The business agenda included the adoption of the biennial mission grants, election of officers, and by-law changes. Stepping out in faith, a goal of $80,000 was approved for mission grants for the biennium. Guest speakers included the following: Knowing how capable the LWML is at attaining their Mite goals for missions, Rev. Paul Hartman, Oklahoma District LCMS President, delighted everyone when he held up a penny and threw it into the audience saying: I can t believe you all missed one! Cindy Newkirk, Bible study leader and vineyard owner in CA, used the analogy of the grafting of a bud to the grapevine to our being grafted into the Vine of Christ. Dr. William Diekelman, VP of the LCMS, used the phrase women as earthen pots vessels God uses to serve him. LWML women were active with servant activities on Friday morning. They wrapped 525 books in Christmas wrap for under privileged children Kendall- Whitter School in Tulsa. Six Braille books of Leviticus, sixty-one pages long, were made and assembled for the Braille Center in Tulsa. One hundred school backpacks for the Mexico mission were packed which will be taken to Mexico via Cristo Rey in OKC. Busy servant hands also created 47 sets of flash cards, or approximately 900 cards, to help teach English in China and Guatemala. The Mite activity at the Gospel Outreach booth and Friday evening worship service offerings totaled $2, which will be used for the biennial mission grants. Marilyn Alsip, Archivist/Historian and Ebba Johnson, Archivist/Historian Emeritus for the District, presented the newly published book: 80 years ( ) Reflections of the Oklahoma District Lutheran Women s Missionary League to the District. The book is filled with facts, pictures, minutes and trivia chronicling the Oklahoma District s distinction of being the oldest in the nation. Busy wrapping Christmas books for the Kendall Whittier students during the servant activities. From left: Donna Boggs, Cheryl Davison, Cherry Volberding, and Jane Liljegren. Rev. Paul Hartman, Oklahoma District LCMS President, during his address holds up a penny he found and said, I can t believe you missed this one. The convention was interrupted, bringing laughter from the audience, several times with women donning period hats and information about the District s past. The convention was adjourned with Patti Ross, outgoing president turning the podium over to Bev England, newly elected District President. At the close of the convention a special Thanksgiving service was led by Rev. Barrie Henke. During the service a special offering, totaling $ , was collected as societies from across the District brought donations for the Special Gifts Fund to commemorate our 80 years in mission. 2 The Voice of Service Page 2 Presidential Passage It s a wrap! Yes, that is what I heard a few short weeks ago as the LWML District Convention came to a close. The last box lid was in place, cars were loaded and as I turned to look at the now empty Claremore Expo Center I could hear echoes of the few that remained to turn down the lights and do one last turn through the premises. Only a few hours before, the place was filled with happy faces, sisters getting in that one last hug, and voices singing and praising God! Joy and laughter filled that huge space that now was empty. I thought of the many hours of work from the Miami Zone women that went into this labor of love! With joy, I thought of the celebrating that had taken place there. Yes, Lutheran Women in Mission of Oklahoma celebrating joy in serving for the past 80 years! Eighty years of loving and giving all for the sake of Jesus! Reaching out to those near and far who are in need. Not because they had to do it, but because of the mission hearts of these wonderful women that came before us and will come after us. Holding up the cross of Jesus our Risen Savior by giving to others with a happy heart and loving hand! The convention theme, Fruit that will Last John 15:16, was truly appropriate because the women of Oklahoma have done just that and continue to bear the fruit of giving; fruit that continues to thrive in Oklahoma and beyond! Now we move forward into a new biennium, with some newly acquired and some familiar faces on our LWML Board of Directors. At our short postconvention board meeting, as I shared my DREAM TEAM theme with these wonderful servants, I could already see excitement and anticipation on their faces. In the months ahead, we will vision, plan and work together in the vineyard provided for us by our Lord Jesus! As I shared with them and I now share with you In Christ we are Devoted Redeemed Exclaiming His Love Together Active in prayer and service with Everyone Mission hearts alive! Accomplishes More The DREAM TEAM will continue to bear fruit, because of our loving Savior, fruit that will last! YOU are all a part of this incredible DREAM TEAM! Welcome aboard LWML ers for an enriching and joyful turn around the vineyard! Your sister in Christ, The Pres.. Bev Food for the Soul We are currently using a devotional Why Pray? By John F. DeVries. This is a great little book and certainly makes you check your prayer life. Here is an excerpt from the book: What does it mean to walk with God as Enoch did? Think for a moment about walking. What happens if you try to use only your right foot while your left foot is planted firmly on the ground? You go around in circles, going nowhere! The same thing happens if you try walking with your left foot, except that you go around in circles the other way. In order to get anywhere, you need to use both feet. Prayer and work are two spiritual feet God has given us, and we need to use both of them. In fact, being close to God in prayer always results in our receiving work to do What work have you received to do today? Debbie Tabisz, VP of Christian Life History Hunt On what page in the newly published book, 80 Years Reflections of the Oklahoma District Lutheran Women's Missionary League can this fact be found? The total amount of fruit and vegetables collected was 1,085 quarts. Cash collected was $ Professor G.C. Schroedel of the Orphan Home was the speaker. The Mission Project collection of $77 for the Children s Friend Society and $150 was given to the mission projects in Oklahoma. The tenth person who s Patti Ross with the correct answer will receive a small gift from the LWML Store p.ross@cox.net. Marilyn Alsip, Archivist-Historian

