One of the most anxiety producing elements is the pressure to always sound profound; like you actually have something meaningful to say. One s prayers must be profound; but most are mundane. One s sermons must be profound; but I ll admit that just doesn t always happen. And of course one s monthly addition to the newsletter must be profound. But you know what, sometimes there s just nothing profound to say. And that creates a lot of anxiety. I kind of wonder if Jesus ever had days like that Hey folks, sorry, but I just don t have anything new or profound to say today. Maybe profound is a bit strong. I d really just kind of settle for meaningful. I recently read that of all those who go into ordained ministry, 90% don t make it to retirement. Maybe performance anxiety is part of that. Well, that being said, let me share a couple mundane items. Before the month of November is over we will be in the season of Advent. Advent is not mundane, but sacred. It is a time when we remember the coming of Christ into the world and it is a time of SPIRITUAL preparation for that coming. It is a time to renew a welcome of Christ into our lives and a time to renew our efforts at creating God s Beloved Community. To help us in this venture, our Advent study series this year we will be looking at how God is presented in one of the most influential modern vehicles for presenting theology; the movies. Which movies we will watch is still up to all of you to decide, but which ever movies we look at we will be looking at the themes of how God is perceived, redemption, eschatology, the Christ function, and theodicy. If you re interested in joining us, or in knowing what a couple of those words mean, please watch for coming announcements. In the mean time, I hope you all have a very profound and meaningful Thanksgiving. 8:30AM Choir - 9AM Sunday School 10AM Service of Celebration 2 4 Nov 2013 Our Mission Statement Our Church is dedicated to the love of God as demonstrated by Jesus Christ and inspired by the Holy Spirit. We demonstrate our love of God through everyday living. Everyone is welcome to join us as we grow in our faith and in our relationship with God and each other through worship, teaching, caring and fellowship.

We are making a promise to God as well as providing a financial plan for the church. The pledges are a blueprint for our budget. Your pledges are very important to the plan for our church. Have you ever noticed that nearly everything in life involves a plan? hat would your personal budget look W like without a plan? You need to know how much money it will take to pay for essential living expenses. What If you went to the mall and spent the money you planned to pay your rent or mortgage with? A personal budget helps keep the impulse buying in check and helps keep you out of the mall. f you plan on performing a song, you must I practice. The practicing is the blueprint for the performance. ow about sports? The coach has a H game plan each week for facing an opponent. f you plan on having a healthy diet, you I must plan what you will eat so you can have those ingredients available and not resort to less desirable choices when hunger strikes. f you want to begin an exercise program, I you need a plan and a goal to keep yourself motivated. hen you travel, you need a plan to W keep you on the right road or on the right flight. It might be hard to get to your destination without a plan. e can all think of countless examples W of planning in our lives. I am all for spontaneity but when it comes to financial planning for our church, I do want to know how we will pay our bills and what we plan to dedicate to the work and love of God here at UCB. o, thank you in advance for your S pledges! will see you on Stewardship Sunday, I November 10th when we dedicate those pledges. 3 Nov Prayers for from Peggy Stevens for Africa, especially Kenya and Nigeria with joy for their neice, Tegan Plock, serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal the flood victims Geni Klagstad (co-worker of Beth Engle) and her two young adult aged kids. Their husband/father Jim Fogelberg was killed in a bicycle vs car accident of celebration - Beth Engle s niece Faith Ann Engle was born this morning around 7:40am. She weighs 6 lb, 15 oz and is 19 inches long. Mom and baby are both doing well! Laura O'Kelly's mother who had hip replacement surgery the Vuksinich Family in the passing into new life last Saturday of Delores Payne, sister of Lana Vuksinich Kristi Foshee family as her father passed into new life unexpectedly. Shannon Kelly and her family as her mother passed from this life. Shannon lost her father just over a year ago and her mother was diagnosed with very aggressive terminal cancer just a few months ago. Please remember to either fill out a blue card in the pews on Sunday or Pastor Greg ucbucc@aol.com with your prayer requests. Says Sandy from Assistant Pastor Sandy Cheatham 3 Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice Sometimes I have songs pop up in my head and they often don t fit the situation. This song popped up after a rather intense meltdown by my 11year old teenager. I wanted to strangle him not rejoice. I required something more heavy metal, but what I got was an upbeat catchy hymn. God works in mysterious ways. The song got me out of my funk and got me wondering about rejoicing in the midst of tribulation. I thought of Jesus waking in the middle of turbulent seas and asking the disciples where was their faith. I imagine their faith was lost in their fear; I know mine often gets lost in fear and anger. What do you let overtake your faith? November is the month for Thanksgiving and I intend to spend the month rejoicing even amidst tribulation. I intend to create a list of things I m thankful for, adding to it each day through the end of November perhaps I ll keep going after that. Will you join me? Will you take the time to consider your blessings this month? Make a list and carry it with you. When you feel overwhelmed by the world, take it out and read through it. Force yourself to add another thing to be thankful for. Perhaps when I lead service on November 17th we can sing Rejoice in the Lord and mean it. Blessings to you Each, Sandy I am grateful for my ability to be a mother my patient, loving husband great friends who support me no matter what God calling me to be a pastor all of my adopted moms and grandmothers learning how to cook and the joy that comes with each new creation

