2 Old Testament: Job 38:1-11 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, 9 when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10 and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, 11 and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed? Epistle: Romans 10:5-17 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, Who will 2 ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 14 But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us? 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Holy Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by

3 this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, It is a ghost! and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid. 28 And Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. 29 He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, Lord, save me. 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. Job s new (chapters 40:3-5, and 42:1-17) Please Remember in Prayer Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs. O great Physician of soul and body, we commend to Your care Charles Bailey, Gene Bartelt, Ruby Campisi, Lillian Cates, Karen Cook, Ron Jensen II, Georgia Knope, Jenna Martin, Wilbert Mayer, Fred Miessler, Irv Muenster, Dorothy O Brien, Pat Picavet, Naomi Schewe, Evelyn Serdar, and Bob Warren with the prayer that, if it is Your will, healing and strength may return to their bodies. Guard and keep them in Your protection and care. O Lord of life and death, You have seen fit to take home to heaven the soul of Jill Kunzelman, the mother of Kim DeMoulin. (Funeral service will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home.) Comfort this family with the promise of Your presence and the hope of life everlasting. O Lord, You have promised that even to old age You walk with us. Be with all who are shut-in, Irene Daer, Lorraine Fuhrer and Patricia James, and grant them every blessing that You intend for them this week. O Lord, we are Your people, the sheep of Your pasture. We commend one another to Your merciful hand. Especially we seek Your blessing for Dolly Lawver, John, Shari, Samantha & Steven Lee, and Ellen Lehehbauer. 3

4 O God of nations, our nation continues to fall down the slippery slope of moral and ethical indifference. The solutions many of our leaders design make little sense. The failure to seek Your guidance and wisdom is apparent. Lead our leaders back to You and Your precious Word. Raise up men and women of faith to speak boldly on behalf of all that is right and godly. Protect this land from all forms of terror and evil. Watch over all who serve in places of danger. And, grant that we may always serve Your faithful people. Into Your hands we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. Fill The Bus School Supply Drive: Customers and community members are invited to come to Fashion Bug on West Lane Rd. during the month of August to donate school supplies. Everyone who makes a donation will receive a Fashion Bug coupon to use on their next purchase. On Wednesday August 31 st all of the supplies collected throughout the month will be packaged and delivered to the schools. 7. LFL Quote: We must continue to do all we can to bring an end to the darkness of abortion. We need to reach out in compassion to those experiencing a crisis pregnancy so they do not enter that darkness. Holy Communion It is the custom of Concordia to offer Holy Communion in most of our worship services. If you are a Baptized and Confirmed member of a Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregation you are welcome to partake. If you are not an LCMS member, we ask that you refrain from partaking until you have visited with our pastor. We believe what the Bible says about Communion to be correct and true, namely that we receive with the bread and wine the very body and blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins, the strengthening of our faith, and the assurance of life eternal. We also believe that this sacrament should only be received by those who share in this Biblical belief. Distribution of Communion Distribution of the wine is by common or individual cup. The center cups of the individual tray contain grape juice for those who for medical reasons cannot have the wine. Those desiring a blessing from the pastor, but not communing, are asked please place 2 fingers over their lips to alert the servers of their desire.
