2 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 24-25, 2018 A Note from Our Pastor, As we gather this weekend after the Feast (and feasting!) of Thanksgiving and today celebrate the Kingship of Jesus Christ our Lord and share in His Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist, we pray especially for the Church. In my own frustration, impatience, and anger about the long-awaited meeting of the American bishops in Baltimore having been shortcircuited at the very last minute and causing us all to have to wait now another three months for the reforms and renewal that are so desperately needed, I was suddenly drawn to the following prayer from the early second century. It comes from a work in Greek called the Didache ( Teaching of the 12 Apostles), calling us back to the basics the will of God and of God s Son Jesus Christ for each of us individually and for us together as a people, as the Church. This prayer reminds us about the many blessings that should prompt our gratitude: knowledge, faith, immortality. It also prompts us to find in the Eucharist, and in the very process of bread being formed from disparate ears of grain, an image of what the Church is called to be: namely, a community of people from varied and disparate backgrounds, but united in giving praise and thanks to God and His Son Jesus Christ. I share this with you because this prayer makes clear that our ultimate cause for hope is Almighty God before whom we plead to be delivered from evil, made ever more perfect through His love, safeguarded in holiness, more closely united with all our sisters and brothers in faith, and prepared to be received, and, in a sense, transformed into the glorious Kingdom of God. Father, we thank You for Your Holy Name which You have planted in our hearts, and for the knowledge, faith, and immortality that You have made known to us through Jesus Your Son. Everything You created, O Lord, is meant to give glory to Your Name. You have given food and drink to human beings for their enjoyment and that they might give You thanks, but You have especially blessed us with spiritual food and drink and eternal life through Your Son. We thank You above all because You are almighty and deserving of everlasting glory. Remember, O Lord, Your Church, deliver her from all evil, perfect her in Your love, keep her holy, and gather her from the four winds into the Kingdom which You have prepared for her. As ears of grain, scattered along the mountainside, are gathered together to form one loaf, so too may Your Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into Your Kingdom. For Yours are the power and glory forever. Fr. Palardy My November column has focused on the journey of faith and its connection to daily life. Tangible faith is giving thanks to God daily. Perceptible faith is seeing love and trust in God s care. Charitable faith is caring for those in need. Faith encountered is meeting Jesus in the Sacraments such as Eucharist and Reconciliation. Empowered faith is the confidence to ask the deep questions of life who am I? What is the meaning of life? Is there more to life? What is my purpose? Transformed faith celebrates the grace that strengthens us and rejoices that we are wonderfully made and eternally loved by God. There are two common denominators in our walk of faith. The first is God. God is our foundation. The second are parents. My Thanksgiving column is dedicated to parents who are the unsung heroes of daily life. Here is a litany of gratitude I have written for all who parent: biological, adoptive, step-parents, Godparents, guardians, and grandparents. Thank you for the countless times: The Sacred Pause Lisa M. Gulino Pastoral Associate you support your children in building dreams to chase after. And for believing they have the talents to reach their goals; you teach them about their God-given dignity and worth they are loved and are worthy of love; you spend countless hours helping with homework, being proud of their successes and you continue to hold their dreams for them when they struggle to see the possibilities; you give a shoulder to cry on when struck by disappointment; you pray with your children at meals, before their going to sleep, and intercede for their significant events; you get to know their friends all of them to make sure they are choosing them wisely; you bring your children to the community of faith to worship and praise God for the blessings received and to ask for the graces necessary for their journey; you brave the struggles in your own life and your own faith to give your children an eternal perspective that transforms lives and gives hope eternal. On this Thanksgiving, let us thank our parents for their love and generosity! Allow me to give thanks to my late parents, Sal and Jean Gulino, for whom I am eternally grateful. Their belief in me, their witness of charity and faith, the heartfelt encouragement, their heroic patience towards me, and their constant love has made all the difference in my life.

