Remember listening to Peter, who insisted he d never disown Jesus, call down curses and swear that he didn t know the man? Bold, brave Peter became bankrupt Peter, filled only with sinful self-reliance that ended up deceiving him better than the devil could have himself. Remember that time you read half-heartedly the article about Christian witnessing because you ve heard it a thousand times before? God gave you an opportunity to share your faith that week and you only mumbled something like, Mmhhmm, yeah, right. Remember making yourself the promise that you d never forsake Jesus again by fleeing into that same old temptation, that there would not be a next time, but there have been many times since? We who are so bold in ourselves have become bankrupt, too. On Pentecost Day we see Peter again, this time stepping forward to speak. He will be ridiculed, and perhaps marked for death, but Peter doesn t care. Peter is going to tell everyone about Jesus and nothing will stop him now. Not embarrassment. Not ridicule. Not death itself. Who is this man? How has the one who became so empty because he was full of himself become now so bold in Christ that, even though he isn t sure of himself anymore, he is certain of God s promises and power? Where did this burning passion come from, this fiery courage to proclaim Christ? The answer, of course, has less to do with Peter and more to do with God. Had not Jesus promised a few days earlier, John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses. (Acts 1:5, 8)? On Pentecost God the Holy Spirit was filling Peter and the other believers with fire. It s a purifying fire that burns away the garbage of sin in our souls. It s a fire fueled by the blood of our sacrificial Lamb, Jesus Christ. It s a gentle, glowing fire burning quietly in the heart-hearth of a 90-yearold dying woman who still prays dearly and daily for mission work, her church and synod. It s a roaring fire burning with passion in the life of a new Christian convert discovering the wonders of God for the first time and ready to explain them to anyone who will listen. It s a warming fire helping a married couple express their Christian love for each other when their relationship is growing cold. It s a crackling fire that sounds crisp and zesty even when troubles are too overwhelming, and a believer in the midst of a storm proclaims how peaceful it is to be loved by Christ. It s a fire that fills every believer, young and old, to boldly step forward and speak, to say what needs to be said, to burn with passion for the rescuing of lost souls everywhere and actually do something about it. It s a fire kindled by the Holy Spirit in the repentant hearts of believers emptied of self-ride and looking for power beyond ourselves, looking for peace the world cannot give, looking for forgiveness that cannot be earned. 3 Your Ladies Guild at Work BY JAN ENDERLE This group is open to all women of Calvary. Our monthly meetings will resume on the second Thursday in September at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Our meetings consist of a Bible study with Pastor Spaude and a business meeting. This is a good opportunity to be involved in your church activities. For information, call Jan Enderle at or her at janwoodmansee@gmail.com. Alpha Pregnancy In keeping with their mission statement Spread the Gospel while emphasizing the sanctity of life, Alpha Pregnancy is distributing Bible story books along with diapers, formula, clothing, blankets, etc. to mothers-to-be. This is an ongoing project supported by your Ladies Guild. We are asking for additional donations of these books. They are available at most of the dollar stores as well as other discount stores. We are keeping a box in the Narthex for donations. Thank you for your support. Greeting Cards Your Ladies Guild has stocked new boxes of all-occasion greeting cards. These cards are provided as a service to the congregation and are sold at cost. They are displayed on a rack during fellowship time on the patio before and after the Sunday service as well as in the fellowship hall at all times. Food Pantry Calvary has been blessed to be able to help members and reach out to non-members through our food bank. We have been asking for donations and members have responded with great enthusiasm. The shelves have been re-stocked and we do have extras to replenish. Generally the usage goes up during the holidays. Thank you for continuing to support the Calvary Food Bank. There is a container on the patio every Sunday for donations or they can be dropped off in the kitchen, fellowship hall or the coffee room. Friendship Gang Outing Shop, Dine, & Explore Historic Downtown Glendale. Our focus will be on antique stores and boutiques. No doubt your mind will be strolling down memory lane as you explore the unique treasures. As serious shopping always leads to hunger, we will dine in the famous German restaurant, Haus Murphy. Adult singles and couples are welcome to join our carpool, which will leave Calvary at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10. Be sure to sign-up so we can reserve your spot. Lunch Bunch We are staying in Calvary s neighborhood and having lunch at Pita Jungle (SE corner of Dobson/Ray). Locate the sign-up sheet in the back of church and leave your autograph so we can have an accurate count for reservation purposes. We are meeting at the restaurant at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17. If you ve never attended a Lunch Bunch, you ve missed some delightful times with your Christian friends. Gamenite The next Gamenite is Friday, June 23, at 7:00 p.m. You ll uncover fun surprises as you guess your friend s favorite things during each round of the simple game, WHOONU! Join us for the fun in Calvary s Fellowship Hall. No need to sign-up, just show-up! Calvary Courier page 3

5 April Lunch Bunch Recap BY SUE SCHROEDER Snuggled into a cozy corner on April 29, nine Calvary friends enjoyed fellowship and a delicious meal. Flancer s is an American restaurant in uptown Gilbert. The majority of the group ate huge sandwiches served on homemade buns. We are a very friendly group and invite you to join us in upcoming Lunch Bunch events. The only requirement is that you find the signup sheet and reserve your spot. Looking forward to seeing you. May Nite on the Town Recap BY DEBBIE SPAUDE May s nite on the town took us to the Old Town Tortilla Factory in Old Town Scottsdale. The weather was perfect for our al fresco seating. Some of us chose the mahi mahi tacos, which were absolutely delicious. While others chose the taco platter, which included tender, flavorable steak, juicy, slightly-spicy chicken, and mouthwatering shrimp. All enjoyed beautiful weather, wonderful delicious food, and lots of laughter. May Friendship Gang Road Trip Recap BY SUE SCHROEDER Hilda, Tammy, Jim, and Sue spent a wonderful day together on their roadtrip to Tucson on Saturday, May 6. Their destination was the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. It was amazing! In fact, more interesting than anyone expected. The museum was divided into three galleries: the history gallery, exploring the world, and the enchanted realm. There were over 300 houses and roomboxes on display. After two hours discovering the world of miniatures, we headed to Cafe Francais for a lovely lunch. On the way out of town, we detoured to a feed store. Sue wanted to purchase pellets so her grandchildren could feed the ducks at the Dobson library. It was such a funfilled day. We were sorry you were unable to join us. Maybe next time!
