2 Pastor s Notebook February 12, 2012 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Romans 11: 36 Last weekend we held our Confirmation Retreat 2012 at Black Lake Bible Camp here in Olympia. Fifty youth from our parish converged on Black Lake Bible Camp coming from all different races, backgrounds and quite frankly, coming for different reasons. A good percentage of the youth attend Confirmation because their parents require it and even if their parents don t say so, the youth know the disappointment that their parents will feel if they don t go through with this. For other youth, they are really trying to grab hold of their faith, understand it and make it their own. Then, there are all the youth in between. It doesn t matter why they come for Jesus as it says in Matthew 19: 14, Let all the children come unto me and do not prevent them. I firmly believe with all of my heart that the power of our Sacraments does not rest in our will or effort. They are a supernatural outpouring of the Grace of God through the power of the Holy Spirit in the matter and form of each Sacrament. Our retreat is called the Emmaus retreat. It is based on the story in Luke 24 about the two disciples who encounter Christ. They walk with him for quite a while and don t even realize it is He until they break bread with Him. It s not until they receive Eucharist, after Jesus resurrection from the tomb, that they realize they d been walking and talking with our very Lord, Jesus. Looking back, the men ask, Were not our hearts burning? Yes, all of our hearts are burning. This is exactly what happened this past weekend. No matter why the youth came, their hearts were burning with the desire to know Jesus more intimately. As we gathered for Reconciliation, Adoration & Mass, their hearts were opened through the power of His Grace. As we played fun games, challenges, and heard speakers, the Holy Spirit moved in their lives. Fifty Seven hours put into one weekend can be exhausting but it is times like these, after a draining but rewarding weekend that I sit in awe of God s love and compassion. It is times like these that I sit in humility of the many folks who give so much of themselves to help out. I want to thank the folks who helped make this retreat possible. To all the catechists- Jamie & Jessi Oakland, Patrick & Celina Mendel, Jenn & John McCauley, Laurie Karjalahti & Terri Rincon. To my dear friend and Crew chief, John Bergford. He has been the right hand on many of our retreats and I know when he is at the helm, the Holy Spirit will move. To the Adult Crew who came to help out- Paula Rosencrantz, Ben Caoile, Mandy Baker, Kathleen Barkis. To the Youth Crew- Nishanthi Perrerra, Allie Baker, Austin Neal, Emma Mahr & Brigidanne Brennan. To all the staffthere are too many to name but a special thank you to the Faith Formation administrative support, Mary-Jo, who works tirelessly to support all the efforts of Faith Formation. Finally, our guest musician for the weekend and recent convert to the Catholic church, Josh Burdick and his lovely wife, Karla. A special thanks to Fr. Dwight, our spiritual leader who brought Jesus into our hearts, minds and souls. All of you helped usher in a mighty presence of the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit come! This is the cry of Confirmation. In Jesus time, lepers were considered condemned, part of the plagues God sent as punishment. They were cast out of society and abandoned. St. Mark s Gospel reveals the unthinkable. Jesus reaches out and touches a leper. He risks catching the contagious disease and heals the man. As the gospel story teaches, no one is abandoned in Christ. Are there those in our society or in our personal lives for whom we ascribe no hope, who we have abandoned, treated like lepers? Or as Christ s stewards of our sisters and brothers, do we risk reaching out and touching those who may seem to us to be unclean or not worthy of our time or attention? Div, founder of the One Body Village, will discuss a number of interesting topics. Fr. Martino has personally rescued children from brothels and is one of the few pioneers to bring international awareness to this social issue. He has published numerous articles, presented at multiple national conventions, and appeared on various TV and radio shows. Fr. Martino also serves as the Vice Chaplain General of Academic Affairs for the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Society in America. For more information, contact Marriann Tefft at Campus and Buildings Security In order to continue to be proactive in assuring our Church buildings and campus are as safe as possible for our parishioners and visitors, we will soon implement enhanced security measures. While one may ask if our actions are reactive, we want to stress that our decision was not based on any one specific event. However, in the interest of providing as safe an environment as possible, these safety precautions are being rolled out, effective February 6, 2012 Gathering Space Downtown Church: We will limit the time the Gathering Space is unlocked and available to the public: The building will be unlocked at 9 am daily and locked at 9 pm, Monday through Friday. For any event scheduled prior to 9 am, arrangements must be made to pick up a key prior to the event. Access to the Gathering Space will be limited to three primary public entrances: the main front doors and the doors with the automatic opener (east and west). All other perimeter doors will remain locked at all times. Signs will be posted at all entrances to the Gathering Space stating: No Public Rest Rooms Available. Lobby to St Vincent de Paul Clothing Bank and Pregnancy Aid: The lobby will be open only during following schedule: Monday through Friday: 8 am to 4 pm Saturday: 8 am to 11:30 am. When no services are being offered, the doors will be locked. And again, when attending Mass at either of our parish sites, we ask that you accompany your child/children to the restrooms during Mass and between Masses.

