2 2 Pastor s Page-June 2018 The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. - Isaiah 58:11 When St. Francis was weeding his garden, he was approached by a young monk, who asked what St. Francis would do if he knew today was the last day on the earth. Without hesitation, St. Francis responded that he would continue to work on his garden. Even if this was his final earthly day, he would carry on his mission. How about you? If you knew this would be your last day, what would you do? Would you sell everything and throw the most luxurious party or stay at the most expensive resort? Would you spend the day calling and connecting with family and friends? What would you do if today were your last day? Speaking of last days, I want to say Good job! and Thank you! to all our teachers, students, parents, and helpers for a wonderful year of Sunday School classes and programs. I pray that your summer will be rejuvenating and restful. As for Minooka UMC, we will continue to carry out the mission to which God called us. In the coming months, we will send off our beloved ASP mission team for their week of service. They leave on June 9 th for their mission work. Let s lift them up in prayer. This summer s team members are: Trinity, Lexie, Hannah, Miriam, Mary, Erin, Kelli, Beth, Ethan, Colin, Chris, Daniel, Bill, Les, Steve & Marlin. Later this month, we will host our Vacation Bible School (June ) I ask for all of our MUMC members to participate (in one way or another). Let s support this ministry into the community. You can serve as a volunteer during VBS. You can offer monetary gifts or donate materials. You can spend time in prayer for our students, volunteers, and families. If you would like to join the prayer group or help in any other way, contact Patti Kelly. At the end of June, we will host our Annual Rummage Sale. Donations will be stored in the orange Sunday School room from now until Saturday, June 24. We re looking for volunteers to help collect, set up, price, and organize this event. Contact Gail Flatness. For all of you pet lovers, we re hosting our 3 rd Annual Pet Blessing on Saturday, July 10 AM. Location: Ridge Road. Invite your friends and neighbors and their furry companions to this event. We re also collecting pet treats. Contact Karen Gaba (co-lay Leader). Last but not least, we are having a special Charge Conference on Wednesday, June 13 th at 7 pm with District Superintendent Rev. Dick Wisdom. We ll discuss and make a decision about putting our current church building (205 W. Church St.) on the market. Since the appraisal is done and we have a potential buyer, we want to make sure that the value of our church building is accurate and relevant. All are invited to attend this special Charge Conference. However, only Administrative Board members will be able to vote to give approval for the Trustee Committee to put our building on the market. Again, I ask all of you for your prayers as we take these steps impacting the future direction of our church. I ll close with this thought live each day as if it were your last. Spend more time singing and laughing. Spend more time enjoying the blessings of life. Let go of grudges and guilt. Refuse to be dragged down by remorse and regrets. Perhaps this will be our last day on earth. Perhaps not. Since we do not know, let s embrace the gift of this day, every day. Pastor Sarah

Spring has arrived at the pantry. The Pantry news can report our shelves are full for awhile. Our number of families remain consistent, with the addition of two new ones. We received a donation from the University of Illinois Extension. They donated three boxes of seasoned rice packets with a sheet of recipes. We have enough to give each family a package for three months. Another donation we received were several boxes of Girl Scout cookies. The children and adults all were happy for this donation! Although our shelves look full, we do have some shortages. We do not have enough juice or drinks, spaghetti (not whole wheat), or ketchup. We will continue to serve our families at the level and quality they are accustomed to this month. However, summer is approaching so the kids will soon be home. Without school meal support, we should be prepared to service a few more families. Memorial Day is approaching. The weather has finally begun changing for the better. It is time to begin enjoying our summer activities. Enjoy your Memorial Day, but let us not forget the real reason for the day. Say a prayer and thank our veterans! As always "Thank You" for your support. Jean Jun and Virginia Guertin tchdf86@aol.com Self-Control Saturday s 5:00 p.m. Blended Service Sunday s 9:00 a.m. Traditional Service Sunday s 10:30 a.m. Communion every Sunday Contemporary Service The temptation to take shortcuts, to pull a power play and bend to the world s methods Just this once, can gain a foothold in our motives under pressure. When this temptation arises, it can take all the self-control we can muster to keep our hearts fixed on Jesus. Paul reminds us that the source of humble, God-honoring self-control is the Spirit. It is this type of Spirit-empowered self-control that Jesus demonstrated throughout His life, especially as pressure mounted against Him. Where do we need the Spirit to enable us to demonstrate Jesus-like self-control? But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:22-24) Holy Spirit, we need Your life-transforming power to shape our responses to pressure and temptation. In Christ, Pearl Lindley, Certified Lay Servant

6 6 GPS Update GPS had a great year this year. We had many lessons that coincided with Pastor Sarah s sermons giving our GPS families touchpoints to speak on after Church on a Sunday morning. These lessons included Science which the children really enjoyed and still remember now. Below are some of the pictures from Science activities throughout this last GPS year. Our Family Ministries team is anticipating another blessed year that will begin in September. Hero Central VBS June 18-22, 5:45-8 p.m. This is our most important ministry of the year. We anticipate approximately 100 children to join us during this VBS week. It takes many volunteers to pull off this exciting week with our communities children. Please make sure your children are signed up online so they don t miss out! And please prayerfully consider volunteering your time. We promise you won t leave the week without being changed for the better...and with that change you will also touch a family in the name of Jesus Christ. It just doesn t get any better than that! In Christ, Patti Kelly Family Ministries Co-Director
