Jesus often gathered for worship with his disciples and others. Following his example, we gather now to grow in God and glorify his name. Welcome! Preacher/Liturgist: Rev. Peter Heckert Elder: Jeff Wetzel Organist: Randy Strakis Ushers: Sat. 6:00-Dick & Cathy Collison; Sun. 8:00-Russ Shoemaker, Les & Carol Ricks, Bob Klaiber; Sun. 10:30-Clark & Edith Grady, Katelyn VanderHoff, Jacob VanderHoff SERVING IN OUR WORSHIP THIS WEEK How precious is your steadfast love, O God! (Psalm 36:7). May each person who worships here sense your deep love for them. PLEASE PRAY FOR: David Ancil, Katherine Bickett, Kathy Bishop, Tommy Blake, John Brooks, Tom Burkhardt, Jean Carr, Larry Drummond, Brent Dunlap, John Fulton, Carol Gray, Cindy Howard, Adam Hubner, Diana Koger, Judy Marks, Scott Meyer, Walter Miller, Steve Neff, Kim Nelson, Bob Nixon, Kurt Ostrander, Dan Schroeder, Connie Talbott, Millie von Stein, & Ryan Woolard ALTAR FLOWERS If you would like to sponsor flowers to commemorate a special day in your life, please sign up today -- the flower chart is on the closet door in the church office (near Nola s desk), or just call or the office for the date(s) you want. We are currently seeking sponsors for January 27 and the February weekends. The cost of sponsorship is $30 and you can take the flowers home after services to enjoy! NURSERY Have a little one crying or needing a diaper changed? We want you to know that the nursery/cry room is always open for your use during worship services. There is a television in the room so that you won t miss out on anything happening in the sanctuary. The nursery/cry room is P204 (yellow classroom). FELLOWSHIP TIME Week of January 20, 2019 Greeters: Sat.-Patty Small; Sun. 8:00- Jeanie Truelsen; Sun. 10:30-Mary O Donnell Acolytes: Sun. 8:00-Caleb Hamelman, Noelle Moon, Clara Merchant, Griffin Prickel; Sun. 10:30-Isaiah Grady, Jackson Parker, Malia McClannen, Katherine Wilcox Everyone is invited to enjoy the fellowship and some light refreshments in the cafeteria immediately following the 8:00 a.m. Sunday service. To help with our Sunday morning fellowship at St. James, we encourage families to bring in breakfast food to share with our congregation. This will allow church and school families to give back to their

church family by sharing some tasty breakfast foods. Each week we will gather sponsor families to bring in food for the Sunday school hour. St. James has typically purchased 9 dozen donuts each Sunday for this time. So instead of St. James purchasing so many donuts, each family can sign up to bring in coffee cake, sweet rolls, fruit, bagels, etc. Please make sure to bring your donation to the cafeteria before the 8:00 a.m. service each week (food items may be dropped off in the cafeteria after school on Friday or during Saturday evening service). Please label the food items for Sunday morning fellowship. Questions/Answers: 1. Do the foods have to be homemade? No, you are welcome to bring in homemade food, but you are also welcome to bring in purchased food. 2. Can an organization within St. James sponsor a week? Yes, we are strongly encouraging organizations, classes, etc. to support a week. 3. What if we don t get a sponsor for a week? Then we will order extra donuts for that week. 4. Will coffee and juice continue to be provided during this time? Yes, the normal coffee and juice will continue to be provided by St. James. The sponsors are just providing the food. We are continuing the trial run of this donut hour supplement through February. Please sign up online at if you want to help keep this going. SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES (9:15-10:15 A.M.) LOST BOOKS? led by Pastor Heckert in the cafeteria (room P212). Ever wondered if some texts were intentionally excluded from the Bible and why? In Lost Books? the Men s NetWork looks at why some ancient writings failed to make the cut for inclusion, why other texts most definitely met the standard, and why others, including those gospels found in the last century, came up short. THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE CROSS led by Pastor French is not meeting this week. To take part in this study you will need to purchase the $15 book, The Spirituality of the Cross, written by Gene Veith. This book explains a Christian tradition that is rich, historic, and particularly relevant today. Yet hardly anyone outside of Lutheran circles and sometimes not even within them is aware of it. But in a time when Christianity has become confused with moralism, politics, and what Martin Luther called the spirituality of glory, the spirituality of the cross comes as a liberating, paradigmshifting alternative. Please call Pastor French (765) with any questions you may have. A DEEPER LOOK moderated by Grace Gillespie in room P202 (green classroom). This group discusses the Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited every Sunday, but will not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction. We pray for each other and care for each other. Join us today and every Sunday. SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:15-10:15 A.M.) Every week, we will meet in the sanctuary for the opening of Sunday school. The classes will then proceed to the following rooms: 2 Yr. Olds - Preschool: Yellow Classroom K - 2nd Grade (Lower Elementary): Orange Classroom 3rd - 5th Grade (Upper Elementary): Red Classroom 6th - 8th Grade: Church Office Conference Room High School: Church Office Work Room

