2 Before coming to Sun City, Sheryl and I were serving First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, Iowa, the county seat of about 2,700 people. The church was formed in the late1800 s as Grundy Center was being newly settled by German and Scottish immigrants to America. It wasn t until 1952 that the first hospital was built. There is a Presbyterian connection to that hospital and an inspiration for our church as we here at Faith Presbyterian consider the focus for this coming year: HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION! In the hallway of the newly built wing of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital is a display case of historical artifacts that were used during the time when the hospital was first built in 1952.There are pictures of doctors and nurses in the medical garb of the day and also some of the early instruments used in medicine at that hospital. There is also a plaque dedicated to a Dr. Henry Mohl with his picture on it. Dr. Mohl had a medical practice in Grundy Center from Imagine the tireless hours Dr. Mohl must have worked and especially during the time that the nearest hospital was over 25 miles away. Dr. Mohl and his family were active in the community and active members of First Presbyterian Church of Grundy Center. Dr. Mohl served on the Session at the time the hospital was being built. According to the information on the plaque, Dr. Mohl had a compassionate heart for the people of Grundy County. It was through his foresight and dedication that he was able to get the first hospital built in that town. After many years of hard work and planning, the hospital was finally built and a dedication date was set. Two weeks before the planned dedication of the new hospital, Dr. Mohl suddenly passed away. His funeral was held at First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. When I first saw the plaque in that display case I felt sad for the doctor and his family. After all, he worked so hard and long for many years to get it built and wasn t able to have the pleasure of being there for the dedication and celebrate his achievement. But then I read a little further down the plaque which reads: ALTHOUGH DR.HENRY MOHL DID NOT GET TO ATTEND THE DEDICATION HIS VISION SURVIVED HIS LIFE. What a legacy! What would it be like to work and give of yourself and have your vision survive your life for the betterment of others even when you yourself will not directly benefit from it? Dr. Henry Mohl s vision created a FIRM FOUNDATION and today Grundy County Memorial Hospital is serving and saving countless lives. I myself was taken to that hospital by ambulance 3 years ago following a severe fall on the ice. I am ever grateful for their compassionate and professional service. In a way, Dr. Mohl served me personally. Can the lesson of Dr. Henry Mohl be applied to us in our church? I say YES by putting effort and resources into our vision for Faith Presbyterian Church of Sun City. Dr. Mohl s vision came from seeing the need and dedicating his time and resources to find a way to fulfill it. He knew that he was helping create a future for others that he believed would carry on for generations to come. What vision do we have of our church that will survive our lives and carry on for generations to come? One thing is for certain. God s love for the world and the Holy Spirit of Christ among us is entering lives to give hope, healing and meaning to life. The creation of the church on earth was the vision and reality of Jesus. He started with one apostle and then another and then another. The Christian faith has spread throughout the world. The results of his vision continue to this day. In a similar way to Dr. Mohl whose vision outlasted his life, Jesus vision outlived his earthly life but his Spirit never died and neither does that of any Christian. How will we go about strengthening the foundation of Faith Presbyterian Church? It is for you who care so deeply about Faith Presbyterian Church and what happens beyond your lifetime that we are beginning an intentional effort emphasizing Planned Giving which enables you to provide for the present and for those who come next, those whom you may never know. There will be several opportunities in the next several months to discover the various options in which Planned Giving may be of interest to you and future sustainable support of our church. May the vision of Jesus Christ encourage and motivate us now and into the future. I rejoiced with those who said to me; let us go to the house of the LORD. May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity. Psalm 122 In Christ s service, Pastor Mike November/December Mustard Seed

3 I had to laugh Recently I was listening to one of our members describe a project that was getting ready to happen at our church. It was very interesting. I didn t know what the timeline was going to be (and I still don t, actually ). But as this member finished describing it, she offered this bit of encouragement, too: We ll get there! Like a herd o turtles, but we ll get there! I laughed out loud! (Maybe some of you have heard me laugh from time to time the sound of my laugh can be quite distinctive!!) But I laughed just thinking about what a Herd o Turtles might look like dozens, or hundreds, of big clunky creatures, close to the ground not real pretty, not a lot of finesse, but strong. And, when determined, nothing can get in their way for long. And they certainly ARE able to make their way from one place to another! I think I remember some National Geographic or other film special on hundreds, maybe thousands, of turtles traversing some great distance, over sand and rocks, through water and wind, despite all interferences and distractions They get there! I certainly have felt rather turtle-ish in some ways this past year. Are all my boxes unpacked from a year ago? Nope. Did I get intended cards and letters to all my old friends? A few, perhaps Did I get THAT Project, Writing, Errand, Recipe, Phone Call, Exercise, Trip DONE? Well it depends. Sometimes in the midst of something, when I had thought and hoped I would have been so much further along by now, it can be hard to see but, Progress Has Been Made! And frankly, in one category after another after another, when I pause and step back to take a look, I can see that much ground has