Scott Daniels with Dr. T. Scott Daniels The Way of Mercy Matthew 9:9-13 Holiness and the Prophets (Hosea 6:4-6) Hosea s message is directed to Israel (Ephraim) during a time of war and strife. In 5:13 medical imagery is used to describe how the northern nation sought help and healing from Assyria rather than from the LORD. The people of Israel believed that they could fulfill their obligations toward God through various religious practices and sacrifices while what the Lord really wanted from them is their character to be a reflection of his merciful nature. All four of the prophets from the eighth century address this issue: I hate, I despise your festivals Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream (Amos 5:21-24). What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats Cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow (Isaiah 1:10-17). With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil?...he has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:6-8). Holiness and Tax Collectors (Matt. 9:9-13) Not only did Jesus call a person engaged in a questionable lifestyle to follow him, he kept eating with tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees spoke for the first time in the gospel of Matthew and asked Jesus why he kept eating with unclean sinners. This is not an irrelevant question. It is a question of holiness. Jesus was as concerned as the Pharisees with the question of how the people of God were to maintain a holy life in a world in which the principalities and powers are in control. The Pharisees rightly thought that they should try to live life avoiding anything that would make them impure, and thus, incapable of worshiping God. The critical issue was not the desire to be holy but the ground of holiness. The Pharisees ground their holiness in ritual purity while Jesus grounds holiness in the prophetic call toward mercy. Hosea 6:6 is now enthroned by Jesus as the social point of the Hebrew Scripture. It is the OT s way of saying the NT s Golden Rule. It is a canon within the canon, a hermeneutical rule, an interpretive principle for the correct reading of Scripture about right relations with people (F. Dale Bruner).

3 Holiness and the Sabbath (Matt. 12:1-14) The Sabbath was Israel s way of being oriented toward God in time. The Pharisees come off in the text as legalistic, yet their concern about Sabbath keeping was also critical for holiness. The Pharisees recognized (rightly) that without the practice of Sabbath keeping they would not be the unique people of God in the world. Using the Scriptures Jesus argued that David and the priests did not act unjustly when they placed human need above legal purity. With a bold turn Jesus claimed to be greater than the temple, David, and the Sabbath. But it isn t just the person of Jesus that is Lord over the Sabbath it is what Jesus is embodying (mercy) that trumps the kind of holiness embodied by the Pharisees. Jesus did not abolish the law but in his ministry he sided with the prophetic interpretation of the Torah. For the prophets the aim of the Torah was not to form a separate people from the world simply for the sake of uniqueness or even as a means to receive blessing from God. The aim of the law was to form a resident alien people in the world distinctly marked by God s merciful character. Holiness and the Sacrifice of the Cross (Titus 3:3-7) In both places in Matthew where Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6 the juxtaposition is between sacrifice and mercy. What the Lord requires is not sacrifice but mercy. In the cross the sacrifice and mercy come together. The sacrificial death of Jesus is also the ultimate act of mercy. The heart of holiness is the sacrificial life of mercy. I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:1-2).