What are the 2 year olds - 5th graders learning about? Starting with Genesis, we will work through the Bible in three years through major Bible stories from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and Acts. Students will learn and grow in faith alongside their peers as they explore the Bible, draw connections to the Small Catechism, and learn the traditions of the Lutheran Church. If you have questions about the Sunday school program, contact Rebecca Rowan at rowanrm@gmail.com or (423) What are the 6th - 8th graders learning about? Led by Bill & Karin Crum each week, the class will aid students in their preparation for confirmation. The class has allowed for incredible discussion and participation by all who attend. The students WILL be in Scripture and the Catechism at EVERY meeting. The program we are using can be found at WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES WOMEN S MONDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY led by Barbara Kirkpatrick 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the conference room (for a 9-week LifeLight study of Revelation). While the events of the present for the reader at times seem overwhelming, the visions experienced by the one who records the material go above and beyond the present and take into account all of history and show that God is in control of history. Please call Barbara Kirkpatrick at (765) for more information and to register. WOMEN S TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY led by Jan Harris 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the conference room (for the second 9-week LifeLight study of Luke). Blessings for the reader as you study Luke s carefully researched account of Jesus s life. Consider yourself on a journey with Luke to learn more about Jesus of Nazareth, whose body crucified for the forgiveness of our sins becomes the temple of the living God. Please call Jan Harris at (765) for more information and to register. COFFEE CLUB led by Pastor French on Thursdays 7:00-7:45 a.m. is not meeting this week. THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Heckert 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the conference room. We are (a bit belatedly) back in action! Join us every Thursday night as we resume our study of Genesis. Come for the discussion and strengthening of your faith, but stay for the off-topic jocularity and Hebrew vocabulary lessons! See you there! MEN S BIBLE BREAKFAST led by Doug Schroeder on Fridays 6:00-7:00 a.m. at the Downtowner Restaurant. You can come for coffee or breakfast at 6:00 a.m. or just for the Bible study on the Scripture lessons for the coming Sunday which begins about 6:25 a.m. TV & RADIO MINISTRIES ISSUES, ETC.: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show and podcast hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL. This week s topics include: Marijuana, Mental Illness and Violence, The Will of God, Vocation & Baptism, St. Timothy, and more. Dr. Anthony (Tony) Cook on January 20. As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, God rejoices over you. This week we explore our new name and identity as the bride of Christ (Isaiah 62:1-5). The Lutheran Hour is heard every week in our listening area at 7:00 a.m. on station 720 AM, at 7:30 a.m. on 97.3 FM, at 9:04 a.m. on FM, or at 10:00 a.m. on 97.3 FM. Have questions? Contact our LHM ambassador at St. James - Jerry Ripke at (765) or jerryripke@gmail.com. GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS 2018 GIVING STATEMENTS: Thank you for your support of God s work at St. James in The 2018 giving statements have already been ed to you if we have your personal address on file. Paper statements are available for all other contributors to pick up in the cafeteria anytime until January 27. If you have any questions concerning your statement, please contact Nola Hecht in the church office. As we look forward into 2019, St. James continues to be faced with financial challenges. We move forward in faith because we believe that God has already provided the resources among us to meet these challenges, and we pray for your continued support of the mission and ministry of St. James through a practice of regular offerings. MANY THANKS: Thank you to Keith Lah and Kitrick Knobloch for volunteering their time and manpower to shovel snow for St. James last Saturday, January 12. You are both such a blessing! HELP WANTED: St. James is seeking a snow blower operator - must be available to clear the sidewalks and steps of the church and school buildings before 7:00 a.m. on snow days (and some evenings when necessary). Please contact Daphine Prather at with questions. Employment applications are available in the church office. YOU RE MORE THAN A NUMBER AT ST. JAMES: Have you noticed that your offering envelope number changes sometimes? Don t worry, because that will happen from time to time. The most important thing is that your NAME is on any donations you give to the church or school. Are you currently not receiving quarterly offering envelopes, but wish to start? No problem! Just send me an at nhecht@stjameslaf.org to let me know. Also of note, I m ing the 2018 giving statements to as many people as possible this year to reduce printing and postage expenses. Does the church office have your current personal address on file? (Statements will not be sent to work addresses.) Please send me an to be SURE. Thank you! ~ Nola Hecht (Church Secretary)