been covered, much accomplished, much done! On one thing after another, like that tortoise that wins the race with the hare, I ve either gotten there, or I am getting there! Our wonderful church is the same way. If you make a list of all of the possible things that could have gotten done, and ask if we ve done it all, I guess the answer could be Nope! But if you ask if Anything got done, Any goal accomplished, Any relationships enhanced, Any spiritual growth, Any new endeavors, Any answers to Prayer, the response would have to be, OMIGOODNESS, There Has Been SOOO Much that has happened, and it is WONDERFUL! Like a Herd o Turtles. The progress made in our Sunday worship, our special music, our campus beauty and maintenance, visitation, prayer, classes, speakers, programs, advertising/public relations, staff accomplishments, people of our church getting to know one another better AND drawing nearer to the Lord it has been astounding! Just to list titles of all the terrific things going on here would take more paper than this entire newsletter full of paragraphs and stories. We re getting there! We re getting somewhere! And we ll KEEP getting there! Pastor Sheryl Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out. James Bryant Conant, US chemist, diplomat, & educator ( ) But you shall seek the place that the LORD your God will choose to put his name there. You shall go there, bringing your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks. And you shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your households together, rejoicing in all the undertakings in which the LORD your God has blessed you. Deuteronomy 12:5-7 The Bible, Torah/Books of Moses. This expression usually means to recall something familiar and being reminded of something. Do you remember the familiar sounds of the Bell Choir playing anthems in our sanctuary? If you do, you remember what a beautiful addition to the worship experience the Bell Choir adds. I am planning to resume the Bell Choir this fall with current members. New Bell Choir members are always needed and welcome, with or without musical experience. So far, I am scheduling our practices for Thursdays from 2 to 3pm in the sanctuary. Please contact me if you are interested. A starting date is to be determined. Pastor Mike. Mark your calendars for this special Stewardship offering and celebration November 11. I would like to give a big public THANK YOU for Memorial Gifts that were recently made known to us and released for use for choir music. What a delight to add to our files many anthems that are well-matched for the number we have in our choir, and our choir s particular musical strengths! Our congregation already heard one of these our first Sunday of the Fall season, a strong rendition of Come, Christians, Join to Sing! You will be hearing several more over the 2018/19 year, including at least two in the Christmas season. Thank you to the following families/individuals, as well as some anonymous, who made this possible: Henry Bumgardner, Jeanette & Wilson Yost, and John Urwiler. Also, thanks to Thad Dolliff, who designated that recent gifts in memory of his wife would go to the choir these were given at or near Verla Dolliff s memorial service by Barbara Munn, Helen Garwood, and Ken & Kathy Schaller. 5 From your Parish Nurse Did you know that one in four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year?! The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that falls cause 3 million emergency room visits, 800,000 hospitalizations and 28,000 deaths annually. Each fall doubles the risk of falling again and increases the likelihood of an early death. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Why are we falling? As we age often we struggle with joint pain due to arthritis and a decreased muscle mass which can have a negative effect on mobility. Diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis, Parkinson s disease, Alzheimer s and vision loss, as well as medications used to treat these conditions, increase the risk of falls. Medications can cause weakness, dizziness and mental changes which play a role in increased fall risk. What can we do? By practicing a few gentle at home exercises on a regular basis you can increase strength, balance and coordination to help decrease the risk of falling. Exercises should be done holding on to a sturdy chair or railing that can be used for balance. Never do any exercise if it is too challenging or causes pain. It s best to have your Doctor s approval prior to exercise. Tight rope - walk in a straight line holding your arms out to your sides (or use a rail or your kitchen counter top to balance). Keep your back straight, your tummy tight and head held high. Try steps. Rock the baby- put your feet shoulder width apart. Shoulders back, hold head up, then rock side to side, lifting your foot off the floor, like a rocking a baby. Heel toe walk- keep your back straight, tummy tight and head up, walk placing one foot in front of the other. Try to walk backward also. Focusing your eyes on a fixed spot will help you maintain balance. Try steps. Flamingo stand- stand on one leg, pull up the other leg like a flamingo and try to maintain balance for 10 seconds, then balance on opposite leg. Be sure to hold on to the back of a sturdy chair if you need help to steady yourself. *Do exercises at least 2-3x weekly, try 2 repetitions and increase as able. Always maintain good posture. Head up, shoulders back, straight back and tighten your tummy!! Better balance and better strength will help so you don t fall!! Blessings, Nurse Cathie Nurse Cathie Hiding your talent, I mean. Or perhaps you know someone who is doing so. Faith Church is blessed with members who are very talented in many ways. 9 MAKE YOUR ANNUAL PLEDGE AND SAVE TAXES Please let Karen Heimbigner (Finance Office) know if your donation is for 2018 or 2019 ( ext.102). She will also provide you with the Tax ID necessary for you to make your donation Do you write a check, pay cash, or use direct deposit from your checking or savings account for your monthly or weekly church pledge? Depending on your tax bracket you likely have paid taxes on that money. Here is a way to save taxes and maybe donate more. If you have a Traditional IRA, 401K, or 403B you know about the RMD (required minimum distribution) that has to