2 On Friday we begin our annual week of prayer for unity among all Christians. May the Lord Jesus who prayed that all His followers should be one, guide us all in recognizing the gift of Christian faith and baptism that all Christians share, in our efforts to bring the principles of Christ s Gospel to bear in our society, and in our quest to form bridges rather than con- The Baptism of the Lord January 12-13, 2019 A Note from Our Pastor, struct barriers among our various Christian communities. Today with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus we come to the end of this year s Christmas Season. I am extremely grateful to all those who contributed in so many ways to make our Masses this Christmas Season so beautiful and inspiring. In particular, I want to thank all those who are part of our music ministry for their unselfish generosity which enabled us to hit all the right notes prior to our new Director of Music Mrs. Julie Fay beginning her ministry here. I am very grateful to the members of the 2 adult choirs and children s choir, Kathy Fitzpatrick who stepped in to rehearse and lead the children s choir at our 6pm Christmas Eve Mass and Pageant, the cantors, the various instrumentalists, and especially the several organists and pianists who not only played at the many Masses here, but who worked so effectively with the choirs and cantors. Particular gratitude goes to Lisa Gulino who put together the music schedule for the Advent and Christmas Seasons, ensuring that the necessary organists, pianists, cantors, and choirs were in place. All these individuals helped to ensure that the high anxiety with which I began the Advent Season dissipated very quickly when I recognized how many people generously stepped into the void and helped make the 2 sacred seasons of Advent and Christmas flow so smoothly and reverently for us all. As we celebrate Christ s Baptism this weekend, at the 9am Sunday Mass families who had a child baptized this past year will be present and recognized, and each child will receive a Miraculous Medal that was will be blessed at that Mass. Afterwards Kathy Pritchard and several others will provide a very pleasant social down in the Gathering Space right after the Mass. Beginning this week Lisa Gulino is hosting a study and discussion of Dan Burke s book Into the Deep which was distributed here at the Christmas Masses. Please see below in this bulletin for further details. A week from Monday January 21 st at 6:30pm at Concord Baptist Church (180 Blue Hill Avenue, Milton) there will be an interfaith service commemorating the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essays and art work from students in most of the Milton schools, including St. Agatha School, will be on display. All are invited to attend this service. Finally, I call to your attention an scam that took place a couple of weeks ago. Someone hacked into my gmail account (an account I have never used, by the way), purported to be me, and was asking parishioners to purchase gift cards. I am grateful that people let me know this was happening, and I apologize for the inconvenience to all who were contacted by the scammer. I found out that a pastor nearby has also been the victim of a similar scam. As a general rule, if I am going to contact parishioners by , I use my parish ending in stagathaparish.org. As we begin Ordinary Time in our Church Calendar, may this season bring extraordinary blessings to you, your families, and our parish and school. Have a blessed week! Fr. 3 St. Agatha Parish FEATURED WEEKLY READING THEME: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Gospel : Luke 3: 15 16, The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Pastoral Planning January 13 ~ The Baptism of the Lord Our gospel today recounts the story of Jesus baptism and the important words spoken by God about Jesus, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Imagine God saying these words to you, You are my beloved... with you I am well pleased. Take some time this week to think about the meaning of your baptism and the graces that have come from God through that once-in-a-lifetime sacrament. Do you recognize the difference this sacrament has made in your life? Share that with someone in your family, or with a friend. THE WEEKLY UPDATE Milton Quincy Welcome to 2019! You may have noticed that the scaffolding around the Church tower has been removed. Unfortunately this is not a sign that all is well. The Spillane Company that conducted the emergency repairs finished their work in early December, and we are now in the process of developing specifications for bidding the larger and much costlier repairs that will need to be done later this year. Since Spillane was paying a weekly rental on the staging it was not feasible for them to leave it up all Winter. As the bid documents are bring developed, the Parish Finance Council has been discussing strategies for raising the funds to pay for the work. A subcommittee will be meeting over the next two weeks to develop preliminary ideas and the full Finance Council will be meeting on February 12 th to hopefully finalize a plan. Because of the early holiday Bulletin schedule, the print deadline for last week s Bulletin occurred before the Weekly Offertory numbers for December were available. So below are the totals for both that weekend and the weekend of January 5 6. It was so great to see that we started off 2019 by exceeding our weekly target! In addition to the totals below, $3,751 was contributed on the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary. Also we received some late contributions for the Christmas Collection for the Health and Retirement Needs of Diocesan Priests which bring the final total for that collection to $27,132. Finally, the Grand Annual Appeal is drawing to a close. Recent contributions have brought the total thus far to $154,635, definitely within striking distance of our annual budgeted target of $170,000. There is still time for one last push. So if you haven t yet contributed and would like to help it would be very much appreciated. Jack Riley Registration for New Families New to the area? Welcome! 