HAND TOWELS AND DISHRAGS NEEDED: Do you have any old hand towels or dishrags you no longer want? We d love to have them! They make great dust rags. Donations will be gratefully accepted in the church office. SEWING CIRCLE: Due to expected bad weather, we will not be meeting on Monday, but please come and join us in February! We are looking forward to a new year of providing all the needed baby clothes for our local hospitals. When a grieving family is faced with such as loss, our local hospitals, nurses, doctors, etc. are so grateful to be able to offer a family a complete burial outfit which includes a blanket, booties, hat, certificate bag, etc. We complete these items in four different sizes. We are proud to say all supplies and money needed to do this are supplied by St. James members. We wish to take this time to thank all the members who continue to help our mission. We welcome anyone who is interested in helping (no need to know how to sew either by hand or machine). We can always use your help. There is always work to be done. For more information, call Dorothy Welther at (765) The Sewing Circle meets in the fellowship hall on the third Monday morning of the month from 8:30 until noon. We hope to see you on the 21st to have a nice time working together on such a wonderful mission. ECO SHRED DAY: Do you have financial documents or other personal papers you need destroyed? Eco Shred will be at St. James on Friday, January 25 from 9:00 a.m. until noon and will shred your paperwork right in front of you. Since school will be in session, the upper parking lot will be closed, so just use the alleyway and pull up to the Eco Shred truck parked next to the gymnasium. We are asking for a freewill donation from those using the service to cover the cost of the event. Limit: 5 boxes/person. NEW BIBLE STUDY COMING SOON: Paul s letter to the Ephesians is about the Church and about the fellowship of believers who make up the Church. It is about us, for by faith we are the Church in our time and place. By God s grace, we are His family a family united in Christ and sustained by the Holy Spirit. Join Pastor Heckert Sunday mornings in the cafeteria starting on January 27 as we delve into remarkable letter from Paul! VOTERS ASSEMBLY: The next meeting of the St. James Voters Assembly, the governing body for our congregation, will be held on Sunday, January 27 at 12:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. A light lunch will be served prior to the meeting. All communicant members of St. James at least 18 years of age and in good standing are eligible to become members of the Voters Assembly. If you would like to have your name submitted for membership, please contact the church office no later than Thursday, January 24. You must be present at the assembly in order to join. QUILTERS: Come join the Quilters on Monday, January 28 in the fellowship hall. We had a great 2018 and hope to make 2019 an even better year providing quilts for those in need, so that means we need more hands! You just need to know how to tie a knot or you can cut or sew or just cheer us on. Stop by anytime between 8:30 a.m. and noon. SUMMER CAMP: Where can your children experience Christian growth while riding horses, canoeing, swimming, and zip-lining? At Lakeview Ministries! Online registration for Camp Lakeview and Lakeview Villages will open on Friday, February 1 at 9:00 a.m. Don t let your children miss the adventure, joy, and wonder that a week at a Christian camp can bring. Thank you for making a difference! index.cfm?go=s.signup&urlid=10c094aa5af2aa7f49-basketball1&view=standard PORK FOR PARKERS UPDATE: Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 9 if you placed an order. Chris Northington will begin preparing your delicious meal around 8:00 a.m. at St. James and orders will be available for pickup later in the afternoon. We will let you know a definite time by then. If you are unable to pick your order up, we can make arrangements for it to be delivered. Chris could certainly use a few volunteers to help grill the ribs and prepare the side dishes. If you would like to volunteer to help Chris out by donating your time (2-3 hour shifts), please contact him at (765) If you have any other questions, comments, or concerns, please call Teresa Dukes-Flint at (765) or Mary Prill at (765) THE AUCTION IS COMING: The 10th annual St James Crusader Auction is happening on Saturday, April 13. You know you want to be there! Tickets are on sale NOW! See Mary Prill in the west lobby on Sunday mornings between the services and get your seat at the table today! NOW ACCEPTING: We need items for the 10th annual Crusader Auction! Please feel free to drop off items at the school office or the church office! Hit those sales and help us fill The Trails Banquet Facility with items for bid! Watch for our Amazon wish list coming soon if online shopping is more your speed! Of course, you can always visit the Scrip counter to buy gift cards! Help us reach the $1 million mark this year for St. James Lutheran School tuition assistance! PORTALS OF PRAYER: The Jan.