3 SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING OF THE UNIVERSE November 22, 2015 I am the Alpha and Omega, the one who is, who was and who is to come Rev 1:5-8 What s the truth Jesus comes to bear witness to in this last Gospel of the Church s year? It s the truth that in Jesus, God keeps the promise He made to David - of an everlasting kingdom, of an heir who would be His Son, the first born, highest of the kings of the earth (2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 89:27-38). Today s Second Reading, taken from the Book of Revelation, quotes these promises and celebrates Jesus as the faithful witness. The reading hearkens back to Isaiah s prophecy that the Messiah would witness to the peoples that God is renewing His everlasting covenant with David (Isaiah 55:3-5). But as Jesus tells Pilate, there s far more going on here than the restoration of a temporal monarchy. In the Revelation reading, Jesus calls Himself the Alpha and the Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. He s applying to Himself a description that God uses to describe Himself in the Old Testament - the first and the last, the One Who calls forth all generations (Isaiah 41:4;44:6; 48:12). He has made the world, today s Psalm cries, and His dominion is over all creation (Jn 1:3; Col 1:16-17). In the vision of Daniel we hear in today s First Reading, He comes on the clouds of heaven - another sign of His divinity - to be given glory and kingship forever over all nations and peoples. Christ is King and His Kingdom, while not of this world, exists in this world in the Church. We are a royal people. We know we have been loved by Him and freed by His blood and transformed into a Kingdom, priests for His God and Father (Ex 19:6; 1 Peter 2:9). As a priestly people, we share in His sacrifice and in His witness to God s everlasting covenant. We belong to His truth and listen to His voice, waiting for Him to come again amid the clouds. Yours in Christ, Scott Hahn, Ph.D. HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS: General Intention: That we may be open to personal encounter and dialogue with all, even those whose convictions differ from our own. Missionary Intention: That pastors of the Church, with profound love for their flocks, may accompany them and enliven their hope. All that has been created has been made for You. Exercise upon me all Your rights. I renew my baptismal promises renouncing Satan and all his works and pomps. I promise to lead a good Christian life and to do all in my power to procure the triumph of the rights of God and Your Church. 4 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 11/21 Peyton McGee 11/22 Luke Villagran, Maria Romero 11/25 Alexandra Foreman HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Jose & Maggie Novoa Nov. 22 Martin & Leticia Cruz Nov. 22 Chris & Jo Jackson Nov. 23 MONTH 8 Developing Baby Spiritual Adoption Program Your spiritually adopted baby is increasing in size and strength. Because of his larger size he is not able to move as freely about in his mother s womb. He is receiving from his mother precious immunities to a number of diseases that will last until he is about six months old and able to begin building up his own immunities. His mother is patiently waiting for the last weeks of pregnancy to pass. She depends on your prayerful support. During this next month we will be collecting gifts to provide for mothers in need. There is a box in the office to place your donations, such as diapers, wipes, etc. Thank you for your participation, and keep praying for your spiritual baby. The month of November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory. With the exception of the last Sunday, November falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time and is represented by the liturgical color green. The last Sunday, which marks the beginning of the Advent season, the liturgical color changes to purple, representing a time of penance. ALTAR FOR THE DEAD November is the Month of the Dead. Please feel free to place photographs of your deceased loved ones on our Altar of the Dead. We will remember these loved ones and all the dead throughout November. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offenses and negligence s, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."