4 January 12-13, 2019 Now where did I leave that? The Sacred Pause Lisa M. Gulino Pastoral Associate Today, we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. Jesus, the sinless one, comes to the Jordan to share in the baptism of repentance administered by John the Baptist. Why did Jesus request baptism? The simple answer: Jesus is baptized for our sake, not his own. In our Gospel today there are four key phrases: the heavens are opened the Spirit of God descends on him like a dove this is my beloved Son I am well pleased While these phrases describe the historic event of Jesus baptism, these are also descriptive of the gifts you and I received in our Baptism. Through the great Sacrament of Baptism, the heavens are opened for us. We have access to the Father and to the heavenly places. Scripture says: For through Jesus we have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. (Eph 2:17). By virtue of our baptism we shall never journey alone and we grow in awareness of our heavenly destination. Like Jesus, in our baptism the Spirt of God descends and we are anointed. Scripture says, do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? (1 Cor 3:16). At our Baptism and every day, God acknowledges that we are his beloved. Scripture says: Y ou are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ (Gal 3:26). In the Jordan, the Father professed his approval for his Son, I am well pleased. Baptism grants us grace participation in the life of God * Scripture says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in his sight. (Eph 1:1-3). In Baptism we discover our great dignity and worth we are precious to God. Parents you are generous beyond compare as you seek to give your child what they need to succeed in life. By your own commitment to the Catholic Faith, their spiritual life unfolds and opens new horizons for a life well lived. Forming your child in faith through prayer and regular, ongoing worship at Mass makes a positive impact on their well-being and choices during their adolescent years. There are independent studies confirming such important facts. Baptism gives faith, faith allows us to rejoice in hope, and hope awakens our souls to a Love that is beyond all telling. Thank you for taking care of your child in the many ways you do: physically, emotionally, educationally, and spiritually. *Catechism of the Catholic Church, The Lost & Found area near the entrance of the Gathering Space is filling up with jackets, gloves, hats, you name it. If you ve misplaced an item that you may have had with you while attending Saint Agatha s, take a look under the statue of St. Anthony and it might be there. The Gathering Space is accessible after the Masses. Dear St. Anthony, please come around something is lost and it cannot be found. Want to save a life? We thought so! You can! Join TeamDujardin on February 2-3rd after any of the Masses Parishioners Bridget & Philip Dujardin are coordinating a drive for people to join the National Bone Marrow Be the Match registry. Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Often a bone marrow transplant is the only chance this person has for a cure. Bridget and Philip understand the struggle to find a match first hand, as Philip s brother is currently unable to find a match for his much needed bone marrow transplant. The weekend of February 2 3, 2019, after all the Masses, in the Gathering Space a representative from the Be the Match Registry along with a Dujardin family member, will be present to share more information about the process and the cheek swab kit. There is no cost for those between the ages of If you cannot make the event, you or your loved ones can register online at join.bethematch.org/teamdujardin. Thank you in advance for considering the possibility of joining the National Registry and perhaps assisting one of our own parishioners. Helping Families Along the Dementia Journey The holidays often give us an open window to what is going on in our loved ones lives. As joyful as time together can be, we may also discover that things are more than a bit off. Maybe your loved one just doesn t seem him or herself lately more forgetful than usual; more confused or at times, disoriented. So how do we realistically move forward to keep our loved ones safe and healthy? Join us on: Thursday, January 17, :00-7:30PM at St Mary s Parish Center 392 Hanover Street (Rte 139) Hanover, MA Is what I m seeing normal aging or dementia? How do I get a clear diagnosis? Where can I turn for support? Joan Wright, certified dementia practitioner and dementia care trainer, shares her own personal and professional experience with Alzheimer s caregiving to help families shift to a more positive approach in helping a loved one with cognitive challenges. Event is Free All are welcome! RSVP to Patty at (781) x 239 or pcockey@holymothers.com