be taken each year after 70½. Because these investments were funded with pre-tax dollars, the RMD is taxed, so the government still gets their percent. However the government does allow a direct donation from the investment to a church or charity, and that amount is tax free to you. Do you own shares of stock that has multiplied and appreciated? Cashing this out will also create a tax event. Consider transferring shares to the church to meet or exceed your pledge and again neither you nor the church will have to pay tax. Both of these strategies are tax free even if you are younger than 70½. To find out more you can consult your banker, broker, or accountant. Also feel free to contact the church financial advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors in Peoria with questions or for assistance. His contact information is: Brian Jeffries, Vice President- Investments Maybe one of these strategies would allow you to increase your annual pledge by the amount of tax you would pay, or more. Think about it. (Please Note: This does not apply to Roth IRA s or pensions. You can donate those dollars after they are paid to you, but they are only tax deductible to a limited extent NOT tax free). All Saints Sunday, November 4 will be a very special day in worship. We will honor those Faith members who have passed away since this time last year, by naming their names in worship and offering prayers of thanksgiving for their lives. Committee/Coordinating meeting Thursday, December 13, 10:00 a.m. GATHERING - DECEMBER 20 GUESTS (WOMEN AND MEN) ARE WELCOME Fellowship 10:30 a.m. Devotions and Program 11:00 a.m. Catered Luncheon ($7) 12:00 noon JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON! 10 The Great Alone/Kristin Hannah Alaska, 1974 Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam War a change and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision. He will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America s last true frontier. Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature. Killers of the Flower Moon/David Grann (970.1/Gra) Non-Fiction In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. Disturbing and riveting..it will sear your soul. Eggers, NYT Sing, Unburied, Sing/Jesmyn Ward We journey through Mississippi s past and present examining the ugly truths at the heart of the American Story and the power and limitations of family bonds. Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans sets out to demonstrate just how seriously she takes the Bible. Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Her previous book, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions was one of Faith library s favorite reads. In Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon, the three things you should know about Elsie are that first, she is Florence s best friend. The second thing is that she always knows what to say to make Florence feel better. And the third thing might take a bit more explaining. Eighty-four-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she thinks about her friend Elsie and wonders if a terrible secret from their past is about to come to light. If the charming new resident is who he claims to be, why does he look exactly like a man who died sixty years ago? Cannon s book is a delight from start to finish! When the Lights Go Out/Boyle In October, 2003, at age 9, Ryan suffers a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). And then is given a second chance. His inspirational story was cited in one of Pastor Mike s sermons. Henry Nave (who is mentioned in the book) has donated his copy to our library. Ryan is now a Paralympic athlete and an inspirational speaker. Rich with Ward s distinctive, lyrical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an unforgettable family story. 11 Sponsored by Presbyterian Women Unaccompanied children enter the United States every year from countries all over the world. Some come to escape extreme violence in their home countries; some are trafficked into the country. Some come to work, others to escape physical abuse and desperate poverty. Hacienda del Sol is a shelter in Youngtown that houses up to 139 of these children ages infant to 17 while they are awaiting resolution to their legal cases. This year we are partnering with SW Key, the non-profit organization that runs Hacienda del Sol, in order to provide Christmas gifts for these children, many of whom arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs. A Giving Tree in the Narthex beginning Wednesday, Nov. 28 will allow church members and friends to select tags identifying children by their age and gender. Unwrapped gifts may be brought to the church up until Sunday, Dec. 16. Gift ideas will be printed in the bulletins during November Sylvia Mendoaz, Regional Director for Southwest Key stated there are currently no children at Hacienda del Sol however, their return is expected, and hoped for, shortly. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP YOUR GIFTS Changes: Please make sure you note the following changes in your Church directory. Thank you, congregation and staff for your hospitality throughout the year for your friendship, fellowship, working, playing, praying and breaking bread together. We look forward to continuing with you in ministry in the name of Jesus, to the Glory of God! Mike & Sheryl Campbell PLEASE NOTE: We comply with HIPAA Laws. Please notify us, or have someone other than the hospital notify us, if you are admitted to the hospital. At Faith Presbyterian Church we seek to be effective and consistent in our pastoral care. That care is dependent on members notifying the church when either they, or a family member, enter the hospital. If the office is closed please call Pastor Mike s cell phone or Pastor Sheryl Please call the office: When you or a member of your family is admitted to the hospital so that visits can be arranged and the proper people notified. When a new family moves into your neighborhood. When your class or group plans to meet so that a room can be reserved for you and placed on the church calendar. When either your home address or phone number changes so the church records can be amended. When you are planning to move- either out of town or locally. When you feel the church can assist you in any way. November/December Mustard Seed
