1 NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday jx j ÄÄ Ux t UtÇw Éy ]ÉçyâÄ ` áá ÉÇtÜç W áv ÑÄxá AAA Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: Teach us to Pray Preaching Series We continue our preaching series for the Month of May Teach us to Pray. In week one, we learned that prayer is conversation with God, spending time with God. Jesus renews and strengthens us during our prayer time. Make prayer a priority in your calendar. Last week, we focused on intercession. We regularly present our needs and the needs of others before God. The Blessed Mother and the saints join with us in prayer. Jesus takes all our needs and presents them to God the Father. The following summary notes are designed to aid in following the homily and provide some references for further study. Week Three Pentecost: Prayer and the Holy Spirit With Pentecost, we see that the Holy Spirit can completely transform our prayer lives. The Spirit helps form us in the life of prayer, is constantly with us and we should call upon the Holy Spirit throughout the day and ask for the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit to be renewed in us. (1) Who is the Holy Spirit? We have clearer images of God the Father and Jesus His Son, our brother. The Holy Spirit is sometimes the forgotten person of the Trinity. St. Thomas and St. Augustine remind us that the love between the Father and the Son brings forth or spirates the Holy Spirit. We have received the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation. "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." (Rom 5:5) In today s Gospel, we read: the spirit of truth will guide you to all truth. (John 16:13) The term "Spirit" translates the Hebrew word ruah, which means breath, air, wind. (CCC 691). You can t see the wind but you see how it moves the swaying branches of a tree or ripples across crops in a field. So, too, with the Holy Spirit. We know him in the movement by which he reveals the Word to us. (CCC 687) The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) shows us how the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was (Continued on page 7) But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. Jn 16:13 Teach us to Pray Pentecost: Prayer and the Holy Spirit 2100 W. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us!!! Most Holy Virgin, certain of your intercession, we pray that the mysteries of the Risen Christ and of the Holy Spirit may enlighten many to become willing and generous servants of the church. We pray for our youth to whom the Lord addresses a special invitation of closer fellowship. May they refuse to be carried away by the things of this world and open their hearts, instead, to the friendly voice that calls them. May they feel capable of making a lifelong commitment to Christ and to His church for the salvation of mankind. May they trust that divine grace will endow them with the power to make a total offering of themselves as they feel the attraction of priestly, religious and missionary life. We pray for Christian families, that they may provide a favorable atmosphere for their youngsters and help them make the right choices. We beseech you, that all priests and religious be an example to our youth by their availability and humble readiness to accept the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May they be able to extend to all the fruits of love and peace. Amen. 7 Thoughts from Monsignor McClory (Continued from cover page) preceded by prayer: On the day of Pentecost, the Spirit of the Promise was poured out on the disciples, gathered together in one place. While awaiting the Spirit, all these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer. (Acts 2:1; 1:14), The Spirit who teaches the Church and recalls for her everything that Jesus said was also to form her in the life of prayer. (CCC 2623) (2) What is the role of the Holy Spirit in our prayer? There are so many images of the Holy Spirit. This leads to a variety of ways to understand the role of the Holy Spirit. Today we focus on one specific role: How the Holy Spirit is part of our prayer. We pray to the Holy Spirit and we ask the Holy Spirit to help us pray. The Holy Spirit helps us to pray and prays for us, advocates for us. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with sighs too deep for words." Rom 8:26. The Holy Spirit, the artisan of God's works, is the master of prayer. (CCC 741) The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states: in order to pray, one must have the will to pray. Nor is it enough to know what the Scriptures reveal about prayer: one must also learn how to pray. Through a living transmission (Sacred Tradition) within the believing and praying Church, The Holy Spirit teaches the children of God how to pray. (CCC 2650) (3) What is our response? How can we activate the Holy Spirit more vibrantly in our prayer life? We should ask for a greater outpouring or release of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We should pray throughout the day to the Holy Spirit in events big and small. In today s