3 May 6, 2007 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page Three FR. BOB S UTTERINGS 5 th Sunday of Easter Our readings this week focus on the ultimate makeover. I came across this reflection the other day and thought you might enjoy it. A while ago the Lysol brand of cleaning products was promoting a new toilet brush, one that has the liquid cleanser and disinfectant stored inside the handle. Television became its midwife, promoting it as the new generation of toilet bowl cleaners. The ad concluded with a series of housewife testimonials, the final one of which attested, It has changed my life! It was but another appeal to our hidden longing that our lives be made new. Or consider the abundance of television makeover programs, even a surgical makeover the extreme makeover. Each of us in some way longs to be made new, sometimes vicariously and sometimes personally. One of the paradoxes of life is that the more we seek ourselves, the more we lose ourselves; and the more we are willing to lose ourselves, the more we find ourselves. It is, of course, only another way of speaking about love. It seems to be a simple rule of thumb. If your life is in chaos or disarray, if you find yourself unsettled and discombobulated, then forget about your own life and begin to focus on the lives of others. It is how love works, if indeed love does any work at all. It is love that makes us new. It is the ultimate makeover, simply because God is love. Weapons will never create a new Iraq; only compassion will, and justice, and heartfelt care for the Iraqi people. Punishment and the inhumane conditions of prison life will never remake the soul of one who is incarcerated, only hope for a future and a nurturing of the human spirit. More liturgical regulations and prescriptions will never bring deepening faith life to our Eucharistic assemblies; only love for one another will, and the healing we so desperately need. Msgr. Ralph Kuehner and Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis, Living The Word, Vol. 22 (Franklin Park, IL.: World Library Publications, 2006) CONGRATULATIONS I would like to express on behalf of the entire parish and myself the warmest of congratulations to our 2007 Confirmation Class. 94 of our parish youth will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit this Sunday during Confirmation. We are so proud of each one of you and your continued commitment to the practice of your faith as fully initiated members of this faith community. We are reassured by the abundance of grace that you will receive this day from the Holy Spirit that you will be ever faithful disciples of the Lord. You have been called to go forth and spread the Good News of the Gospel to everyone who you will encounter. The entire parish knows that you make this commitment after much preparation, discernment, and prayer. May the Holy Spirit guide you always to live in the ways of the Lord. The people of St. Cletus Parish send you forth with our prayers and blessings. PRAYERS FOR PEACE The month of May is Mary s Month. Let us pray that Mary may intercede on our behalf to the Lord that we may truly obtain peace in the world. Please pray your rosary this month not only for peace but for a lasting peace. Pray that our world may know true justice for all. Easter Blessings to All, Fr. Bob

4 Page Four Fifth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2007 Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, MAY 6, 2007 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Let s do something new When Jesus says he gives us a new commandment, we might wonder what makes it new. Might it be that instead of focusing on what we shouldn t do (all those shalt nots ), Jesus tells us what we should do love one another and not in some abstract, warm, fuzzy way, but in very visible and tangible ways that will be extraordinary enough to make others take note. Over the course of Christian history, perhaps there has been too much emphasis on the shalt nots rather than on this one essential shalt (which, if lived fully, will also keep us from all those shalt nots ). So, the next time you find yourself or your faith community focused only on the shalt nots of life, take a step back and ask, Does this help others to see how we love one another? TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 14:21-27; Revelation 21:1-5a; John 13:31-33a, By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. MONDAY, MAY 7 EASTER WEEKDAY We have nothing to fear but fear itself Jesus foresees that one of his disciples will betray him. Judas with his kiss? Peter with his denials as the cock crows? Or each of us with our daily failures to live fully in Christ? Betrayals stem from fear fear that somehow we ll lose out on freedoms and fortunes we feel we deserve. So we put ourselves first and try to rationalize why what we did is for the best. Next time you re feeling pressure to protect your position, control an outcome, or stake a claim on some material benefit, ask yourself: If I were acting out of faith, hope, or charity, would my response be different? Knowing we have alternatives helps us make better choices. That is the message of the Incarnation. TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 14:5-18; John 14:21-26 Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me. TUESDAY, MAY 8 EASTER WEEKDAY Not to worry Peace be with you and protect us from all anxiety. We hear these words in liturgy and may think they are about our feelings. Surely God wants us to be free from conflict and worry. But as we know, our world is full of persistent conflict, and our lives do not lack for anxiety about many things. We can find a clue to the deeper meaning of these phrases in our praying of the Lord s Prayer as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The peace and joy Christ extends to us is not the absence of all earthly fear. Rather it is the assurance we have that Jesus is with God and will come again. That is what puts our hearts and minds to rest. TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 14:19-28; John 14:27-31a My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. WEDNESDAY, MAY 9 EASTER WEEKDAY Got patience? So, you need to be more patient, right with your kids, your spouse, the people at work? So you try to be more patient. Why is it that, try as we may to be patient, we always seem to end up losing it? Maybe it s because patience is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5:22), and a branch cannot bear fruit apart from the vine. Our efforts at being patient need to be spent abiding in Christ, not trying so hard to be patient. Working on that relationship with Jesus, through prayer, worship, and the Bible will go a long way toward producing much fruit. TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 15:1-6; John 15:1-8 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit. THURSDAY, MAY 10 FEAST OF BLESSED DAMIEN JOSEPH DE VUESTER OF MOLOKA I, PRIEST Joy in unexpected places For Christ, being wholly infinite also meant entering into the finite constraints of the flesh, and rising into heaven entailed descending to death. The life of Blessed Damien testified to this paradoxical Christian truth. To experience the freedom and life offered in Christ, Damien came to the Colony of Death, a community of lepers shut off from the world. The mission was a death sentence being the Father of the lepers indeed meant that Damien himself became a leper. Nevertheless, he entered into their physical constraints so that he might free them into the life of Christ. How do we try to attain freedom in our own lives? TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 15:7-21; John 15:9-11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. FRIDAY, MAY 11 EASTER WEEKDAY No greater love Jesus left few literal commands, which makes Love one another stand out starkly, not merely as a plea that we just get along but as an expectation of wondrous love (as the old hymn says) from one who knew exactly what it cost to lay down one s life for another. Sometimes this greater love is dramatic, such as that of the man who dropped down to the subway tracks where a stranger had fallen and covered that person s body until the train, miraculously, passed over them. But it is just as profound whenever we put someone else s good ahead of our own, like parents who daily sacrifice for their kids or the children who later do the same for aging parents. Jesus knows what great love we re capable of and expects nothing less. TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 15:22-31; John 15:12-17 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. SATURDAY, MAY 12 FEAST OF PANCRAS, MARTYR Martyrdom: not just for grownups When we think religious education, we traditionally consider the training suitable for children. And when we think testifying for the faith, we normally reflect on something adults might do. Pancras, the boy martyr of the fourth century, invites us to think differently. He had only converted to Christianity a month before he was asked to make the toughest choice of all, to deny his new faith or give up his life. Not yet 14, he was mature enough to choose Christ. We might all pray for the courage and fidelity Pancras held in his young heart. TODAY S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 16:1-10; John 15:18-21 If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C.
