 2326, Stillwater, OK Free resources to help you in your prayerful planning are available through LWML. If you have questions, contact Krystine Gibson, Chairman. Temper and Nerves Submitted by Krystine Gibson, Special Gifts Chairman Food for the Soul Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep And doesn t know where to find them. Leave them alone, and they ll come home Wagging their tails behind them. Remember that nursery rhyme? It has no significance for my life, but it made me think how thankful I am that our Shepherd, Jesus Christ, doesn t lose us, or leave us alone! It s just the opposite. In Matt. 28:20, Jesus says, and surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age. In fact, He laid down His life to assure His sheep will have a place with Him in heaven eternally! Even when we stray, He is always there to bring us back; it s never up to us to find our way back home. Submitted by Pam Wiederkehr, Vice President of Christian Life Pastoral Insights I know that a violent temper is wrong, a person might say, but what can be done about controlling it? A Christian's aim in life must be to become more like Christ. As we draw closer to Jesus, we want to develop habits like His. Our Lord was capable of anger, even severe anger. He was angry with the money changers in the temple. He was angry with the Pharisees. But His indignation was always controlled. He became angry for a good purpose. Jesus has told us that we should love our neighbor. The danger in uncontrolled anger is that we forget love. Uncontrolled anger may burn up some excess adrenalin and relieve the pressure inside, but then a new pressure develops this pressure of regret over our ill-considered actions, and regret over the hurt which we may have caused a neighbor. St. James wrote in the first chapter of his letter, verses 19 and 20: Know this, my beloved brothers, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. St. Paul added in the fourth chapter of Ephesians, If you are angry, be sure that it is not out of wounded pride or bad temper. Never go to bed angry don't give the devil that sort of foothold. It is common for children to display their anger quite openly. As they outgrow childhood, most people learn not to have displays of temper in front of others. Still others, remembering that God sees everything they do, have to educate themselves against displays of temper before God or man. Is nervousness in any way caused by lack of faith? a person might say. If so, how can one overcome this? The causes of nervousness are varied and complex. There is no need to discuss those causes, some of which are mental and others physical in origin. (Continued on page 7)

5 Volume 48, Issue 3 Through the District and Beyond Page 5 Bring your own GLAD Bag The District Convention Planning Committee and the Host Committee are busy planning and preparing for the LWML Oklahoma District Convention 2016 to be held at the Marriott-Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 15-16, The theme of the convention is we are Glad! based on Psalm 126:2-3, Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, The Lord had done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad. For this convention, all participants are asked to bring their own GLAD Bag. So get those creative juices flowing, brainstorm with your society sisters, and make a unique bag to carry all the convention papers and treasures! Have fun and come decked out to show you are GLAD, with your very own GLAD bag! Be watching on under the Meetings and Conventions tab. 6 Lutheran Emergency Response Team (LERT) Trailer Funded, Purchased, Deployed for OK Disaster Response Though a generous LWML Oklahoma District mission grant, the LCMS Oklahoma District Disaster Response purchased and equipped a trailer for deployment to a disaster area when the need arises within the Oklahoma District. Following such disasters in our state as the Woodward tornado, April 2012, and the Moore tornado, May 2013, concern rose over the ability of our District to respond to the relief, recovery, and rebuilding needs of those affected by such disaster. Above: Don Arnhart, Tool and Trailer Coordinator for the DDRC, checks equipment for chainsaw work in the Bridge Creek area. The Voice of Service District Mission Updates While our District was well -equipped to respond to spiritual, monetary, and material needs of those in the path of both natural and manmade storms of life, needs such as debris removal, house rebuild, and the clearing of damaged vegetation remained challenges. Through careful planning and wise use of the grant dollars raised by the LWML Oklahoma District (Mission Grant #1), a trailer was purchased, equipped, and was deployed this past spring to respond to the needs of the Bridge Creek community following the May 6 tornado. Thanks to the visionary and generous support of the League, this trailer will provide initial tools and resources local congregations will need and use as they plan, organize, and deliver mercy to a hurting community