second reading, we hear: To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. (1 Cor. 12:7) Elsewhere, St. Paul states: "Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication." Eph 6:18 The Catechism gives us some key insights into the role of the Holy Spirit in our prayer: call upon the Holy Spirit every day, especially at the beginning and the end of every important action (CCC 2670) It is right and good to pray so that the coming of the kingdom of justice and peace may influence the march of history, but it is just as important to bring the help of prayer into humble, everyday situations. (CCC 2660) We learn to pray at certain moments but his Spirit is offered us at all times, in the events of each day, to make prayer spring up from us. (CCC 2659) A very simple way to pray at all times is to regularly invoke the Holy Spirit throughout the day. It can be as simple as the prayer Come, Holy Spirit or perhaps a more extended time of prayer. When you are getting ready to answer a phone call or meet with someone or go to an event just take the time to ask the Holy Spirit to give you what you need to respond to that situation. You can do this silently in the quiet of your own heart in real time as the situation is unfolding. For example, someone might come to you and you begin to sense that they really need guidance and input. Rather than just giving your quick opinion, pray interiorly to the Holy Spirit to be guided as to what to say or whether you should say nothing at all and just listen. The Pentecost Sequence that we sing today expresses these sentiments in a beautiful prayer, one that we can recite again and again: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Prayer Companion Ministry starting this Sunday! I am very excited to announce a new ministry at our parish. On Sunday, May 20, following the 9:00 AM Mass, our parish will begin a new ministry called the Prayer Companion Ministry. In some respects, this is a re launch of something Fr. Prus supported years ago at Shrine: after the 9:00 AM Masses, we will offer the opportunity to have fellow parishioners pray with you for your specific needs. Prayer companions are parishioners with the charisms to pray with those in need of consolation and prayer. They will minister in teams to listen to and pray with whatever is on your heart. Prayer is a powerful tool in helping us grow in our relationship with God. It is also a support within our community when we are struggling and need to reach out to others for intercession on our behalf. Prayer is healing. Prayer gives hope. Prayer brings the Holy Spirit into the spaces of our lives where we most need God, opening our hearts and allowing His grace to fill us. We invite all those who desire to be prayed with to join members of the Prayer Companion Ministry in the St. Therese Chapel following the 9:00 AM Mass each week and allow God s Mercy and Love to permeate your life. In Jesus, Msgr. Bob McClory PastorRector May 20,

15 South Oakland Vicariate Council of Catholic Women Marge Caram at Love God. Love Others. Serve Both To Our Nurses and Health Ministry Leaders: Thank You for Making a Difference Jesus, you are the Healer who calls all nurses to serve and to care for people in your name. As we carry out this holy ministry, be with us, bless us with the wisdom of your Holy Spirit and fill us with the compassion that allows us to put the needs of those we serve before all else. In the midst of this highly technological and often impersonal age, let us not forget that nursing is fundamentally about being with people in need. It is about touch a listening presence a willing and compassionate heart that sees beyond symptoms and signs of illness to a person in need and to their community of concern. Help us to embrace the charism that is nursing to make it our own and, in so doing, to bring your healing presence into the lives of people in need. In Your holy name we pray. Amen Lending Library As we celebrate Pentecost, we hear about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. What are these gifts and how do they impact our lives? Do they matter at all? You won't find the theological definition of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, piety and fear of the Lord in a standard dictionary. Would you like to reflect on the meaning and purpose of these gifts and learn to pray for and cultivate them? You can find the answer to these questions in Mitch Finley's bookthe 7 GIFTS of the HOLY SPIRIT. As a bonus, the last chapter gives a summary of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Regular library hours are Sundays 10 am to 2 pm and Fridays 9:15 am to noon, in the Conference Center, Room C (across from the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at or Yvonne Lesiak at The lending Library will be closed on memorial day weekend, May 25 May 27. Please come and browse when we reopen on June 3. May 20,