We know the Lord has great plans as you join the LWML in mission! Mark Your Calendars! The theme of the Zone Fall Fests will be Fruit that will Last based on John 15:16. You did not chose me, but I chose you and appointed you to bear fruit fruit that will last. Bible study, elections (officers, delegates to 2009 LWML Convention in Portland, OR, nomination committee members), Gifts of the Heart for LWR collection, and special speakers will all be a part of the Zone Fall Fests. The following is a list of where they will be held. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend and join your sisters in Christ as we gather in our zones. Enid Zone August 23 at Zion in Alva Kingfisher Zone September 13 at Our Savior in Guthrie Lawton Zone September 13 at Good Shepherd in Duncan Miami Zone September 27 at Redeemer in Bartlesville Oklahoma City Zone September 20 at Immanuel in Oklahoma City Panhandle Zone September 27 at Hope in Boise City Ponca City Zone September 20 at St. John s in Newkirk Tulsa Zone September 20 at Christ the Redeemer in Tulsa Oklahoma District Zone Zips Enid Zone The convention was attended by 16 women from the Enid Zone. We had one first-timer and all enjoyed it. One society has hosted its annual confirmation, graduates and new member dinner. They recognized new members, graduates, confirmands, and this year baptized individuals. Gifts were purchased at convention from the LWML store. We are hoping for a large attendance at the Enid Fall Fest in Alva on August 23 as we will be inviting all the ladies in the congregations. Beth Schoeling, Zone President Lawton Zone St. John in Lawton was blessed to have seven women and one vicar attend the convention. Kathie Gerdes from Granite was also in attendance. The Lawton Fall Fest will be held in Duncan, with date to be announced. Leola Thiemann, Zone President Kingfisher Zone The societies in the zone have been busy with a variety of activities. The eight societies that make up the Miami zone are all relatively small in membership numbers. However, their gumption is unrivaled! They have brought forth the fruit...and will remain. Patricia Hinkel, Zone President Panhandle Zone The work taking place in the Panhandle can be summarized with these words; mites, quilts, kits, and helping hands. Pastoral Insights Recycling Update New Items Needed for Recycling Page 5 Can you believe it? It has been only a month since our District LWML Convention in Claremore! What a great time we had! What great convention hosts! What great speakers! What great fellowship! And what a great theme: Fruit That Will Last! When our Lord Jesus spoke those words, recorded in John 15:16, He emphasized that the only way we could bear lasting fruit was to stay attached to Him, the True Vine. The Holy Spirit enables us to stay attached. As we stay attached, the Holy Spirit sends spiritual nutrients into our soul enabling us to be fruit bearing. He gives to us the nutrient of the Holy Scriptures to guide us and inspire us. He gives to us the nutrient of Holy Communion wherein we feed on the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus strengthening us by His forgiveness of our sins. And He gives to us the nutrient of Holy Baptism as we recall how the Spirit embraced us, with His grace, making us God s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do the works He has prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). As a strong branch that is well-fed by the nutrients of God s grace, we will be able to bear much fruit and lasting fruit. The Apostle Paul explains in Galatians 5:22-23, the lasting fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. In reading that list it is evident that each one of those fruits of the Spirit has lasting quality! It is a lasting quality that is possible only as we live by the Spirit and keep in step with the Spirit. As we live as a branch attached to the True Vine - Jesus, then we will be empowered to bear the fruit basket that Paul writes about. And in bearing them, people will see Jesus in us! Then we are dealing with lasting fruit, fruit that passes on to new circles within our church, community, and the LWML. Looking back over the 80-year history of the Oklahoma District LWML, lasting fruit is a great blessing which we enjoy today. May God s Holy Spirit work in us and through us, that we, too, might be lasting fruit-bearers for Christ s kingdom work. With Joy in Jesus, Pastor Barrie Henke Oklahoma District LWML Senior Counselor Thank you for all your efforts in the past in our recycling project. These efforts are helping our environment. This has also helped tremendously in the LWML providing funds for LWML Mites, OK District Special Gifts and many other leader training ministries and opportunities here within the OK District. By your efforts, we have been blessed with collecting over $47,000 since this effort began in November of Thanks to you and many others. The recycling possibilities continue to