1 April 2017 Worship in April Sunday Morning Worship at 9:30 am Sunday, April 2 Fi#h Sunday in Lent Lazarus Wednesday, April 5 Mid-Week Worship Sunday, April 9 Palm Sunday Royalty Thursday, April 13 Maundy Thursday Friday, April 14 Good Friday Fauré Requiem Saturday, April 15 Easter Vigil Sunday, April 16 ResurrecDon of Our Lord Easter Brunch Sunday, April 23 Second Sunday of Easter Thomas Sunday, April 30 Third Sunday of Easter Emmaus! Other Coming Events Saturday, April 1 Labyrinth Work Day Thursday, April 6 Book Group Saturday, May 6 World Labyrinth Day Observing All of Holy Week Soon a&er I was ordained Palm Sunday became Passion Sunday in our liturgical tradi7on. As culture more and more skipped Holy Week and bounced from Palm Sunday right into Easter, the people who formed our lec7onary became increasingly concerned. The cri7cal events leading up to the cross and Jesus' crucifixion were not being heard by the majority of worshippers. Hence, the reading of the Passion became the norm for the Sunday before Easter. I get it. Reading the Passion at the beginning of Holy Week is powerful, but I always feel Palm Sunday gets pushed aside a lijle too quickly. Palm Sunday is a paradox. On the one hand, there is a sense of victory. It's easy to get caught up with the hosannas. We want Jesus to be royalty. But as the week unfolds, the excitement of Jesus' entry into the Holy City is soon swallowed up by the horror surrounding the cross. This year we are going to reclaim Palm Sunday as a day unto itself. Liturgically, we need to feel the misguided excitement of the day to bejer sense the betrayal when the story starts to unravel in the upper room. This means, of course, that we need to worship throughout Holy Week. As our lec7onary fears, to read the resurrec7on with no reading of the cross, misses the point of the story en7rely. The Passion needs to be read, but this year we will do it on Good Friday. You need to be here! You wouldn't miss Easter. You wouldn't miss Christmas. Good Friday holds as much importance. I encourage your par7cipa7on in all the Holy Week services, but this year especially I call ajen7on to the Good Friday service. The choir will be presen7ng the Fauré Requiem, presented within the reading of the Passion of John. This service will capture the depth of God's profound love, revealed within the betrayal of the cross. If I could, I'd require all of us to ajend. Pastor Froehlke See page 9 for Complete Holy Week Schedule and Easter Flower Order Form

2 A Fauré to Remember The Adult Choir has been working on the Requiem of French composer Gabriel Fauré since the lajer part of February. We re preparing the work to offer during worship on Good Friday, April 14. Offering a work of this size, all told about 40 minutes in length, is quite a large undertaking. But it s one that is worth the 7me and challenge. The last 7me the music ministry offered a major work was in December of 2011, when we sang the Christmas por7on (and Hallelujah) of Handel s Messiah. I ve wanted to do another one sooner than now, but the 7ming was really right to do one this year. And, Fauré s work is sublime, theologically informed, and appropriate for the occasion. We ll be offering the work with a 10-piece chamber orchestra, including harp. For a church music ministry, offering major works can be expensive both in 7me and finances. But it has many posi7ve results. Major works help congrega7ons expand their reach as ministries. Doing major works like this not only ajracts new congregants but new musicians. For this concert, Tidings, the newslejer of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, is published monthly. Ar7cles, story ideas, and comments can be ed to loismcase@gmail.com. Deadline for the May issue is Sunday, April 23 Staff and Officers of Prince of Peace Rev. Peter Froehlke, Pastor Dr. Doug Helvering, Minister of Music Kathy Nowak, Parish Administrator Tom Marvil, Church Musician Daniel Tate, Field Educa7on Student Tim Urbanek, Treasurer Dorothy Safranek, Financial Secretary Congregational Council Mar7n Rexroad (President) Newman Wilson (Vice President) Rich Carlson David Case Nancy Herrington David Jeedi Diane Urbanek Elizabeth Wagner David New, Secretary (non-vo7ng) we ll be involving some extra musicians from Westminster to expand the choir s roster. Major works also improve and challenge the choir s musicianship: they help them learn new tricks and understand the humanity and spirituality of a consummate ar7st and composer. This will help as the choir learns new and challenging repertoire in the years to come. Gabriel Fauré was one of the leading composers, organists, and teachers of his genera7on in France. He was ac7ve in the lajer part of the 1800s and con7nued important work in the 20 th century, which included being the highly successful head of the Paris Conservatory, where he was teacher to composers including Maurice Ravel, Nadia Boulanger, and Charles Koechlin. His Requiem has seven movements and includes vocal solo work for a baritone and soprano. He wrote of his work, Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest. While Fauré s work isn t specifically about the Passion story, it is a wonderful companion to the story of Jesus crucifixion and resurrec7on because, in the end, the Chris7an story is also one of love, wonder, and faith in eternal rest. I hope you ll ajend on Good Friday for this special worship service. And, invite your friends. Peace, Doug PoP Philharmonic The PoP Philharmonic will make our spring appearance on April 23, the Sunday a&er Easter. If you would like to join us in playing your instrument, please let Doug know before Easter.