16 Thank You For Your Generous Stewardship Sacred Heart Major Seminary Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will ordain three men to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament this Saturday, May 19. Deacons Mark Livingston and Christopher Muer prepared to become our shepherds at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, which is the archdiocese s college and graduate seminary. Deacon John Maksym prepared at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Boston. Your CSA gifts support our seminarians in formation as well as the permanent diaconate program. Sacred Heart s student body als includes lay women and men earning graduate and undergraduate degrees and diplomas in religious studies at the seminary to serve in parish ministry throughout the archdiocese. To make a gift to the Catholic Services Appeal or for more information about CSAfunded programs, go to or call Martin Alves, Shrine Director of Development at x1455. SHRINE 2018 CSA UPDATE CSA Parish Target Goal: $268, CSA 2018 Pledge Total: $162, Percentage of Goal Attained: 60% Number of Participants: 503 Participation Goal: 1,000 (50%) Average Gift Amount: $ Cash Collected/Payments: $101, (61%) New Contributors: 48 CSA Donations via Credit Card or Electronic Fund Transfer Some Shrine parishioners have requested that their CSA donation be deducted via their credit card or through their bank as an electronic fund transfer. In past years, the archdiocese has forwarded paperwork to the parishioner s home to request completion and submission of the pertinent data needed for the transaction. This year the AOD has changed its process and will no longer mail enrollment forms that allow you to set up your CSA account via credit card or electronic fund transfer. Instead, the AOD asks that you either make your payment online at shrine.aodcsa.org or call between 10 am and 5 pm MondayFriday. The Shrine Development Department will make note of this new process in their letter of appreciation to donors but, in case anyone wishes to proactively contact the AOD, you are encouraged to do so by way of the information above. We apologize for any inconvenience and encourage you to call the Development Department at x1420 if you have questions. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO CONSIDER YOUR 2018 CSA COMMITMENT As the 2018 theme of the CSA campaign Opening Doors to Grow With Christ, suggests, Jesus encourages us to examine our lives and reflect about how each of us may enter into a deeper personal relationship with Him and how we can open doors so that others may also have a personal encounter with Him. When we support the CSA, we support a multitude of ministries, programs and services that involve us in our local Church. We renew our personal commitment to Christ and His disciples and act in the spirit of Christian stewardship and evangelization. Many thanks to those who have participated in this important appeal in the past. The parish goal for 2018 is $268,777. As Christian stewards and people of faith, we are called to accept God s gifts gratefully, nurture them wisely, share them in charity, and give back to God a portion of what we have in time, talent and treasure to support the Kingdom of God on earth. We urge you to consider as generous a donation as possible in support of the mission of Christ s Church in the spirit of stewardship and evangelization. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the CSA or for more information about CSArelated funded programs, go to or call Martin Alves, Shrine Director of Development at x1455. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to this important diocesan ministry. 16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica

Currently, we offer these classes on Wednesdays and Fridays. In the fall, we will be offering these classes with a different time schedule. The new schedule will be either a Tuesday or Thursday class from 8:30 10:00 am. You may choose to sign up for one day a week or two, whichever works best for your schedule. If you would like to come observe a class between now and the end of the year to see if this is something that would work for you and your twoyear old, please call our school office at Here are some of the parent s comments that currently are enrolled in these classes: Best decision I ve made was to join the parent /tot program. My daughter loves it and is so excited to see her teacher and her friends every week. Highly recommended as a start for any little one. ~ Christy Brocavich Mom and Tot has been a wonderful blend of faith, family, and education. The program provides routine for the kids, while allowing for the kids to grow as individuals. We look forward to every class! ~ Jennifer Dillon I am thrilled to have found Shrine's Parent/Tot program. It's the only one like it in the area and it is the perfect transition for my toddler. She loves going to school and gets the interaction with other children to prepare her for preschool. I also love having the one opportunity to participate in a program like this with my child before she's off on her own being a part of her introduction to learning is something I'll forever cherish. ~ Amanda Stier 18 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica
