LUTHERAN CHURCH and RISEN SAVIOR LUTHERAN SCHOOL Twenty-first Sunday Pentecost of October 21, 2012 Through the Means of Grace, our Mission is to serve God by providing for the spiritual needs of St. Mark s members and others. We will accomplish this by proclaiming God s Word in its truth and purity, sharing the Gospel in our community and beyond, teaching the young about Jesus and equipping our members for stewardship. We celebrate Holy Communion on the second and fourth Thursdays and Sundays. We practice close communion and invite guests to speak with the pastor before coming to the Lord s Table. 3 3 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God s house. 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God s house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God s house. Alleluia. Gospel Lesson: Mark 10: The Rich Young Man 17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother. 20 Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy. 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. 22 At this the man s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, Children, how hard it is to enter the

4 kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, Who then can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. 11 WORSHIP SUPPLEMENT We, the Board of Elders of St. Mark s, would like to purchase the Christian Worship: Supplement for our church. We would like to have four Supplements for each pew for a total of 144 copies. At a cost of $14.25 per copy the total cost would be $2,052. We have not budgeted for this expenditure. We wish to turn to you for support. You have no doubt noticed for the past year that the Risen Savior students, the Fide Worship Band and for several communion services hymns from the Worship Supplement have been used. The Worship Supplement contains 84 new hymns, new liturgies and services, new Psalm settings, and very much more. The Worship Supplement is inspirational and an excellent addition to our church worship music. There are 75 units (families or households) in our congregation. If each unit would purchase one Supplement for their unit and one Supplement for general use, we would have the required number of Supplements. A separate check for $28.50, made out to St. Mark s, with the designation Worship Supplement will take us to this goal. Simply place the check in the collection plate. Prayerfully consider this donation to support and enhance our worship services. Thank you. The Board of Elders About the CHRISTIAN WORSHIP: SUPPLEMENT The Lutheran Hymnal (TLH) served congregations of the WELS from Then Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal (CW) took its place as the primary hymnal in the church body. It was the vision of those committee members and the WELS Commission on Worship that a hymnal should serve 25 to 30 years. Over the course of that many years, worship resources change and worship practice in the church body might change as well. (God s Word will not change!) 11

12 Details will be forthcoming regarding the introduction of this worship resource to St. Mark s. QUARTERLY VOTERS ASSEMBLY All voting members or those interested in becoming voting members are asked to join us on Sunday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the church basement for our Quarterly Voters Assembly. A number of important topics will be discussed at this meeting, the most important one involving the final stage of the RSLS expansion plans. Please make it a point to attend this very important meeting! SAT 10/27 9:00 a.m. MLC Ladies Auxiliary MLC FOOD SHELF The Joint Reformation Service for the New Ulm, Redwood, and Mankato area will be held on October 28 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Christ at Martin Luther College. 3 Posters are attached. The Handbell Choir will be playing on the 4th of November. We will also celebrate Reformation on that Sunday. It is also the day after the time change. Dear Musical Members of our congregation, We have begun work on our S.S. Christmas Eve service and want to cut some of the songs that the children will sing. We are looking for a few volunteers to sing a couple hymns as part of our Christmas Eve Service. It could be a duet, or trio, or more. We would welcome arrangements for "From Heav'n Above" and another hymn that is undecided at this time. Also, if you would like to play a musical instrument for the Christmas Eve service, we would encourage you to volunteer. Don't be shy; let us know if you are willing to help us.
