FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LOVING GOD, SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS Phone: When Jesus turned and saw them following him, he said to them, What are you looking for? They said, to him, Rabbi (which translated means teacher), where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see. John 1:38-39 Come and See? The first words of our Lord in The Gospel According to John are: What are you looking for? The gospel begins of course with the beautiful prologue regarding the word made flesh and dwelling among us, and then we are introduced to John the Baptist as he begins to direct attention to the one who is coming after me. John then points the one out to two of his disciples saying, Look, here is the Lamb of God! The two immediately follow Jesus. It isn t long and Jesus realizes he is being followed, so he stops, turns and asks What are you looking for? Isn t it wonderful? Jesus shows interest in them from the very beginning. He turns to face them. His eyes meet theirs. He asks a question. He is interested in what is on their hearts and minds; ready to engage and listen. They had the full attention of the Lamb of God! He wants to know what they are looking for. What is it we are looking for in our lives? It does not matter if we have just started to follow and have yet to ask anything of him, or if we have followed for as long as we can remember. He wants to know. What would you say knowing he asks with loving kindness, so you can speak freely to the one filled with grace? How blessed are we that he asks us? Life is such a wonderful gift meant to be received, opened, cherished, and lived after the example he sets for us. Our Lord loves to help and will affirm the holy desires we seek. The disciples request is simple. They want to know where he is staying. Jesus second words were short and sweet; a beautiful invitation, Come and see. They spend the day with him. By the end of the day, apparently they had found in him what they were looking for and then wanted to share that with others. Andrew went and found his brother Peter and told him what he had been looking for and found in Jesus. He brought Peter to Jesus. The other disciple, Philip, went and found a friend and invited him to come and see what he too had found in Jesus. Jesus asks everyone what they are looking for. Everyone is looking for something. What are you looking for? What have you found? What have you found in Jesus Christ? What have you found in him that you would like others to know they may find in him as well? What have you found in Christ s church here at Faith? What would you tell others you have found? What would you invite them to come and see in him and his church? We found Christ here, among and within so many of you, when we arrived three years ago. We give thanks that you share what you continue to find in him and with him. We pray that as we leave to go and share Christ s love, in new communities, your prayers go with us as ours remain with you. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all now and forever. Pastor Jeff, Carol, Lauryn & Mulder June 2017

Confirmation Sunday- June 4 Confirmation is a time of intentional faith formation. For 18 weeks participants are exposed to common Christian beliefs and practices as well as ones unique to the United Methodist tradition. The intent is to lead the participants, in response to God s grace, to make a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as well as commit to faithful service through His body, the Church. This year s class (with mentors) is Ryan Dietrich (Ryan Depinet), Maximus Fortney (John Covert), Carson Mellott (Paul Fortney), Nico Vittorio (Charlene Thomas), Haley Welter (Kedullin Fortney), and Bradley Willman (Eric Depinet). They will be confirmed, during the worship service on Pentecost Sunday June 4. Please note we will have one combined worship service on this day, at 10:15, due to the special nature of receiving this group of confirmands. This is a special time in their life and the life of the church. There will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall, after the service. Congratulations to Paul Fortney & Charlene Thomas who were continued as licensed local pastors Congratulations to Amy Vittorio who was certified as a candidate for ministry by our Fireland s District Hello from David Dietrich, I was born right here in Tiffin on May 14, I was raised by my parents, Chip and Jane, and I went to Mohawk throughout elementary school, junior high, and high school. During these years, I learned the importance of a positive attitude and a good work ethic. Having these attributes helped me attain nearly all of my goals, which I could not have achieved without the help of some very special people. My parents have always been there for me, teaching me the right way to do things; Miss Sandy has taught me the importance of standing up for what you believe in and not being afraid to voice it; all of my coaches have been very helpful, getting me through tough times and helping me improve every single day. Upon graduation, I plan to attend Bowling Green University to major in Sports Management. I plan to minor in business, and my goal is to graduate in three years. I can try to do this because I have accumulated college credits in high school. My church family can continue to help me by praying, and by helping my younger brothers the way you have helped me. I greatly appreciated the support from my church family, and I am thankful for the continued support. Graduate Recognition On Sunday June 18, we will recognize David s graduation during worship. Immediately following the services a reception will be held in the Narthex.
