4 The Breath of Salvation Through Christ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:16-17) 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. (1 John 3:16) 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man and woman of God may be complete [put together], equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:14-17) We live in an unfair, unjust, ugly, broken world, where bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. Where do you find your hope confidence joy endurance perspective life and that the best is yet to come? ALL THE BIBLE POINTS TO JESUS! You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (John 5:39-40 ESV) You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you ll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me! And here I am, standing right before you, and you aren t willing to receive from me the life you say you want. (John 15:39-40 Message) PENTECOST: THE BREATH OF THE SPIRIT Training Salvation = The Spirit breathes reviving in Righteousness Teaching = The Spirit breathes reveling Right standing and right living keep you fresh! Reproof = The Spirit breathes revealing Correction = The Spirit breathes reminding
5 Sermon-Based Bible Study Share 1. What are the contemporary cultural views of the Christian Church today? 2. Reflecting on PG s sermon, which points stand out for you? 3. What was you understanding of PG s use of fresh? 4. Has your faith ever been stale and not fresh? What happened? 5. What would happen if CLC were fresh? 6. Why do we need the Holy Spirit? (See Acts 1:8) Study 1. The night before His crucifixion, Jesus Christ explained to His followers some of the great benefits they (we) would receive through God s Spirit. What are they according to John 14:15-27? 2. As you link Acts 1:15 with the last verse of Luke s Gospel (24:53), where did Pentecost take place? 3. Who was present in Jerusalem to hear the Apostles speaking in tongues that day (See Acts 2:5, 9-11)? 4. Look carefully at Acts 2:1-4, for there are three things which call for our attention: On what day did these events occur? What does Pentecost mean? It was 50 days after what feast? Read Exodus 34:22 and Deuteronomy 16:10. Pentecost came at the end of the wheat harvest in Palestine, and they were to take this new wheat, freshly harvested, the first fruits of the harvest, and bake of it two loaves. What or who do the loaves represent? (See John 10:16) The wave loaves is the only sacrifice in all the Old Testament that ever had leaven included in it. Why? 5. What does Paul emphasize about being baptized with the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:13? Why is this significant? 6. What symbols are associated with the events of Pentecost? How do they give us a picture of the function of Christ s body, the church, and how it is to be characterized? What does wind symbolize? (See John 3:8) What does fire symbolize? What does tongues symbolize? 7. Read 2:4-12. Whenever the true gift of tongues is manifest it will always be characterized by four marks. What are they according to (1) 2:6-8, (2) 2:11b. (see 1 Corinthians 14:2a.), (3) refer to 1 Corinthians 12:7, and (4) 2: What is your perspective on this phenomena as it pertains to the church in our day? Support 1. What are the important truths of Pentecost that are applicable in your life and in our church? 2. What are you going to do in order to re-freshen your relationship with Jesus? 3. In what ways is the Holy Spirit filling you, breathing through you, in order to speak with boldness, clarity, sincerity, and earnestness, telling forth the mighty works of God? 4. Pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to fill His Church, fill you, so that together we might be powerful and passionate proclaimers of the Gospel.
