1 Parish Mission Statement We, the members of Blessed Trinity Parish, share a common bond of love given to us through the Mystery of the Blessed Trinity. As the loving Father does, we welcome and support everyone who enters our faith community. As His Son exemplifies, we humbly strive to be a learning, giving, caring, and teaching parish eager to serve, evangelize, and give generously of ourselves to others. As the Holy Spirit inspires and leads us, we are a faithful, prayer family that worships God through the many gifts and ministries with which the Lord has blessed us. 3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 January 20, 2019 Thoughts from our Pastoral Administrator As we begin a new year.full of hope, promise, and expectations.take time to reflect on how each of us can enrich our faith life. Begin with small steps, like praying ten minutes a day for your family, your parish family, for any challenges you may be facing, or thankfulness and gratitude found in your day. Ask God to guide you, be with you, to take away anything from you not of Him and enrich your day. When I get too anxious with parish issues or family life, I often pray this phrase repeatedly, Jesus, I place all my trust with you. Each of us can improve our prayer life, which grounds us more in our faith and trust in the Father. For many years, I would leave my car radio off and pray on my way to and from work. Between work, coaching soccer, and church responsibilities, it was the only quiet time I had during the day. For those who like more prayer structure, we can offer ideas for daily readings or book ideas with daily prayers. Another idea to improve your faith journey is parish involvement. There are many areas for volunteer efforts, alongside your neighbors, to enable our parish to thrive and continue to grow. This weekend, the Knights of Columbus will be presenting membership opportunities and more about their ministry. Last weekend, the Men s Club held Chili Socials, sold tickets for their Family Breakfast event in February, and continually perform service projects, benefiting our Parish. Blessed Trinity offers book clubs, gospel studies, youth projects, and many other areas to volunteer your time and talents as gifts to our parish families. Our parish is what we make of it, what we want it to be and none of it can be done without your support. This past week was Catholic Schools Week, with many Catholic schools in the diocese welcoming everyone with open house events. On January 17, several hundred from the Diocese of Saginaw traveled to Washington, D.C. for the world s largest pro-life event: March for Life. The theme this year is: We are all unique from Day One. There will be a special Mass held at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption on Tuesday, January 22 at 5:30 p.m. with Bishop Walter Hurley. The Mass will commemorate the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. All are welcome to attend and spend time in the cathedral s beautiful space. May Christ be with you in all that you do, bless you throughout your day, and be gracious to you. 4 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 January 20, 2019 Youth Ministry News Tonight/Sunday, our high school youth will lead the gathering Popular at What Risk. Since many will be studying for exams, all are asked to bring their homework (junior high youth always seem to have work!). Pizza will be served! Last Sunday, we celebrated our annual March for Life event in honor of the march in Washington, D.C. Our youth discussed and created commercials based on bible verses about life. We ended our gathering with a silent march in town with lighted candles. Thanks to all who made this event a priority! (See pictures at left.) Our gathering on Social Media on Sunday, January 27 will end with us heading down to see the snow sculptures and sharing hot chocolate. Parents are reminded to pick up their child at The Harvest Coffee Shop. It s Soup-er Bowl time at BT on the weekend of February 2 & 3. Our youth will be outfitted in their favorite team s attire and will be at our church exits asking for your donations ($1.00 each?). All money collected will benefit the East Side Soup Kitchen (this event is their biggest fundraiser of the year). So, as you prepare for the big game and purchase your snacks, remember to set aside a dollar to help those in need. All youth are reminded to visit the youth room after Mass for Super Bowl cookies and an opportunity to predict the score and winner of Super Bowl LIII! I am in need of college youth s addresses before February 3. Please text, , or call me with this info. Parents - if you are reading this, I would appreciate your help with this effort. The Faith Formation Commission plans to send comfort boxes to our college age youth (at home or away) and we don t want anyone left out. Ladies Bible Sharing Ladies Bible Sharing will begin on Tuesday, January 22 and run through April with the topic of Being Disciples of Jesus. We meet on Tuesday mornings in room 7 at the parish from 9:30-11:00 a.m. All parish ladies and friends are welcome; call Val Sulfaro at to reserve your spot! Class of please send me a baby picture, First Eucharist picture, Confirmation picture, graduate picture, and family picture ASAP! Faith Breinanger didn t catch her name last week in the bulletin. Is Austin Sawicki reading this? Kathy Cramer ~ Director of Youth Ministry kcramer@blessedtrinityfrankenmuth.org How simple it is to see all the worry in the world cannot control the future. How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now, and that there will never be a time when it is not now.