Peace with Justice Sunday is June 11, 2017 YOUR GIFT ENCOURAGES PEACE When Sara Altman, a college student from Gulfport, Miss., joined 18 of her U.S. peers in a pilgrimage to South Korea in 2015, the first thing she noticed was the prevalence of coffee houses. That made her happy. Soon, however, she saw the sadness hidden in her host city of Seoul. I could almost forget the uneasy separation, enduring for seven decades, that has caused so much sorrow on this peninsula, Altman admitted. That sorrow, she said, was not so buried in Cheorwon, a village bordering the demilitarized zone. The eerie quiet hinted at a race of people torn apart. As I cried, I struggled with the words of our friend Peter, the founder of the Boarder Peace School: Peacemaking is a happy business. According to the Rev. Bruce Case, Mississippi Conference peace with justice coordinator, the pilgrimage encourages participants to consider global issues in the context of faith and church. We asked them to study the history, culture and faiths of another country (and) the role of the United States in their history, he said, and to make parallels and connections of justice and peace within our own place and time. Korea has been divided for more than 65 years. Korean Christians stress the urgency of reunification, noting that the division has separated families and people who share a common language, culture and history. Altman and the other young adults discovered the rich 130 year history of the U.S. Methodist missionaries in Korea as they worshipped with Methodists in Seoul and heard faith stories of many Koreans young and old. YOUR GIFT MATTERS ===================================================================================== CAMP We have 8 youth already signed up for camp. It s not too late if you still want to sign up. There are things available with all kinds of camps. If you need information contact Jane Schubert at CAMP FUND You can still donate to the camp fund if you would like. The church council voted to pay $250 toward each campers fee. As I mentioned we have 8 youth already signed up. That s $2000 at this point. It is money that is well invested in our future. Thanks for your help. You can donate by putting in an envelope and mark it camp fund and place in the offering plate. Thanks again, Jane Schubert
Pentecost In the Christian liturgical year, Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Christ. Pentecost is celebrated seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday. Pentecost comes from the Greek word for fiftieth, pentekoste. It is the day we celebrate the unique outpouring of the Holy Spirit. According to Luke-Acts, after Jesus Ascension the Holy Spirit soon descended upon his followers. This is a day often associated with the birth of the church; the formation of the Christian community, and the beginning of the spread of the Christian movement. Red paraments, white doves, and yellow flames are popular colors and symbols for the day, that remind us of the Spirit appearing among the disciples and resting on each of them as described in Acts. Sometimes ministers & choirs wear red vestments, and at times, the custom has extended to the congregation wearing red clothing in celebration. Red banners are often hung from walls or ceilings to symbolize the free movement of the Spirit. It was what had been promised from the announcement of John the Baptist- I baptize you with water, but the One who comes will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. How about as a congregation we celebrate these special days by dressing in white as much as possible on Ascension Sunday and white, red or yellow (or combinations of) on Pentecost? Ascension Sunday this year is May 28. Pentecost Sunday is June 4. Season after Pentecost The kingdom of heaven is like Observing the Christian year, and following the church calendar, is intended to help us stay focused on, and experience anew each year, the sacred stories of our faith as we live our life. Throughout the Christian year we celebrate the central mysteries of our faith through seasons that place an emphasis on important themes such as: waiting for the Messiah, his birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ and gift of the Holy Spirit. After Pentecost the season is often referred to as Ordinary Time or Kingdomtide. The season begins the day after Pentecost and ends on the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent. The season is far from being plain, ordinary, common or the usual. At least it is not intended to be. The season is not as Christ-centered in theme in the same sense as the beginning of the year observed in Advent-Christmas-Epiphany or later in the Lent-Easter-Pentecost seasons. And even though the season s theme is less focused, the gospel lessons in the lectionary cover Jesus teaching ministry and tend to center on the theme of the kingdom and reign of God. Other lectionary readings come from the Acts of the Apostles, and readings from the Epistles (letters) often focus on the work of the Holy Spirit and early church community. So, the focus this time of year, after Pentecost, is often on the work of the Holy Spirit through those who are called as followers of Jesus Christ and the Body of Christ called the Church. Children s Sunday School will be taking a break starting May 28 th and will resume September 10 th. In the Pastors office after 1st and 2nd service June 11th The 2017 Community Vacation Bible School will be held Monday Friday July from 9am till noon at First Christian Church, 2016 S. CR 19 Classes will be held for preschoolers through fifth grade. Registration is at 8:45am on Monday July 10
Christ s Church: Is composed of people just like me. Will be friendly if I am friendly. Will do great things if I do great things. Will make generous gifts to many causes if I am generous. Will bring others into the fellowship if I bring them. Will make disciples if I am being discipled. Seats will be filled if I fill them. Will be a church of loyalty and love, of faith, witness and service, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these. Is a covenant community, not a voluntary association. Therefore I commit myself to the task of being all these things and more, with the help of Christ, June 18th In honor and appreciation of Rev. Jeff and Carol, the SPRC is sponsoring a card box this month. Please take a moment to write a note or find a card to encourage the Lanzers on their next journey and place it in the box in the narthex, beginning June 1 st. We will also host a reception in the Fellowship Hall after the June 25 th 10:15 service. It will be your chance to personally express your thanks to Rev. Jeff and Carol. ===================================================================================== 5/14/17 we welcomed Aidan Nicholas Foy into our covenant community, through the sacrament of baptism. Our June mission project will be to support The Morrison House. The Community Task Force and New Housing Ohio opened the doors of the Morrison House, a transitional home for the homeless in Seneca county in A typical stay for a resident is days, depending on each residents situation. This program helps families who need shelter from the storms of life. The program includes shelter, meals and support services for homeless families. It allows the residents time to work through their individual issues that have caused them to be homeless. The staff works with residents to provide immediate stability. A case manager works with them to develop a plan of hope and recovery from homelessness. Together we can affect change to help those who are struggling with the challenges of life, giving them a brighter future.
