4 53rd World Day of Prayer for Vocations On the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Christians are invited to reflect on the meaning of God's call and to pray for vocations. Christ the Good Shepherd continues to lead his people through his Bishops, Priests and Deacons, and calls many to follow him in this way. Priestly, diaconal, and religious vocations should be a constant concern in the hearts of God's people throughout the year. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Pray for the priests and consecrated, both living and dead, who have ministered to you throughout your life. Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. Pray for our seminarians and diaconate candidates. Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our archdiocese to respond to God s call. Pray a Hail Mary for vocations with every meal. Offer your sufferings for an increase in priestly and religious vocations. There is an ancient tradition of offering up suffering to God, beginning in the Old Testament and culminating with the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Join thousands of saints who have offered up their suffering for spiritual gain and encourage those who are homebound, in hospitals and nursing homes to join their suffering with Christ to intercede for vocations to the priesthood. Holy Hour for Vocations We are often asked to pray for vocations, but how? Certainly we should do so in our daily intentions as well as at Mass. Sometimes, though, holding a special Holy Hour for Vocations provides a more intensive focus for our intercession: as we join in adoration of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, we earnestly ask him to send more laborers into the harvest. Join an Invisible Monastery The invisible monastery is an international effort to pray for more vocations to priesthood and religious life. It was inspired by a call from Rome urging Catholics to organize an invisible monastery in which many persons, day and night, are committed to continuous prayer for priestly vocations. To enroll, visit Choose your diocese from the drop-down menu, and pledge to pray daily or weekly. Prayer for Vocations God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

5 P ope Francis has issued his Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), in conclusion of the Synods on the Family held in The Pope unhesitatingly puts forward the Church s understanding that authentic marriage is between a man and a woman, who have committed themselves to one another in permanent fidelity, expressing their mutual love and openness to children, and abiding as a sacrament of Christ s love for his Church (52, 71). He bemoans any number of threats to this ideal, including moral relativism, a pervasive cultural narcissism, the ideology of self-invention, pornography, the throwaway society, etc. He explicitly calls to our attention the teaching of Pope Paul VI in Humanae Vitae regarding the essential connection between the unitive and the procreative dimensions of married love (80). Moreover, he approvingly cites the consensus of the recent Synod on the Family that homosexual relationships cannot be considered even vaguely analogous to what the Church means by marriage (251). He is especially strong in his condemnation of ideologies that dictate that gender is merely a social construct and can be changed or manipulated according to our choice (56). Such moves are tantamount, he argues, to forgetting the right relationship between creature and Creator. Finally, any doubt regarding the Pope s attitude toward the permanence of marriage is dispelled as clearly and directly as possible: The indissolubility of marriage what God has joined together, let no man put asunder (Mt 19:6) should not be viewed as a yoke imposed on humanity, but as a gift granted to those who are joined in marriage... (62). However, the Pope also honestly admits that many people fall short of the ideal, failing fully to integrate all of the dimensions of what the Church means by matrimony. What is the proper attitude to them? The Pope has a visceral reaction against a strategy of simple condemnation. Accordingly, he recommends two fundamental moves: First, we can recognize, even in irregular or objectively imperfect unions (cohabitation/divorce and remarriage), certain positive elements that participate, as it were, in the fullness of married love. This is not to say that irregular or non-sacramental unions are permitted or in accord with the will of God; it is to say that the Church can perhaps find a more winsome way to move people in such a situation to conversion. Second, we must not forget the Church s classical distinction between the objective morality of an action and the individual's personal responsibility in committing that act (302). The Pope observes that many people in irregular unions find themselves in a nearly impossible bind. This is, of course, not to insinuate that their situations are not objectively wrong, but it is to say that the pressures, difficulties, and dilemmas might mitigate their culpability. Can the Church, therefore, not help such people, in the privacy of the confessional, to discern their degree of moral responsibility? Once again, this is not to embrace a breezy anything-goes mentality, it is to find, perhaps, for someone in great pain, a way forward. Will Amoris Laetitia end all debate on these matters? Hardly. But it does indeed represent a deft and impressive balancing of the many and often contradictory interventions at the two Synods on the Family. As such, it will be of great service to many suffering souls who come to the Field Hospital. ---Bishop Robert Barron, Los Angeles
