7 INTERSECTIONS - SUMMER SERIES Jesus tells a lot of nice stories. What do they have to do with our real life? Where would they be set or apply today? After hearing them, freed by God's grace, how does God call us? What do we get to do? Through Sunday, August 27, we're excited to share a summer series we're calling Intersections - to help us think about where real life and faith meet. Worship features a more relaxed feel, familiar hymns and a simpler liturgy. We put away the worship robes until fall. Each week, you can use this new back page of The Chimes for further personal reflection - with space for drawing, writing, with a question or a quote or a way to engage with the scripture. Join us every week you are in town for worship and Summer of Service! Out of town? Make sure you re receiving our weekly to worship wherever you are with weekly scripture, questions, quotes and prayer to ponder and put into practice. Join in and invite a friend to discover Intersections at Muhlenberg! Use this space for personal notes and reflections. TODAY S GOSPEL Matthew 14: [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side [of the Sea of Galilee], while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. 28 Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. 29 He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. 7
8 SERMON NOTES, REFLECTIONS & DRAWING SPACE Have at it! Please use this space to make notes, ask questions, doodle, and offer insights or ideas. Kids and adults are welcome to draw we d love to feature some of your drawings, or answer your questions. Keep it for your personal reflection, or place it in the basket at the Welcome Desk in the Gathering Area so that we may respond or share your work/ideas! August 13, 2017 QUOTES TO CONSIDER At times you may wonder why you ve been sent to cross what feels like very rough water. And at other times you may feel God is calling you out of your comfort zone. And at still others you may have wished very much that you would have just stayed in the boat. --Dr. David Lose, In The Meantime Aug 4, 2014 Jesus is with us. He s with those of us who stay in the boat and will calm the storm that threatens. He s with those who try some grandstand move and fail, forgiving the failure 8 and, again, calming the storm. Jesus presence and power are the key to this story, not whether we are bold and courageous and impressive. --Scott Hoezee, Center for Excellence in Preaching, 2017 QUESTIONS In what situations do you find yourself sinking in fear? Can you take comfort in the fact Jesus stays with us, no matter what fear, faith, failure no matter what: Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. Tear off and take home, share with the pastors, or share with the congregation (place in basket at Welcome Desk)
