1 Lord s Supper Sunday, January 29 8:15 & 10:50 Services The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Come join us as we gather together in remembrance of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In This Issue Let Us Keep to the Point New Members! Sound/Video Ministry Opportunity Benevolence Offering Note of Appreciation New Members New Babies! Jet Set January/February Calendar Dear Church Family, Worship God Equip Believers Build Community Share Christ Another measure of time marked. One year gone; a new year before us. It seems one of the persistent challenges for all humankind is to relate to yesterday, today, and tomorrow in a healthy way. The typical hurdle for most is to let go of yesterday. Books are continuously published on how to do just that. And there are countless books on how to plan for tomorrow. How could we possibly improve on what Jesus said centuries ago? In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew He said: Therefore do not worry for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. I love that Jesus acknowledges trouble and needs, but speaks faith into the reality of our everyday living. How is your faith nowadays? Speaking of that, last Sunday I declared January as A Season of Spiritual Renewal. I am challenging us all to tend to our souls in the most basic and simplest ways. In this complicated, high-tech world we often make things a little too difficult. So, would you join me in simply reading the Word at a slow enough pace to let it percolate within you? Would you join me in believing God when he invites into His presence in prayer with the assurance that you do not have to be a theologian to do so? Then, would you consider directing your thoughts toward Him in a conscious manner throughout long periods of time throughout your day? Finally, would you join me in marking Sunday, January 29, as a special day to point to in our spiritual renewal as we anticipate our time together in worship, particularly as we approach the Lord s Table in observance of Communion? With God as our Sovereign Lord how can we not confidently march into 2017? See you Sunday. Volume 123 Number 1 January/February 2017 From Our Pastor Get Ready for the BIG GAME!!! 3 Let Us Keep to the Point my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death Philippians 1:20 My Utmost for His Highest.... my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed.... We will all feel very much ashamed if we do not yield to Jesus the areas of our lives He has asked us to yield to Him. It s as if Paul were saying, My determined purpose is to be my utmost for His highest my best for His glory. To reach that level of determination is a matter of the will, not of debate or of reasoning. It is absolute and irrevocable surrender of the will at that point. An undue amount of thought and consideration for ourselves is what keeps us from making that decision, although we cover it up with the pretense that is others we are considering. When we think seriously about what it will cost others if we obey the call of Jesus, we tell God He doesn t know what our obedience will mean. Keep to the point He does know. Shut out every other thought and keep yourself before God in this one thing only my utmost for His highest. I am determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and Him alone. My Unstoppable Determination for His Holiness. Whether it means life or death it makes no difference! (see 1:21). Paul was determined that nothing would stop him from doing exactly what God wanted. But before we choose to follow God s will, a crisis must develop in our lives. This happens because we tend to be unresponsive to God s gentler nudges. He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him and we begin to debate. He then providentially produces a crisis where we have to decide for or against. That moment becomes a great crossroads in our lives. If a crisis has come to you on any front, surrender your will to Jesus absolutely and irrevocably.