-Mar edition is now available on the bookshelf in the narthex (the hallway leading into the back of the sanctuary). Take a few home and give them to relatives, friends, coworkers, and teammates. These devotions are short and very easy reading. It is a great way to start or end each day. LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on the appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. January 20 Life issues such as infertility, surprise pregnancy, or terminal diagnosis can loom like six stone jars (John 2:6). They remind us of our imperfections and our need for cleansing. As at Cana, Jesus still compassionately intervenes. He makes life issues speak instead the sweetness of His miraculous but mysterious salvation from the shadows of death. Let us delight to proclaim it lest the stones shame us by their crying out. LIFE QUOTES FROM LUTHERANS FOR LIFE ( Sixty million unborn children have died as a result of the Supreme Court s Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions. However, through the right-to-life movement s determination to protect mothers and their children, we continue to see evidence that our efforts to educate America about the unborn child s humanity, and our efforts to enact protective pro-life legislation, are having a tremendous impact in moving our nation away from Roe s and Doe s deadly legacy. Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life

COMFORT, COMFORT MY PEOPLE, SAYS YOUR GOD (ISAIAH 40:1): Is there someone in your life who has a need to be comforted? Is there someone you can share a joy with? You are invited to choose a card (or more) to share with anyone who would welcome a friendly note. Free cards are located on the counter in the west lobby. STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: John 2:5 His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. What must Mary have thought when Jesus replied, What does this have to do with Me? But she knew this: whatever her Son said to do would be a blessing, so she knows what advice to give to the servants: Do whatever He tells you. That s still good advice for us in every aspect of our lives including in our generosity toward the Lord s work in the Church $ FINANCIAL NEWS FROM MINDY SCHLOTMAN $ HAPPY NEW YEAR: We had such amazing weather and now we get to enjoy the beauty of winter! I hope you are all enjoying this snow since we only see it a few times a year. My four kids have been getting a lot of outdoor time with this snow! I wanted to give you a brief summary of the happenings in this office in the past couple of months. Of course we are hard at work on year-end items. Did you know we had about 80 W-2s? Can you believe this ministry hit so many souls in 2018 just as an employer? There are giving statements to complete and 1099s and just simple accounting items to wrap up. So we have been busy to say the least! You may be interested in knowing that we were able to purchase our printers in one year and a few months, so we no longer have the printer payment each month. We have finished paying off Concordia insurance for some different prior payments which is saving us around $4,000. Going forward, besides just the savings in expenses, we are saving around $5,000/month in bills. You have all been so gracious with your funding, and we are beginning to see some positive outcomes. Our goals are to continue reaching out with the ministry we have at our fingertips and working hard to be good stewards of the funds the Lord has provided to our church and school. WEEKLY OFFERING: 12/31/18-01/06/19: $13, /07/19-01/13/19: $6, THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY (27 January 2019) Nehemiah 8:1 3, 5 6, 8 10; 1 Corinthians 12:12 31a; Luke 4:16 30 The Lord Is Manifested as Our Savior through the Preaching of the Gospel When Jesus opens His mouth to preach, gracious words flow from His lips. The Scriptures are, indeed, fulfilled in your hearing (Luke 4:21 22). For Christ was anointed by the Spirit of the Lord to proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives and to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor (Luke 4:18 19). By this proclamation, Christ releases His people from captivity and gathers them to Himself in His Church. So it was when the Lord released His people from Babylon and returned them to Jerusalem. Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, sanctified the whole congregation by the reading and preaching of the Law (Neh. 8:8 9). As the people then were urged to eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready (Neh. 8:10), so are you anointed by the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ to share in His feast and to serve the fellow members of His Body with His good gifts, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it (1 Cor. 12:12, 24).