3 St. Agatha Parish FEATURED WEEKLY READING THEME: Jesus reigns over us in truth. As you hear this reading from the Passion of Christ, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? Gospel: John 18:33B-37 Pilate said to Jesus, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me? Pilate answered, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here. So Pilate said to him, Then you are a king? Jesus answered, You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. Pastoral Planning November 25 ~ Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Pilate said to Jesus, Are you the King of the Jews? A question we need to ask ourselves today is, Is Jesus my King? Do I live with Jesus at the center of my life? Here are some suggestions that will help answer the question. When am I going to pray? When am I going to confession? How often do I receive Holy Communion? When am I going to do some charitable action? It s the end of the year. It s time to do inventory! Private Tour for our Parish ~ Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum ~ Begin the Advent season at the iconic Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 24 Evans Way, Boston! Meg Kaster, Museum Teacher and parishioner, will lead members of our St. Agatha Parish on a private tour on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 11:15am. We will explore one of the greatest private art collections in America. We will discover how Isabella created her remarkable Venetian palace and hear THE WEEKLY UPDATE Milton Quincy The Parish Finance Committee met last Tuesday to review the income and expenses of both the Parish and the School. In both cases the news regarding the operating budgets was very positive. In the School it was reported that we actually have 21 more students than we had budgeted for, so tuition revenue will be higher. The newly formed Family School Association has also been very active in both developing and implementing fundraisers and community-building social events such as a Movie Night, a dance and a hayride. Nancy Carr, our new Principal, also announced the involvement and financial commitment of the Lynch Foundation to our pre-school program. This will help to make a great program an excellent one. In short, things seem to have definitely turned the corner. In the Parish things are likewise solid on operational basis. The Weekly Offertory has fallen slightly behind last year s pace, but the Grand Annual is doing very well thus far. The big challenge facing the Parish, and the item which consumed by far the lion-share of the meeting, is the impending need for extensive masonry work on the exterior of the Church. Those parishioners who came before us and built and sustained the Church demonstrated great determination and stewardship. As we approach our 100 th, the work of building on their legacy and solidifying the Parish for its next century falls to us. The work we are currently doing is the first step and was so urgently needed that it could not wait until the Spring. However, the company doing the current work has provided a six-phase estimate based on our architect s analysis to address problems with the entire envelope of the Church and ranked them in order from #1 (the highest priority) to # 6. Their estimate to complete all 6 phases amounted to $864,522, with the bulk of that $625,722 being proposed for Priority #1 which is to complete the work on the four sides of the main tower. For a project this size we will most definitely seek competitive bids, and at its December 11 th meeting Finance Council will also consider the financing strategies. Operations Notes in December and January will have regular updates on the status of this situation. As mentioned last week, Weekly Offertory and updated Grand Annual totals were not available at the time this Bulletin was compiled because of an early submission date due to Thanksgiving. Those totals will be included in next week s Bulletin. Jack Riley stories about her incredible life and her passion for art in all forms; paintings, sculpture, horticulture, furniture, and tapestries. We will consider the spiritual nature of Mrs. Gardner, her artworks, and her museum. The Courtyard will have its Christmas display and Mrs. Gardner s holiday table will be set in the Tapestry Room. We hope you can join us. Pricing: $20 per person; $17 for seniors; $5 for members. RSVP to Lisa Gulino at lgulino@stagathaparish.org by Monday, December 3, 2018 to attend.

This week the children will bring home an Advent Calendar. Please place it somewhere in your home making it easy to refer to daily. Perhaps parents can help their child complete the suggested daily activity, helping to bring them closer to Jesus as we wait and prepare for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. We are in need of hall monitors on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:45 5:00pm. Hall monitors help to keep everyone safe during session time and aid our Catechists in maintaining order in the hallways as children are escorted to and from class and restroom breaks. Please call/ the Faith Formation Office if you are available to help or Thank you! 2018 Giving Tree Project It s not too early to begin considering volunteering to help out with this year s Christmas Giving Tree project which benefits the families supported by My Brother s Keeper. Volunteers will be needed in several different areas: assembling the ornaments and putting the Giving Trees in place for the collection; assistance before and after the Masses to hand out instructions to those who take ornaments; replenishing the trees as ornaments are selected and then, we will need many hands to do the final processing of the gifts. More details will be available in the coming weeks. Thank you as always for your generosity!
