2 A PRAYER FOR OUR FUTURE As our capital campaign continues, we invite you to join together in praying the following prayer that was composed by members of the parish and the rector. O God, Giver of all good gifts. We thank You for the grace of serving You by serving our neighbors. May our hearts be kind and generous. May our ministry be rooted in love and bold in imagination. In transforming the First Church, renew our lives and all who join us so the community may be changed by Your love and the power of the Spirit. Amen. HEADSTONE CLEANING AND RESTORATION Headstones stand out Surrounded by green grass Marble and granite rocks Reflections from my past.. Anthony Tucker Would you like to join us in cleaning some of the beautiful and centuries old headstones in our Cemetery? The Headstone Cleaning Program will take place again this year on three Sundays: July 9 and 23, and September 10, from 9:30 to 12. Wear comfortable clothes and bring sun protection, a stool or kneeling pad and a beverage and/ or snack. We will have the cleaning solution and cleaning tools. The cemetery is next to the Church of the Messiah. Hope to see you there. For more information please call Dee Aukamp, Cemetery Committee HERB AND MEMORIAL GARDEN NEWS What is happening with the Iona/herb garden and the Memorial garden? After at least 40 years, the hedges and plants in the herb garden were tired and some were in deep shade due to the growth of the lovely holly and dogwood trees. So we on the Cemetery committee and Buildings and Grounds have begun a plan of rejuvenation. The first part has begun with the removal of the old shrubs and trees that were too close to the stone church. New shrubs will be planted; the soil in the herb garden improved; and the outside of the bathroom addition renewed. The patio between the two gardens will be connected by a two-step terrace and a handicap accessible entry will be made into the memorial garden. Once all this hardscape is completed, a group of us will replant the herb garden following much of the original design. Terry Soares and Patti Keating have been extremely generous with their expertise and guidance. We hope to make these sacred spaces beautiful and more accessible. Thank you to all the generous people who sponsored me on Sunday, July 16 th, the last day of the walk from Provincetown to Falmouth. $1,205 was raised for the Housing Assistance Corporation! The walkers greatly appreciated the rest-stop refreshments and the chance to relax and socialize for a few minutes. They wish to thank everyone for the hospitality. - Carol Francis-Conover GRAND SUNDAY, August 6 th, 10AM service Please join us at the 10:00AM service on Sunday, August 6th, for a Grand Celebration! Summer on the Cape is filled with family get-togethers. Next Sunday, bring a visiting grandchild or a grandparent to church and be a part of a service to celebrate the love that flows between grandparents and grandchildren, and their special relationship with each other. Following the service there will be a picnic at Fisher House for the parish and the community, ending at 2:30PM, to allow for lots of time at the beach. There will be food and fun on the grounds as part of this special Sunday celebration. It should be a "grand" day! CHURCH COMMUNITY GARDEN: A request for volunteers. The church community garden behind Fisher House is up and running after a rainy start to the season! The beds have been weeded and a number of squash, cucumber and pepper plants have been planted. We are looking for volunteers to help out by stopping in periodically to help keep the weeds down. We also need someone or a few people who would be willing to weed-wack around the garden beds once a week or so. Once the plants start producing, we d also love some help staying on top of the harvest! Please speak to Brittany Lord if you would be interested in helping out! NEW VOLUNTEERS WELCOME AT THE VILLAGE AT CATAUMET: Next Monthly Dinner, Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 5PM We re serving dinner to our neighbors at the Village at Cataumet, the shelter for families, on the first Wednesday of every month. This is a continuing ministry and we always welcome new cooks and new servers. Look for a sign-up sheet in the back of the church on Sunday morning and join us. We are trying to show our neighbors that we care about their difficult situation. Help once a year or once a month every contribution is welcome! 4 CANTO ARMONICO CONCERT - Saturday, August 26 th at 5:00PM Please join us on Saturday, August 26th at 5:00pm, as we welcome Canto Armonico, a chamber choir from Boston, here at the Church of the Messiah. They will be presenting the program: "Vanished Glories from Across the Channel: Music of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. A free-will offering is requested. For more information about Canto Armonico, please visit their website: WOODS HOLE MEDITATION GROUP: Mondays, 3-4 PM, Fisher House A weekly meditation group has been formed and is open to any and all in the community. We are meeting on Mondays in Fisher House from 3 4 PM. The format includes 15 minutes of introductions, 35 minutes of sitting with brief instructions and 10 minutes afterwards for people to gather informally. We are also offering a half hour discussion on meditation practice after our sitting for anyone who wishes to attend. Our leaders include several people who are experienced meditators and have done some teaching. I welcome this opportunity to continue to open our doors to people in the parish and community who wish to spend some quiet time in community at the beginning of the week. Deborah FIRST CHURCH BUILDING UPDATE Our Request for Proposals (RFP) have been sent to four contractors: Cape Associates, Delphi, Dellebrook and The Valle Group. Jim Vieira will be checking references, finding out what their workloads are and the start and end time for other projects each contractor is working on. The deadline for submitting their proposals to us will be early August. We will have all contractors make a joint presentation to a selection committee within a week of receiving all four proposals, but no later than mid-august. Once the contractor is selected, we hope to have building permits within days. Jim has been visiting Town Hall to touch base with all the different departments to make them aware of the project and to begin the permitting process. Depending upon when we are issued the building permit, we hope that construction can start as early as October. Jim expects our project to take about a year to complete. With regards to the kitchen, Lou Ann Burgess of ikitchens Etc. met with the FCBC in June and has drawn up some design ideas. These will be available to see during the refreshments after the 10 AM service, as well as being on hand in the Gateway Room in Fisher House. During the summer months, we are having an open house during the Sunday lemonade hour for everyone to see our exciting plans for this extraordinary building renovation project. As you can see, we are very busy! Thanks everyone for your continuing support for this amazing project.
