Scott Daniels with Dr. T. Scott Daniels Entertaining Angels Genesis 18:1-15 Share with God s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:13) Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2) Two Different Destinies It may seem like a strange pairing, but the story of the messengers blessed visitation to Abraham and Sarah in 18:1-15 is placed together with the story of the messengers destructive visitation to Sodom and Gomorrah in 18:16-19:29. The contrast is sharp. Abraham is going to receive word from God that the promise of an heir through Sarah is going to come to fulfillment. Lot, on the other hand, will receive word that his hopes and dreams of becoming a citizen of Sodom are about to be destroyed. Abraham will gain everything he has been hoping for. Lot will lose everything he has been working for. Two Different Settings When Genesis 18 opens, the Lord and his messengers are coming to Abraham and they find him sitting at the entrance to his tent near the oaks of Mamre. When Genesis 19 opens, the messengers of the Lord find Lot sitting at the gateway of Sodom. The contrast is intentional. While Abraham has pitched his tents in the land of promise and is still waiting there upon the Lord, Lot has pitched his tents at the gates of the city and is in a sense working out his own destiny. Two Different Forms of Hospitality When Abraham sees the three men standing nearby and waiting to see what their reception might be as would be customary he excitedly ran to meet them. He welcomed them warmly. He gave them water to wash their feet and invited them to rest in the shade of the trees. Abraham hurriedly prepared a fest for his guests. He instructed Sarah to bake bread from fine flour. This kind of bread would only be used on special occasions. He then selected a choice, tender calf for the meal. This generous gesture demonstrated the high regard Abraham had for these visitors. As the guests ate, Abraham stood beside a tree, ready to attend to their needs. The fact that he did not eat with the guests further demonstrated Abraham s deference to the strangers whom he had invited in. In chapter 19, Lot also bowed down before the messengers and invited them into his home. But the reception they received from the citizens of the city forms the ultimate contrast with Abraham. Rather than being welcomed into their presence and offered protection and care, the men of Sodom turn the visitation of the strangers into an opportunity for misuse and abuse of the vulnerable wanderers.
3 The Call to Hospitality It may seem unusual to modern readers - who generally live in a culture that is shaped by fear of the stranger - to read texts in which a lack of hospitality is not just seen as bad manners but as sinful. But in the Scripture hospitality is seen as one of the distinctive marks of God s people. God is always one who welcomes the outsider. God is seen as the one who makes space within himself for the other and so when his people act hospitably toward the alien and stranger they are acting like God. Many of the Old Testament economic laws have to do with the treatment of aliens and strangers. In particular the gleaning laws build in the possibility of care for those who wander into and out of our midst. Jesus parable of the persistent neighbor (Luke 11:5-8) is built upon the idea that for one of God s people not to welcome a guest with the best the community had to offer would be unthinkable. So although we often think of the sin of Sodom as sexual in nature, the beginning of the sin of Sodom is rooted in a lack of hospitality and care for the stranger. Ezekiel 16:49 says, This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but they did not help the poor and needy. In contrast, the faith of Abraham is demonstrated in his welcoming of the three strangers into his midst and his generous care for them. Hospitality as an act of faith is an openness to the future that God may bring to us through unexpected people. If angels came in packages, we'd almost always pick the wrong one. Even as the devil is evil disguised as good, angels are goodness disguised. They show up in foolscap, calico, and gingham, and brown paper bags. Jesus discovered the realm of God in a mustard seed, the smallest and least portentous of all seeds. Mustard seeds and angels have this in common. They are little epiphanies of the divine amidst the ordinary. F. Forrester Church The Laughter of the Future Abraham did not know when he opened his life to the three strangers that he was inviting in the presence of Yahweh. But God speaks a blessing through the messengers into the life of Abraham. Not only will the promise be fulfilled but for the first time the specific time of the promised child is revealed. Sarah who is listening in the tent laughs to herself. What Yahweh has spoken is not only far-fetched it is now impossible. Sarah is well past human ability to conceive. The messengers ask a question that is not answered, but is spoken rhetorically as a challenge for Abraham and Sarah and for the reader. Is anything too wonderful for the LORD? The messenger asks Sarah why she has laughed. And she denies her laughter. The passage ends with a simple statement: Oh yes, you did laugh. This statement is probably not so much a condemnation as an expectation. Sarah laughed and will laugh because the open future of possibility for those who walk with God is immeasurably more than all we could ever ask or imagine.
