4 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Dn 12:1-3 / Heb 10:11-14,18 / Mk 13:24-32 In his 2015 apostolic exhortation Laudato Si, On Care for our Common Home, Pope Francis expressed his desire to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home. (LS#3) Using this exhortation to summon people to take some sort of action, Francis asked all the people of the world to act on the increasingly dire state of our planet. Francis call to action echoes today s readings, which speak about great transformations, the end of life as we know it. All of these prophetic voices ask us to see the clear signs of change around us and to prepare for and guide these big changes in line with God s plan. When Jesus did things in a new way, he brought renewed salvation to the world. Francis also calls for a new way, saying our current attitude is that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs (#11). He reminds us that God instructed us to be stewards of the Earth, not to see it as a source of profit and gain (#82). Part of Francis new way is recognizing that we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation (#48). Our current path of exploitation and profit has led to extreme inequality as the gains go to the most powerful. Our preparation for a changing world should not be trying to grab the biggest piece of the pie for ourselves but instead, building the just, loving community we will need in the future. We see this message in today s first reading as well, which tells us that those judged well at the end of time will be those who lead the many to justice (Daniel 12:3). In the Gospel, Jesus uses the analogy of a fig tree, whose budding branches signal that summer is beginning. His message is clear: When we see the signs of coming change, we should pay attention. Francis also calls on us to heed the signs we see around us, and adds that it is not too late for action. The changes we can already see in our planet do not have to mean the end of it if we can come together and do something different. All is not lost. Human beings are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again what is good, and making a new start (LS #205). 5 ST. CYRIL WOMEN S FIRST SATURDAY December 1, :30 am-11:30 am Parish Hall TOPIC: Advent Again! Yet, No Ordinary Time The Church asks us to honor the four weeks before Christmas in advent. WHY? Every year we attempt to "wait" amid lights, manger scenes, and candy canes. Once again we await birthing as we remember and wonder. We will reflect together and imagine God's gift to us once again. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Peggy McGurn, PhD was a university instructor and has continued to apply her life experiences and education (a MA in Theology and a PhD in Clinical Psychology) to her private practice as a counselor, spiritual director, and facilitator of workshops and retreats. "Healing the Inner Child" and "Global Spirituality" are two of her published works. She has been a dedicated spiritual mentor for the women of St. Cyril for many years; bringing to us the experiences of deep prayer by leading us in the simplicity of connecting with God in relationship through prayer- a deeper communion with God. With great enthusiasm we welcome her back to lead our women's morning of reflection. ABOUT FIRST SATURDAY All women are invited to attend. We meet monthly on the first Saturday of each month from October through May to enjoy fellowship, refreshments and gifted speakers. No reservations are required. There is no charge, however, free will donations are accepted as this group is self-supporting. TAILGATE PARTY NOVEMBER 3rd

6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY Dear Catechists, THANKS-FOR-GIVING SO MUCH! I just wanted to publically thank our Catechists for all they do for our children and youth here in Religious Education. They not only make class fun but the kids are learning a lot about their faith and about living as Jesus wants us to live. Thank you for teaching them that we truly have a best friend in Jesus and so it is important to take the time to come be with him in class and at Mass every week. On this holiday of giving thanks I just wanted to say Thanks-for-Giving so much of yourselves and your time to the children of our parish. We couldn t do it without you! ~~ Mary Ellen, R.E. Coordinator THANKS HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH FOR ALL THE HARD WORK! The high school youth group hosted the Wilsonville Wildcats table at the Tailgate Party. The decorations were fabulous and the meatballs and cream puffs were delicious! Thanks Julie, Joe and Katy for making such tasty treats! Thanks for setting up and decorating our table Lila, Ximena, Nate, and Ricardo. It looked great! You were gracious servers and the parishioners had a chance to meet you and ask about your school. You showed super school spirit! What a great way to be the capital C kind of Catholic.
