2 Pastor s Notebook: May 27 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. 1 Cor. 12:7 I pray that God s abundant grace be with you and your family this Pentecost. While most Americans will be celebrating Memorial Day with trips, barbeques, ball games and other activities, we take time to bring to conclusion our great 50 day celebration of Easter as we celebrate Pentecost. I love this reflection I read in Living with Christ: The Holy Spirit is throwing a birthday party and we Christ s followers are invited! It s Pentecost, the Church s birthday. Pentecost can be for us a time of renewal, of re-creation, as we open up the birthday presents the Spirit gives.gifts are given to everyone, including the gift of mission, of ministry.every gift enables us to be of service to the Church and to the world. We show our appreciation for the gifts we have received by using them! As a wise spiritual director once told me, Gifts are given to be given away Jim, not to be held on to. Give yourself away more and more and you ll find that you re not diminished but enriched. Give yourself away! The next two weekends, we will be celebrating the gifts of Stewardship as we focus on our Time and Talents and renewing our commitment of service to the Body of Christ. As you receive information about the many ministries of the parish, please pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and for an open, willing heart to follow where the Spirit will be guiding you to serve and to find new life. Thanks to each and everyone of you who have served this past year (and for some, many, many years). Please join me in welcoming Fr. Christopher Wanyoni from Christ the King Cathedral Parish, Bungoma, Kenya who will be preaching this weekend about his ministry in Kenya. This annual mission appeal helps our brothers and sisters in various parts of the world. We will tithe 10% of this Sunday s offerings so please be generous. Thank you. As I was looking at summer schedules, I want to draw your attention to something new we are offering for K-7 graders. Dave Whitesell, Steward for Life Teen, is offering summer soccer, basketball and art camps. These camps are geared especially for our kids and will have a prayer and faith component woven into them. If you want more information, please go to our website. Please continue to pray for our Principal Search. The committee met last Tuesday and is finalizing the interview process and reviewed teacher, staff and parent input as to what are the qualities most needed for our school at this time. Congratulations to Pam and Sam Pellegrino who were chosen for Family of the Year for State and our own Council as Council of the Year! Thank you to my brother Knights for all the good that you do. Mass on Monday, Memorial Day at 9:00am, will be at the Downtown Church. There will be a special prayer service and blessing at our Calvary Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. followed by coffee and donuts. We commemorate the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles like tongues of fire, giving them the grace and the strength they needed to carry out Christ s work here on Earth, to proclaim the Good News of all Christ had done, and to spread the Faith throughout the world. If you have not yet made your gift, give online today it s quick and easy! It is critical that we hear back from everyone to ensure our success of meeting this year s goal. LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS The Blessing of the Themes We are continuing to explore the gift and genius that is present in each of the Signature Themes of Talent as explored in Living Your Strengths. Watch for those in your top five themes! The Blessing of Communication The blessing of your Communication talent is found in the profound fact that you can find words for your thoughts and feelings. Many people have lots of good ideas, but stumble in finding words to capture and convey their good thoughts. Yet, you can do this with ease. The real blessing of your talent doesn t stop there. You can help other people express their thoughts and feelings as is seen in the way you can often complete people s sentences or find the word that they cannot find. As a result, you can form deep, meaningful and bonded relationships and help others do the same. How do you use your Communication strength in service of God and others?

6 School News! School Registration We have openings in several grades for next school year. As parents, our greatest gift to our children is their education their Catholic education. St. Michael School has a rich tradition of academic excellence within a faith-filled, caring environment. Tuition scholarships are available. 7 Social Ministries GIVING BUS For many years St. Michael Parish has supported the people of our community with an annual school supply distribution for area students in need. You have been very generous in donating school supplies a n d m o n e y t o m a k e t h i s program successful. There is opportunity this year to coordinate the project. If you are an organizer and are looking for a time limited way to serve please contact Mary in the Parish Office at FOOD BANK There is a vacancy in our Food Bank volunteer group and therefore an opportunity to participate in this important ministry. We need to have the donations from the Westside driven to the Thurston County Food Bank on the first Monday of every month. If you are interested, call Mary in the parish office at Thurston County Food Bank Collection Next weekend June 2 and 3- is the collection for the Thurston County Food Bank and the YWCA Other Bank. Please put your donations of non-perishable food items and hygiene items on the tables at the far end of the right side of the gathering space. Anything you are able to give is very much needed and appreciated. If you d like to make a cash donation, please use one of the blue bordered envelopes on the donation table, but DO NOT leave it on the table. Please put your envelope in the collection or give it to one of the hospitality folks. Family Preservation Foster Care Program Catholic Community Services (CCS) of Western Washington Family Preservation Foster Care Program is seeking families that are interested in becoming licensed foster parents. There is a dire need for foster parents and families that are willing to provide a stable environment for children in need. Our Family Preservation Program works with children, ages 8-17 years old, who have experienced a great deal of trauma in their lives. Our children are in need of a temporary, safe and stable home to live in until they can be reunited with a relative, which is the ultimate goal of the Family Preservation Program. If you want to ensure you get a VBS t-shirt, you must register in May! Calling all folks who have fun with art! We are creating 20 characters from Tanzania, Mexico, Russia, Vietnam and the USA to decorate the Westside for VBS. We will give you the fabric, tacky glue, paper and markers to create 10 foot high children to hold hands around our gathering space at VBS! think of it as dressing giant paper dolls!