5 Blessed Trinity Catholic Church Page 5 Frankenmuth MI Faith Formation News Our grade 2 students celebrated First Reconciliation last Saturday. Please keep these children in your prayers as they continue their journey toward Confirmation and First Holy Eucharist. (See group picture below this column.) Parents of grade 1 and 2 students are reminded that there are no Faith Formation classes on Thursday, January 24 (List Elementary has a halfday). Due to Confirmation being scheduled for Thursday, April 4, there will not be Faith Formation classes held for grades 1 and 2 students. This will provide time for the grade 2 families to prepare for Confirmation (to be held at Ss. Francis & Clare in Birch Run). Another reminder for parents of grade 2 students: our parent and child session for Confirmation preparation will be held on Sunday, February 10 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Pam Daily ~ Coordinator of Faith Formation pdaily@blessedtrinityfrankenmuth.org Jesus First Miracle: The Wedding Feast at Cana Bringing Home the Gospel, Pastoral Center Even Jesus needed a gentle push from his mother to embark on his mission. When she mentions the problem of the wine, Jesus tells her it isn t his time yet. Mary, ignoring his protest, instructs the servers to do whatever he tells them. She knows her son. After all, she raised him, and she taught him the virtue of compassion. We must be reminded that Jesus was a regular little boy. We know he never sinned, but if he was human he must have made mistakes. Like all good parents, Jesus mother and father had to teach him to face his problems, deal with them and, if possible, fix them. It s obvious from this story of the wedding at Cana that they also taught him to be aware of other people s problems, too. Compassion and caring about others is an essential quality for Christians. Help your children notice the little things: to see when their siblings or friends need help. Open their eyes to the details of life. Help them develop empathy for those who are hurting, including the unspoken hurts of frustration, embarrassment, humiliation, or defeat. Teach them to ask themselves: how would I feel and what can I do? Answer those questions with them when they are young. Jesus first miracle happened at a party because his mother pointed out that someone was in need. There was no big fanfare, no huge audience. Jesus responded, as he knew he should, as his parents had taught him. And his public ministry was launched. Sponsor Sanctuary Lamp Parishioners are invited to make an offering for the candles used in the sanctuary lamp (the lamp that burns 24/7 before the tabernacle) which reminds us of the presence of the Risen Lord in the Blessed Sacrament that is reserved in the tabernacle. Our sponsor of the week is: A & D Home Health Care To view this ad, see the back of the bulletin. Please patronize our sponsors. They make the bulletin possible. The light comes from a large candle placed in a red glass container and burns for seven days. The candle is generally replaced on Friday or Saturday each week throughout the year. If you would like to make an offering of $50.00 for these candles in honor or in memory of a family member, friend, neighbor, etc. please call the parish office to find out which weeks are available. Between the wish and the thing, life lies waiting.

6 Blessed Trinity Catholic Church Page 6 Frankenmuth MI Clothesline Store News The Clothesline Store in Frankenmuth is in desperate need of winter clothing for adults AND children: school clothes, coats, boots, and gloves. If you have these gently-loved and clean items, please drop them off at the Clothesline Store. As always, Clothesline Store volunteers are grateful for your donations. If you would like more information about this ministry, please contact the parish office at Electronic Tithing Electronic giving to your parish helps establish your stewardship as a priority. Once you authorize the amount of your contribution, it is electronically transferred to the parish account on the dates you specify. For more info, call Parish Bookkeeper Carol Maurer at There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart. Pursue these. Donate Household Items Thanks to all who bring in clothing and household donations for Emmaus House. All items are picked up on Monday mornings by a parish volunteer who delivers them to Saginaw. We ask that you only bring in two bags or boxes of donations at a time per week. We cannot handle a load of garage sale leftovers. If you have more than this or larger items, please call Emmaus House for pick up at: Nurture the spiritual ~ it is important to take your children to church rather than send them. They need to see that it is a priority in your life if it is ever to become a priority in theirs. In church, children find people who give them reinforcement for making the right choices. The newly minted pope bowed his head and invited us, the church, to bless him. How rare is it for leaders on the world stage to approach their role with humility and reverence? The typical response to the bestowal of power is a rising spirit of arrogance and aggression. We observe the contrast between the Magi who prostrated themselves before an infant, while King Herod snarled and plotted violence with his yes-men. How do we wield the authority we hold in our hands?

7 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 January 20, 2019 Just Showing Up is Not Enough Coming Events at the Center for Ministry Woody Allen is quoted as saying, 90 percent of life is showing up. What, though, do we do with the other 10 percent? The story of God calling the prophet Samuel attests that just showing up won t take you the whole way. The first two times Samuel heard a voice calling him in the night, he responded only, Here I am! The priest Eli, knowing something of God s ways, informs the young man that merely presenting himself in the holy place is insufficient. Samuel must also declare himself the servant of the Lord. Go Deeper With God Women s Silent Retreat will be held on Friday, February 1 - Sunday, February 3. Diocesan Pilgrimage to Mexico City with Fr. Christian Tabaras will take place on Saturday, February 23 - Thursday, February 28. Women s Day of Recollection: The Martha- Mary Balance of Daily Life will be held on Saturday, February 23 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Likewise, we should not rely on just showing up for the Lord. The final 10 percent is the part that makes the difference. Call the Diocesan Center for Ministry at for more information about any of these events. All are welcome! The Diocese of Saginaw encourages individuals to report clergy sexual abuse of minors and others - no matter when the abuse occurred. Individuals may contact local law enforcement authorities and/or they may report to the Diocese of Saginaw by calling the Victim Assistance Coordinator at or by ing jfulgenzi@dioceseofsaginaw.org. In addition, the Michigan Attorney General s Office can be contacted at its toll-free reporting hotline at (844) (M-F 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) or by at aginvestigations@michigan.gov. More information about the diocese s efforts to address abuse may be found at saginaw.org