6 School & Other News FASTING BEFORE COMMUNION and WHO HAS DISPENSATION Please Read! Since many parishioners frequently ask about fasting and who has dispensation, here are the current norms regarding fasting before communion (Canon No. 919): "1. One who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion. 3. Those who are advanced in age or who suffer from any infirmity, as well as those who take care of them, can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they have taken something during the previous hour." The fast is before communion and not before Mass. The hour's fast is from all edible food and drink other than water, taken by mouth and swallowed. Chewing gum involves swallowing the juices and flavors released by the chewing process and this would break the fast. Please note that chewing gum in the Church, whether Mass is celebrated or not, is disrespectful. Save the Date! Sunday, March 11 th will be our Open House/Registration Day. 7 Social Ministries ENTERTAINMENT EXPLOSION PRESENTS: A Really Big Shoe Six A benefit concert for the 1,702 homeless children attending 8 local school districts in Thurston and Mason Counties and the thousands served by Community Youth Services. SideWalk is the Intake Center that serves homeless women and men in our community and is a project of Interfaith Works. Its mission is to end homeless through community engagement and coordination of services. SideWalk is operated by well trained volunteers who provide a safety net for their clients by offering assessments, referrals and personalized support. For more information and to volunteer call Emma Margraf at St. Vincent de Paul Collection: Today The monthly St. Vincent de Paul collection is today after each mass. The recent snowstorm hit everybody hard, including the poor. Everybody was affected by the storm and a little assistance and compassion from each other went a long way. One place that the poor get the assistance and compassion they need is at the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where Vincentians faithfully listen to them; refer them to housing, medical, or other service providers; and of course offer financial assistance when needed for rent, heat, prescriptions, and more. All of this is made possible by the donations from the people of St. Michael Parish. The St. Vincent de Paul Society thanks all the members of St. Michael Parish for their ongoing and generous support. Important Information from the Washington State Catholic Conference Legislation is being considered in Washington State which would require all private health insurers to cover abortion services if they offer maternity care. HB 2330 and SB 6185 would not offer an exemption to employers who are morally opposed to abortion, nor to employees who do not wish to pay premiums to cover abortion services. The abortion coverage mandate not only violates a fundamental right to religious liberty, but also stands in direct violation of federal law. The Hyde/Weldon Amendment of the Labor/HHS appropriations bill of 2011 forbids any federal, state, or local government from creating an abortion coverage mandate. Violation of the Hyde/ Weldon Amendment risks all federal funding from the appropriations bill for health, education, and labor. Please contact your state Representatives and Senator and urge them to uphold rights of conscience and respect federal law by voting NO on HB 2330 and SB Bread for the World advocates were able to prevent major cuts last year to critical programs for hungry and poor people. But many of these programs still face cuts as Congress looks for ways to reduce the deficit. We need to protect what we ve achieved. That s why our 2012 Offering of Letters focuses on protecting programs that are essential to vulnerable people at home and abroad. 8 Faith Formation A Peek Inside the Atrium What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at St. Michael? 60 children attend weekly sessions in the Atrium, a specially prepared environment in which catechists provide hands on faith formation for children between 3 and 12. During Advent, children listened to and proclaimed the words of the prophets. Voices raised in song could be heard frequently in the Atrium, reminding us that the people who walked darkness have seen a great light. 3-9 year olds listened to scripture proclaiming the Annunciation and the Visitation and reflected on these stories individually using dioramas and figures. Even the youngest children broadened their understanding of advent scripture by pouring over a relief map of Israel. Older children revisited the prophets through bible study in which they compared the way God called different prophets into ministry and considered how that might impact their own call. The older children also assisted in leading an Epiphany prayer service for the whole CGS community. Between 70 and 80 people attended. One grace-filled moment occurred when four children processed forward with figures of the guiding star, the magi, and their gifts, placing them on a prayer table with a nativity scene. All children then came forward and surrounded our prayer table with donated baby care items for Pregnancy Aid. It was a fitting conclusion to a faith-filled Advent and Christmas season in the Atrium. We work with both political parties to craft and adopt legislation that has helped millions of people in the United States and abroad lift themselves out of poverty and hunger. Our more than 73,000 members, including 5,000 local congregations involving nearly a million Christians, enable us to achieve this ambitious mission. Here s an easy way to support Bread for the World and make a difference: Please join with Beyond JustFaith in Bread for the World Offering of Letters to our legislators after Masses next weekend, February 18 and 19. There will be a letter available to sign or you are welcome to compose your own. In just a few minutes you can help to make a huge difference for many who have no voice. This year the offering of letters will focus on changes on four fronts: A stronger US government focus on reducing poverty Clearer accountability for how US aid dollars are spent and their results A transformed US development agency US aid that meets the needs and wants of local people Why do we do this? And why should you participate? They will hunger no more and thirst no more. (Revelation 7:16) Throughout Scripture, God offers abundance and an end to hunger. Loving our neighbors includes sharing abundance. Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.
