1 HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER CROSSROADS SEPTEMBER 2016 Services of Worship 9:30 am A Party To Remember We began the summer with more than 100 kids and more than 50 volunteers at Cave Quest VBS 2016, and ended it with our First Annual Kick-Off Carnival. We had more than 30 kids show up in worship with their families to have their backpacks blessed. We also blessed them and our congregation s school teachers for the year. We gifted each kid with some Lutheran swag - a Holy Cross bag tag, a 7-Up-Lifter Message, and the Prayer Shawl Ministry team handed out pocket-size prayer shawls. I continued the tradition of preaching on an animated movie - Zootopia - and shared tips from the movie that offer good advice to kids and adults alike on the start of the school year. The First Annual Kick-Off Carnival was a three hour extravaganza of food, fun, and fellowship. We had a giant water slide, bounce house, dunk tank, Playstation and Nintendo Wii game stations, not to mention hot-dogs, chips, beverages, sno-cones, popcorn, and cotton candy. We had over 20 volunteers making the day run smoothly, and - Wow! - did it ever. Events like the Kick-Off Carnival and VBS at Holy Cross are among our best work, because it requires us to look beyond our membership. As we look ahead to the start of 2017 budgeting process, we need to really consider if the majority of dollars are being directed inward toward member happiness or if they re being directed outward to engage those who are not currently a part of the Holy Cross family. This is always a delicate line to walk, but it s still an important conversation. As we move into the fall season of ministry here at Holy Cross, here are a couple of items just around the corner: Dedication of renovated nursery on Sept. 4 following worship Outdoor worship, picnic, and dedication of renovated courtyard on Sept. 11 I hope to see you at both! 3 Page 3 ARE YOU READY FOR ORANGE? ON SEPTEMBER 18TH, OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM WILL BE UTILIZING ORANGE. THE ORANGE CURRICULUM (252 BASICS) is designed to provoke discovery and invite kids into a new understanding of how to grow a relationship with Jesus. THE 252 BASICS is based on one of three basic, but powerful, truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52. I need to make the wise choice. I can trust God no matter what. I should treat others the way I want to be treated. COME JOIN US ON THE 18TH! We work on making regular and pocket prayer shawls, bless the shawls that are turned in and enjoy the fellowship of getting together to share in this ministry. We hope you all had a great summer! 4 Page 4 Volume 56, 9 Issue Wednesday Forum: Wednesday forum will reconvene on Wednesday, September 7, in the music room at Holy Cross. We will be continuing with our video lectures from the Great Courses. We will begin with a course on The New Testament. The presenter is Professor Bart D. Ehrman, Ph.D. Professor Ehrman teaches religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his Ph.D., magna cum laude, at Princeton Theological Seminary. The course will begin with four lectures on the historical context in which the New Testament was written. This will be followed by a discussion of each New Testament book. The videos are about 20 minutes, so there is plenty of time for discussion. Hope you will join us. Holy Cross Book Club Discussions: Holy Cross book will meet on September 13 at Casse Croute Bakery, 50 S. Livermore, at 10:00am. We will be discussing the book Frangipani by Celestine Vaite. You are welcome to join us for a French pastry, coffee and a fun discussion. SAVE THE DATES - NOVEMBER 4 5 for the Crafty Ladies Holiday Bazaar Mark your calendar NOW. Weekly meetings will begin on September 13 in preparation for the BIG event. Crafting together since there s something for everyone at the Holiday Bazaar. YOU will not want to miss this one. In recognition of U.N. International Day of Peace Saturday, Sept. 17, 5:00-7:00 p.m. The Pavilion at LDS church, 1501 Hillcrest community potluck picnic Come join us as we eat, play, and converse with people from our diverse communities, including Baha i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Unitarian Universalist, and more. Children and adults of all ages are welcome. There will be games for the children. Bring yourself, your family, your friends, a dish to share, and lawn chairs if you wish. We ask that you include a list of ingredients for your potluck item; no pork, please. Plates, utensils, water and lemonade will be provided. Optional: bring a non-perishable food item for donation to one of our local food pantries. Yes, we re all coming back from our summer vacations and preparing for the new school year. This school year, I hope you will encourage your children to come to Sunday School. We are starting up our new curriculum, Orange. This is an exciting change for Holy Cross! The middle school, and high school will be using a version of the program as well. We are looking forward to helping our youth experience Wonder, Discovery, and Passion with this new program. This month the Crafty Ladies will be getting ready for a great Holiday Bazaar. If you like to craft, sew or stitch, they are always looking for help and donations for sale. It s a new term for our Church Council. We are coming together to accomplish our current renovations, our patio project and church nursery. Also we are considering new projects updating the church campus, breezeway, roof, and the sanctuary. As we transition into fall, we will be busy and many hands always make the load lighter. It s hard to believe that summer has come to an end. Soon the leaves will be exchanging their garments of green for the multi colored vestments of autumn. The fall of the year is nature at its finest. The apply crisp smell in the air and the faith aroma of smoke from the chimney s reminds us all that fall is truly here. The season itself seems to draw us out of doors. For some of us it might be a football game or walking in the leaves and breathing in that great fresh air. For others it might be sharing words of summer remembrances with friends and family over a bowl of steaming soup or a cup of hot tea. For the children or the child in all of us, it might be gathering the prettiest leaves and pressing them between sheets of waxed paper to preserve their beauty throughout the winter months. How will you celebrate autumn this year? Why not take a walk in the sunshine and while you feel its gentle warmth, offer a simple prayer for your life and the lives of those around you. Remember most especially our congregation and the rich bounty of ministries and opportunities for discipleship that awaits our time and talents. Until next time, stay healthy!