increase. Many entities are now recycling printer cartridges. Therefore, the reimbursement on these items has decreased with the flood in the market. In addition to recycling Ink jet and Laser jet printer cartridges, cell phones have become significant items to recycle. It is estimated that there are 65 million cell phones stockpiled in U.S. households. This will create approximately 30 tons of potentially hazardous waste. On average, Americans replace their cell phones every 18 months. There are also many other items available in this portable/electronic age that are recyclable. It is almost to the point if it is electronic and portable, it is recyclable. Here is an updated list for you to add to your recycling efforts. Recycle These Items -- Ink Jet Printer Cartridges (No Epsons) Laser Jet Printer Cartridges Cell Phones (Do not send cords) Pagers PDAs (Palm Pilots, Blackberries) Laptop Computers (Include auxiliaries including cords) I-Pods DVD Video games and portable players MP3 Players Digital Cameras Remember, to protect your items by packing them tight. You want to protect them from any damage that may occur in shipping. After you have your items wrapped and packed into the shipping box be sure to pack it tightly with newspaper or bubble wrap. Let me know when you need pre-paid shipping labels and I will get them sent to you as soon as possible. Again, thanks for all your recycling hard work. Praise God for blessing these efforts. May it be to His glory. Marguerite Christman, Recycling Coordinator

7 Volume 41 Issue 3 Young Women Thirteen young women attended the convention and participated in various events. These included a devotional walk, special servant activity of making note cards, and amazing speakers. To the young women s delight, former LWML Presidents, Linda Reiser and Virginia Von Seggern,VP of Communication, Sandy Hardies, and Bible study leader Cindy Newkirk shared time and insight with the YWR s. Two of the young women also helped with child care and the teen activities. A big thank you to Jennifer Biggers YWR Committee member, for creating a beautiful display for the YWR booth. Charity and Jennifer, our LWML Young Women Representatives at the Sioux Fall Convention, gave encouragement and advice to other young women who would like to become a YWR for the Oklahoma District. I am pleased to report that at least two of these young women are planning to apply for YWR for the 2009 LWML Convention in Portland, Oregon. A Teen LWML gathering was held at Our Savior in Tulsa on Sunday, February 24, Teens and adults attended from two churches, Grace and Our Savior. Meeting since late 2007 the teen group from Grace have been involved in several service projects Our Savior is interested in establishing a group with the support of their LWML society there. A new teen group has been established at Faith in Owasso under the direction of Kari Clark. The group s first meeting was in April and they plan to meet every other month. Eight teens attended the Oklahoma District Convention in Claremore. On Friday evening a get-acquainted icebreaker was enjoyed after the worship service. On Saturday the teens participated in several servant activities, sang songs, and took a reflective walk. They joined the convention proceedings for the Bible study and keynote speaker. During lunch, the teens met with Marguerite Christman, Sandy Hardies, and Cindy Newkirk. Currently, eight societies are sponsoring Teen LWML groups: Good Shepherd, Midwest City; Trinity, Ardmore; Messiah and Immanuel, Oklahoma City; Christ the Redeemer and Grace, Tulsa; Trinity, Norman; Faith, Owasso. Delia Hansen, Teen LWML Coordinator You can view convention photos at: Check out the special singing of the 80th Anniversary Song written and sung by our one and only Rev. Barrie Henke and his choir on view_video.php?viewkey=1ae3ffd7e4369c2d8795. This Out Audrey House, VP of Communication Yes---we do collect Stamps for Missions! The program is on-going and we urge all to USE commemorative stamps on their out going mail. These are stamps of value to collectors. Used stamps for collection should be clipped from envelopes, leaving a quarter inch space around ALL edges. The stamps should not be damaged in any way. Stamps may be brought to your local LWML meetings, gathered with others and brought to any District meeting. We will see that our stamp lady, Evelyn Jones in Cushing gets them. What a servant she is. Evelyn painstakingly trims stamps to the proper ¼ Stamps for Missions inch, sorts them into denominations and kinds, weighs each kind and mails them to Swan Philatelic Imports where they are readied for sale to stamp collectors. Funds received for the stamps are used for Mites. Not all stamps are valuable enough to warrant the postage to mail them to the philatelic company or are they of value to stamp collectors. Please DO NOT save common flag, love, Christmas or bulk mailing stamps. All canceled commemorative stamps are valuable, in addition to foreign, old stamps (such as those in old stamp collections), U.S. Hi Values ( higher than current postal rates), U.S. Priority Mail or Express Mail, Federal Duck Stamps-Mint and U.S. Coil stamps with plate numbers (have no perforations on top or bottom and have a number, normally a series in the bottom right corner). As an example, commemorative stamps are worth $14.00 /lb. Evelyn s last mailing, though small, brought a check for $ We thank Evelyn for all the work she does for us and her Lord she has a real heart for MISSIONS. So do save those stamps. Every bit done to reach those who do not know Christ as their Savior, or need His helping hand is worth the little stamp saved! Marilyn Laramy, Special Gifts
