SVDP 3 RD ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL COOKOUT tickets on Sale this weekend- SVdP will be selling tickets, this weekend, for the Back to School Cookout on Sunday September 11 th. Prices range from $5 for kids, up to $10 for adults. The same fabulous cooks will be back again. Please purchase your ticket and enjoy some good food and fellowship. THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS on Sunday, September 18th at the 10 a.m. Mass, will honor all couples who have a milestone wedding anniversary in 2016 (5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, etc.) are invited to participate. The program has been held every year since The Fourth Degree Assembly will provide an Honor Guard during the ceremony and a reception will be held following Mass. 2 24 th Sunday of the Year We are called to proclaim God s abundant love for all people. How can you be an instrument of that love? Our world needs you! Faith Formation began last Wednesday and continues this Wednesday, September 14th at 6:30 pm in the Family Life Classrooms and Spirit Room. Please complete registration forms and pay registration if you have not already done so. Volunteer applications are available as well. CONFIRMATION STUDENTS - The students who will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, October 23rd at 10:00 am need to have their first draft of the letter to the Bishop for Janet Rubino's review by Wednesday, September 7th. This is a draft only and can be ed to her at saintpat@catholicjewel.com The Confirmation students will meet in the Spirit Room at 6:30pm for Faith Formation on September 7th. Any questions, please contact Janet Rubino. CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD takes place on Sunday mornings beginning this Sunday, September 11 th. All children in pre-school to second grade are invited to hear the Word of God in a creative way directed to their understanding during the Liturgy of the Word in Mass. Children's Liturgy is held in the Chapel that adjoins the church. All catechist volunteers for CL are certified through the same guidelines of the Diocese as our Faith Formation catechists. No registration is needed for the children. Any adults who wish to volunteer as a CL catechist and those wishing to return are asked to contact Janet Rubino or Krista Carroll for more information. RCIA Considering joining the Catholic Church? Catholic but never confirmed? Need to make your First Communion? Want to be baptized? Let us help you get it done! Weekly classes are each Tuesday, at 6:00 pm September May. SERVICE DRIVE: The SPIRIT "Service Drive," is an opportunity that gives SPIRIT Youth the chance to help parishioners and other friends of SPIRIT with yard work, odd jobs, or other assistance in exchange for a donation to help offset SPIRIT functions. No work too big and no donation too small. If you have basic odd jobs you'd like help with, please contact Dale Blanchard to request help. Donations are requested at the end of the job. MUSIC MATTERS: As the new church year approaches, the Choir will resume the Sunday morning rehearsals at 8:30 am to prepare new music and seasonal pieces. Next Choir rehearsal is Sunday, September 18 at 8:30 am. SHAWL MINISTRY: The Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet this Monday, September 12 th at 6:30 pm. Interested in joining? Call Mary Evans. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY RAFFLE: The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be raffling off an afghan. The proceeds for the raffle will go towards our supplies. You will be able to see the afghan at the weekend Masses and purchase your chances then. The afghan is 44x56 and chances will be 3 for $1. You can also go to the church website to see a picture of the afghan. Just to let you know what has been going on with our ministry...for Christmas we took 41 hats to the Firehouse Shelter. Since the first of the year we have delivered 40 throws and shawls to 4 different nursing homes, South Haven, Plantation Manor, Cherry Hill and Magnolia Ridge. The items go to people who have few or no visitors. We took 20 scarves to First Light. We sent 21 hats to St. Jude Hospital and another 10 baby squares to Footprints. And we have given over 25 shawls or throws to parishioners and friends who have been ill, had surgery or have lost loved ones. You can help in this ministry by praying for all the people who have received items over the past 5 years.

3 RECONCILIATION True reconciliation is emotional, dramatic, and cleansing. When two people meet heart to heart and work through old hurts, misunderstandings, and careless words, cleansing tears often flow and the encounter ends with an embrace that fills both with the warmth of a love too strong to fade. The readings this weekend assure us of this healthy release that comes with reconciliation. They give us the courage to reach out to someone with whom we need to reconcile ourselves, and give us the courage to ask for forgiveness from God, too. In the reading from Exodus, we see how God refuses again and again to give up on the Israelites. Even though they grow impatient with God and turn to false idols, God still calls them back. Luke s Gospel assures us that God rejoices when we turn away from sin. Paul s letter to Timothy encourages us, like Paul, to look back on our lives and recognize where God s patient mercy has been shown to us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 9/11 REMEMBERED Fifteen years ago, the continuing TV coverage of the imploding twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York was unbearable for me, as were accounts of the crashes and destruction in Washington and the hills of Pennsylvania. The immense devastation of human life was incomprehensible. Visiting the site in New York some five years later reopened searing wounds, and overwhelmed me with immense sadness. An incursion on our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign elements, had shattered my cherished sense of security, and provoked a frightening sense of God s absence. How could my Catholic faith tradition enable me to endure this tragedy? I knew that neither vengeance nor sweeping animosity was an option for me. You have left us crushed... covered us with darkness. We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26). O LORD of hosts, restore us; Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4). The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning of the Israelite people, the chosen of God, who had regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach, now hurled into misery. The lament expresses a nation s agony, dares to complain against their divine protector, may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally pleads with God for deliverance. In the midst of lamenting, the faith of Israel endured, as must ours. We are as vulnerable as they were to the violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our demand for a divine explanation goes unheeded. Yet we have learned of the self-sacrificing heroism of many, witnessing to the finest character of our nation and of our Christian heritage. Dying for one s friends is a sacred theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and extended through centuries in the grandest and noblest acts of men and women in all circumstances. In 2001 we came together as one nation under God, sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emotion into a persistent pursuit of worldwide reconciliation and peace? Rev. Andrew Nelson, Copyright J. S. The story tells us that nothing and no one is insignificant to God who is compassionate and loving to all. Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul we want to help!

NOTE CHANGE!! DAILY MASS MINISTRY: Volunteers are needed to be Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers during Daily Mass. If you would like to serve please check in at the office 15 minutes before Mass begins. LOST AND FOUND: There are several articles in lost and found. Please call the Church Office for assistance. This line is located under the Home phone/(s) /wife s Maiden Name line. THE IMPORTANCE OF CANS! Thank you for your contribution of aluminum cans to benefit our youth programs at the church. Please remember to rinse your cans after use and do not crush them in any way so that they will fit into our can crusher properly. Finally, please deposit cans in the receptacle in the corner of the upper parking lot ensuring that they are placed in bags that are tied so that the cans do not fall out when retrieved by our volunteers. We appreciate everyone s cooperation and continue to SAVE THOSE CANS!
