1 Glenelg Catholic Parish 10th June 2018 TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Growing Old Gracefully Deacon Pat Edwards Someone said to me recently, Growing old is not for sissies! Whilst it was intended as a humorous remark, for those in the winter of our lives, it rings very true. I am coming to realise this only too well and as many of my friends move into their 70s and 80s, I recognise that it holds true for most of us oldies. In fact, the primary topic of conversation when we do catch up, is exchanging the latest details on our health issues. And it is not only personal health; as our bodies slow down, we are frustrated at our inability to do what we could do ten or twenty years ago. It reminds us that we are very vulnerable and raises serious and anxious questions about the future. Recently, two friends, husband and wife lost their respective driver s licenses within months of each other and now the independence of their living has been seriously compromised. Daily living has become so much more difficult. No longer are they able socialise as freely as they once could. This can result in profound loneliness, cut off from social activities they had enjoyed. No wonder that statistics reveal many older people suffering from depression and anxiety. This is where Sr. Pat s St Dominic s Centre plays such an important role in our parish life by providing wonderful opportunities for seniors to socialise in many varied ways. In today s second reading, St Paul is clearly very aware of the ravages of old age. He tells his community in Corinth of the need to remind themselves that whilst their bodies are deteriorating, their inner being is growing ever stronger. That spiritual life, life in God s Spirit which they have nurtured throughout their lives is now reaching fullness. Yes, the body is failing and whilst it is not possible to ignore that, we need to also focus on the reality that our inner being continues to grow ever stronger, and it is that which will take us to the glory of eternal life. Direct your thoughts to that which is unseen, counsels St Paul, for it is that which is eternal. That which we can see, is transitory; it will fade away. St Paul is right. If we focus only on the ravages of ageing, our thoughts will lead us to sadness. He is not saying to ignore them; that would not be possible. But balance your thinking by allowing your thoughts to continually remind us that our faith lives, our lifetime of living as disciples of Christ has brought about a robust inner being which will continue to grow still stronger. After all, that is why we were created we came from God to be a mirror of the God in whose image each of us was created and we return to him where the deepest desires of our heart will be satisfied.

If there is sufficient interest, we could endeavour to present a series during October this year. INVITATION TO COMMUNITY CONCERN EVENT hosted by Glenelg Catholic Women s League in support of OzHarvest SA on Friday 15 th June, 10 a.m. at St Mary s Hall corner of High & Chapel St, Glenelg. Guest speaker from OzHarvest SA - a food rescue charity, collecting quality surplus food, and distributing it to people in need. There will be morning tea and trading table. All proceeds go to Vinnies Women s Shelter. ALPHA As this year s Alpha program comes to an end on June 20th, we ask for your continued prayers for guests and the Alpha team alike. Our Holy Spirit Day will be held on June 16 th. Can you please pray for the success of the day and for future Alpha programs. A copy of the pastoral letter from Bishop Gregory O Kelly SJ to the people of the Archdiocese of Adelaide read out at Masses this weekend has been placed on the church notice board and is available on our website. 7 Special Collection This Weekend Catholic Mission Church Appeal. This year we are invited to help to heal a nation through education in Myanmar. Appeal envelopes will also be available next week or you can contribute online at catholicmission.org.au/myanmar PLYMPTON PARISH LUNCHEON Sunday 24 June 2018 Stables Ballroom at the Junction 470 Anzac Hwy, Camden Park. Tickets are $35pp. Guest speaker will be Drew Bynoe who will give us an insight in to the Charity Cops for Kids and how it all started. The raffle proceeds will go to the Charity and there is some great prizes to be won. We will also have a Quiz Sheet which everyone enjoys as well as the chance to win one of the many prizes. Donations for prizes would be very much appreciated and may be left at the parish office. Tickets are also available from the Plympton parish office on Parish Finance Council Meeting Tuesday 12th June, 4.15pm Liturgy Roster 17th June 2018 Plenary Council 2020 Pope Francis has approved the Australian Bishops decision to hold a Plenary Council in Australia in 2020 and It is a significant moment for the Church in Australia to make decisions about the future. The first of 2 national gatherings will be held in Adelaide in October To prepare the agenda for the Plenary Council, all of God s people are invited to reflect on the question: What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time? 8 LITURGY YEAR B TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today s Gospel offers us an image of Jesus as the good burglar who breaks into Satan s stronghold to rescue all held captive in sin and shame. Freed, forgiven, made new by God s spirit, we became brothers and sisters of Jesus. 1st Reading: Genesis 3:9-15 I will make you enemies of each other: your offspring and her offspring. Psalm: 129 With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. 2nd Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 We believe, and therefore we speak. Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia!
