1 NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion jx j ÄÄ Ux t UtÇw Éy ]ÉçyâÄ ` áá ÉÇtÜç W áv ÑÄxá AAA Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: Are you having a good Lent? It s not too late On Ash Wednesday, I shared that I hoped to have a really good Lent. Some years I have had excellent Lents and others less so. That prompted a few questions from parishioners about what it means to have a good Lent. What does that look like? In my own life, I can look back to the Lent of 1994 as an example of a really good Lent. I approached that Lent with a very clear focus: to allow the Lord to use Lent to give me clarity about whether or not I should become a priest. At the time, I was an active young adult at Shrine as a parishioner, helping to lead a young adult group and involved in other activities. I had graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1991 and had been practicing law for about three years at a firm in Detroit. I was living in my hometown of Royal Oak. The spiritual discipline of Lent was the best focus for deepening my relationship with Jesus and listening to His voice. I quieted down a few things by fasting and a renewed focus on prayer. Through this time, I opened my heart to try to discern. As Lent came to an end, I realized that I thought God was calling me to be a priest, but I knew I was called to enter the seminary. That Lent was transformative since it gave me a clear direction as to the next steps in my life. I realized I did not have to settle the question of whether I was definitively called to the priesthood (ultimately that is also the decision of the bishop, not just the candidate). I was given what I needed at that time: clarity about what to do next. Of course, upon entering the seminary, the Holy Spirit confirmed that discernment and I am so very blessed to be a priest. Lent of 1994 propelled me into the seminary and culminated in the first time I offered Mass as a priest: right here at Shrine on May 23, That I am now the pastor here is a tremendous blessing for me and the fulfillment of so many streams of the Holy Spirit working in my life. The Shrine Vocations Committee invites you to show your appreciation for the priests in our parish for all they do in supporting our faith community by sending them a kind note, a card, or a letter of thanks to arrive on Holy Thursday. Please, no gifts. As we all know, the demands on the clergy are always increasing and their numbers are decreasing. We encourage you to affirm their hard work and dedication with a simple thank you. We wish you a blessed and joyous Easter, and we ask you to continue to pray for religious vocations. Please let our priests know you care. Wait here and stay awake with Me.'..He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, 'So you had not the strength to stay awake with Me for one hour?'" Life Matters During this upcoming Holy Week, it is most appropriate to spend some time contemplating Christ s suffering for us; why we are called to, at times, suffer and how this speaks specifically to the Church s teaching on euthanasia and assisted suicide. The answer to the question of the meaning of suffering has been given by God to man in the Cross of Jesus Christ. Suffering, a consequence of original sin, takes on a new meaning; it becomes a sharing in the saving work of Jesus Christ. Through his suffering on the Cross, Christ has prevailed over evil and enables us, too, to overcome it. Our sufferings become meaningful and precious when united with his. As God and man, Christ has taken upon himself the sufferings of humanity, and in him human suffering itself takes on a redemptive meaning. In this union between the human and the divine, suffering brings forth good and overcomes evil Faith teaches us to seek the ultimate meaning of suffering in Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection. (Pope John II, Tenth World Day of the Sick, February 11, 2002) If God gives you an abundant harvest of trials, it is a sign of great holiness which He desires you to attain. Do you want to become a great saint? Ask God to send you many sufferings. The flame of Divine Love never rises higher than when fed with the wood of the Cross, which the infinite charity of the Savior used to finish His sacrifice. All the pleasures of the world are nothing compared with the sweetness found in the gall and vinegar offered to Jesus Christ. That is, hard and painful things endured for Jesus Christ and with Jesus Christ. (St. Ignatius of Loyola) United with our Lady of Sorrows, let us pray this week for all those that suffer; that they may be lifted from despair and come to know in faith the redemptive meaning of their suffering. 