5 Nov KSK Update Submitted by Linda Neville, KSK Director We are excited about how our new Kindies program is going! This is a cooperative effort between Kohl Street Kids and the Preschool and provides our version of kindergarten enrichment for children in morning kindergarten at Kohl Elementary. Preschool staff pick up our six Kindies then supervise recess and lunch. Miss Jane, who has many years' experience teaching kindergarten, takes over after lunch and leads the children with intentional play and learning activities. Topics so far have included colors, numbers, apples, fall, safety, pumpkins, spiders, and of course Halloween. She is doing a great job, children are learning and having fun, and we are hopeful this is the first of many years of growing this program. News from the Preschool submitted by Nancy McKee, Director The Preschool will once again be holding our holiday food drive for FISH which is our local food bank. With the recent floods and the Government shutdown, which affected food stamps, there is great need at this time. The following items are of the greatest needs: Peanut Butter Canned Fruit Diapers size 4, 5, & 6 Baby formula Personal care items; toilet paper, toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo, hand soap, hand lotion, deodorant & mouthwash All non-perishable foods are welcome, too! There will be a box in the hall outside the CE/preschool office for you to drop off your items. Thanks so much for your generosity. This is a great way to teach the children about the importance of helping others. Transitional Housing Drive- October 27th We will be collecting cleaning and personal care items to take up to the transitional housing units in Lafayette. They are full to capacity with flood victims and will continue to house families who need shelter as they rebuild or repair their homes. We will have stickies with specific items or you can always donate toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, all-purpose cleaner, toothpaste, deodorant and diapers of any size. FISH donations for November Broomfield FISH is in need of the following items for Thanksgiving food boxes: Potatoes Stuffing Cake mix Canned milk Jello Canned fruit Food boxes will be assembled at the Methodist Church on Nov 16th Thanksgiving Collection for Denver Inner City Parish We will be collecting items for Thanksgiving Dinner to be served at the Denver Inner City Parish. We will collect items from 9AM to 10AM on Saturday, Nov 16th. Please bring all the items you would have for your Thanksgiving Dinner, including frozen turkeys and pumpkin pies. If you can t do the shopping, you can purchase grocery cards and donate those to the cause. The Sojourners Adult Class meets in Pastor Greg s office. We are using Seasons of the Spirit curriculum. Spirit Sightings are intended to lift up international news stories and current events, linking these to the lectionary passages for each Sunday. All are welcome to join us. Pat s Adult Class - The Adult Sunday School class that meets in the Steele Commons Room will continue their study on the life of Jesus throughout November. All are welcome to join us. For more information on this study, please contact Pat James.

6 6 Nov 2013 A congregation is only as strong as the support it provides to it's youngest members. A child's Christian education and development is not only important for that child's own theological and spiritual growth, but for a congregation's growth as well." -Anonymous Christian Education is keeping busy with our new Sunday School curriculum, Spark. The children are learning core stories from the Bible, with good discussion and insight. We have a group of committed teachers for each age range, along with many additional adults who help regularly. 7 Nov Contemplation OK, you haven t heard from me in a while. I guess others had information to share and I didn t. Regardless, now you re getting some words from the editor. God blesses us all in many ways on a daily basis...it s just sometimes we don t see them as blessings. What is a blessing? Wikipedia says that A blessing is the infusion of something with holiness, spiritual redemption, divine will, or one s hope or approval. That s quite a definition covers almost the whole gambit doesn t it? Infusion is usually something we relate to a chemical process...infusing tastes into foods of beverages...amount of time herbs are left in a liquid to provide a specific taste. But, what does it mean in a blessing? I think infusion in a blessing is giving of ourselves. It could be infusing our belief in a supreme being it could be infusing our desire for redemption or forgiveness...it could be our hope or desire for approval. Regardless of the intent, a true blessing must involve some element of our personal beliefs and feelings and faith. I believe we are all recipients of blessings it s just sometimes we don t realize it as a blessing. Maybe you can look for the blessings in your life. -Gary McKee, editor