in the wake of a critical event, says Rev. Ron Simpson, OK Disaster Response Coordinator. Page 6 Above: The LCMS OK District Disaster Response trailer, fully equipped, was deployed for the first time to the community of Bridge Creek following the May 6 tornado. Equipping of the trailer is ongoing as the needs of the District change. When disaster strikes, congregations desiring to respond to the needs of their community should contact Oklahoma District Disaster Response Coordinator Rev. Ronald Simpson, Good Shepherd, Midwest City. Arrangements will be made for the congregation to secure the trailer, tools, and a LERT team, if necessary, to assist congregations in meeting the needs of their members and greater community. Trusting His Plans to Bloom Where We are Planted At the May LWML Oklahoma District Board of Director s meeting attendees were given baggies of seeds and instructed to exchange the seeds in the baggies with others in their small groups as they reflected on the unexpected turns in their lives through which God s plans seem to take them. They were challenged to plant those flower seeds, not knowing what kind, not knowing the right season for planting them, but waiting patiently to see what would bloom, much as we wait patiently to see how God will work His plans in our lives. Kristine Gibson, Special Gifts Chairman, found sunflowers blooming next to her mailbox. Stay tuned for more colorful possibilities, reminders of God s unexpected miracles as we follow His plans for our lives. Submitted by Karen Karner, TVOS Newsletter Editor

7 Volume 48, Issue 3 Page 7 YOUR MITES IN ACTION: BRIDGE PARK MINISTRIES Bridge Park Ministry, recipient of a LWML Oklahoma District mission grant, began in September, 2009, to serve those in need in Lawton. Every Saturday hot meals are served to meet physical needs while the Gospel is provided to meet spiritual needs of the community. By God's grace, over 10,000 meals have been served, and 33,000 diapers and countless clothing items have been distributed. Children have been provided knowledge of Jesus through Bible stories, craft projects and games. Bridge Park Ministries is about taking Christ to the people. The Holy Spirit moves in and through the volunteers every Saturday, allowing them to become the hands and feet of Christ to those in need in the Lawton community. Many have been led to the Lord and continue to come to be spiritually fed every Saturday. Two baptism services have occurred over the last two summers where many people, young and old, were baptized in the park, in full view of passersby, using a water trough filled by the local fire department. Keep Bridge Park Ministries in prayer as they work to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the community of Lawton. Visit their website at to find out more about their ministry, and plan to meet with them at the Lawton Fall Fest, October 3. Serving the Needs of His People It s time once again. Box those quilts, health kits and school kits. God s people are in need! October 6, 2015, zones will transport their LWR donations to 2555 Hyacinth Lane (I-235 and 25th Street North), Wichita, Kansas. Drivers/teams are asked to remain in place until noon to assist with packing LWR s semi truck. Societies are asked to provide a copy of their LWR tally sheet to their zone presidents who, in turn, are asked to forward a consolidated listing to Sharon Bomhoff, Chairman, Mission Servants Committee, oklwmlms@gmail.com, by October 19, 2015, for presentation of totals to the Board of Directors. The LWML Oklahoma District is blessed to be involved in the LWR ministry, allowing us to extend the Kingdom of God to those in need. Tally sheets and packing instructions are posted under Mission Servants, Available for download at Two years of thematic monthly meeting plans. Icebreakers, devotions, Bible studies, servant projects, and sketches. Look for it under The Word, then Program helps. Pastoral Insights (Continued from page 3) There are people with spiritual problems which may give them a first-class case of what is described with the broad word "nervousness." In this case, the problem does not arise from lack of sleep or relaxation or from failure to watch proper exercise or diet. Closely associated with nervousness is worry. Our Lord dealt with that problem in His Sermon on the Mount: O men of little faith, do not be anxious saying What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you have need of them all. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. Our Lord made it explicitly clear that the cure for worry is to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. By concentrating on strengthening your faith, all the other things in one s life will be taken care of. If that's what one is nervous about, faith is the answer. This much is sure: the more we allow God to take over our lives, the less nervous strain we put on ourselves, for nervousness has a way of filling up the vacuum caused by lack of faith. Rev. Ron Simpson, Senior Pastoral Counselor