7 Thoughts from Monsignor McClory (Continued from cover page) What is a good Lent? One in which we use prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to be transformed into the disciples Jesus wants us to be. Is it too late to have a good Lent? No. We are in the season of NCAA Basketball March Madness. While most people fill out brackets at the round of 64, there are some who miss that deadline. I have a friend who always sends me an to enter a March Madness pool at the Sweet Sixteen round. It s not exactly the same since you miss out on some of the excitement of the first rounds, but you can still get the second half correct and claim a prize at the end. We are now entering Holy Week and we can recommit ourselves to use this week as an intense period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. If you need a reboot in your Lent, start right now. Holy Week is a treasured time of the year: we remember and re present some of the most sacred moments in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Recommit yourself now and have an amazing Holy Week. Check our bulletin for time and schedule details. And, in case you were wondering: my bracket (filled out at the beginning of the tourney) has Michigan over Villanova in the finals. See you in church! In Jesus, Msgr. Bob McClory PastorRector Mission Talks Available Online! The Lord is My Light and My Salvation Parish Mission Talks by Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM, are Online! Looking back on the days that have gone by in Lent, we are grateful for those who pray and keep vigil in support for life in all its stages. Mary s Mantle continues to offer safe harbor for mothers and their unborn children. Fr. Kevin celebrated Mass at Mary s Mantle and expressed gratitude for their faith in action. At the present time, there are three mothers living in the home. One of the three mothers is due in early spring. Another mom has been at the home for a little while with her baby who is a few months old. On the day of our visit, an expectant mother was welcomed into the home. If you are looking for opportunities to volunteer, Mary s Mantle is always in need of help. Two suggestions were made for those who wish to volunteer: Volunteers from area churches prepare a dinner and share their meal and faith with the residents and staff. This is a great opportunity to Unleash the Gospel. Spring will be here soon and along with the long awaited flowers come the weeds. Volunteers take care of the yard and would appreciate help with weeding. Blessings, Paula Dixon Attention Shrine Group and Ministry Leaders To further the Communication Team s goal to provide more effective communication by way of the Strategic Plan, all Shrine groups and ministries are asked to provide descriptive and contact information. 15 Bring Christ to the Family Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Home Home Enthronement is a Mission to Establish the Social Reign of the Sacred Heart in Society Through the Family. It is Based on Our Lord's Statement to St. Margaret Mary: "I will reign through My Heart." The pilgrim virgin is a statue of Mary, Our Lady of Fatima, which, every two weeks, is transferred to a different family s home. The family gives the statue a place in their home for two weeks, setting aside one hour a day to pray before it. It is an organized campaign to restore Christ to the family and the family to Christ. It is the answer to the question: "What can we do to save the family?" To schedule your Home Enthronement, call or text Teresa Rostron at the Legion of Mary, O CLOCK DAILY Friday, March 30 Saturday, April 7 ST. 20 NEEDED: Handmade Baby Blankets and Yarn Encourage pregnant women to choose life rather than abortion by knitting or crocheting blankets that are needed at the Mother and Unborn Baby Care Problem Pregnancy Center, a nonprofit organization located in Southfield, Michigan. The organization has been saving babies from abortion for over 30 years, on average saving 8 10 babies per month. MAUBC practices according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. All of our services are free including options counseling, pregnancy testing and ultrasound if needed. Once the pregnant woman chooses life for her unborn baby, she receives her baby s first gift, a handmade blanket. The baby growing within her often becomes more real with this simple act of kindness. To become involved in this ministry, please contact Julianna Mannino at Blankets are crocheted or knitted in pastel colors 36 x 36 inches in size. Also, donations of yarn in white or pastel colors are greatly appreciated. Thank you for any help that you can give to this important and lifesaving ministry. Shrine Catholic High School National Honor Society Hosts Shoe Drive with Funds2Org February 14 April 13 For every pound of shoes collected, Funds2Org will reimburse Shrine with 4 cents, for an approximate total of $1,000 if all 100 bags are filled. With spring just around the corner, now is the time to reassess the real need for all the shoes you have in your closet. Free up some spare room and donate to a worthy and socially encompassing cause for kids. Shrine Catholic High School and Academy is hosting a shoe drive with Funds2Org. Funds2Org is a forprofit social enterprise that raises money through shoe drives. The shoes are given to microentrepreneurs in developing countries to provide an economic opportunity through the reselling of gently worn shoes. The money raised by this fundraiser will go to Pencils of Promise, a separate organization that aims to help students in developing countries. They have already built 400+ schools in countries such as Ghana, Guatemala, and Laos, helping more than 74,000 students. The proceeds will go toward teacher support through training workshops, coaching sessions and literacy materials. Please help us achieve our goal of 100 bags filled with 25 pairs each by dropping off gently used shoes inside the main entrance of the school at 3500 West 13 Mile Road, Royal Oak. Unsure of what sort of shoes to send? A good rule of thumb: if you would give it to a friend, we can use those shoes!
