Bruce will say the Mass intentions for each weekday Mass when he is away from the parish. (MK - Mohn Koble) (DSS - Deacon Steve Streitz) My good sisters and brothers, I hope you are all enjoying the Christmas season. As Catholics we celebrate Christmas as a season, not as long as Easter but for a few weeks. In fact we continue Christmas until the feast of the Baptism of Jesus which this year is next Sunday, January 13. I will be leaving tomorrow for a break including my annual retreat and will return by January 19. Father Gary Norman will be filling in for me next weekend representing Food for the Poor. I know some of you are including Food for the Poor on your donation list. I believe they are a very reputable charity and they are approved by our diocese. Please pray for me while I am away. With deep love and affection, Fr Bruce Vocation Views The light of Christ shines upon you. How will you share that light with others? Consider the gift of a Church vocation. Please submit articles for our bulletin by 2:00 pm on Tuesday. Thank you! 3 Next Week s Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, January 13, The Baptism of the Lord Gospel Reflection We all want to be recognized for who we really are. Today's Gospel reading describes that memorable day when Jesus had the joy of being recognized by John the Baptist and approved by God as "God's beloved Son." Although Jesus did not need to be baptized (since he was without sin), he wanted to identify himself as closely as possible with God's people. Take a few minutes today to be thankful for your baptism. Ask Jesus to help you recognize yourself more deeply as a beloved daughter or son of God. Discussion Questions for Gospel How often do you recognize times when you have experienced God's favor and love? What can help you become more conscious every day of God acting in your life? What can you do to help others become more aware of God's love? Faith Formation and Youth Please contact Tanya at the parish, or education1@olgminot.org, or text with questions. Thanks! During Faith Formation classes, students in grades 2-5 have been practicing a song they'll sing at the January 6 10:30am Epiphany Sunday Mass. On January 6, all gr. 2-5 students should meet at 10:05 AM in the St. Gianna Room (Nursery), which is at the end of the dining room, where we'll have a full group rehearsal (with gr. 2-5 Sunday and Wednesday Faith Formation children all together). The students will sit together during the Mass and sing after Communion. Because of the Epiphany singing during the 10:30 AM Mass on January 6, there will be no CGS or Regular Preschool classes at 10:30am that day, and there will be no Children's Liturgy of the Word during the Mass. The 55 children in grades 2-8 who are currently preparing for First Reconciliation are beginning preparation for First Eucharist (Communion) in January, as well. The children and both parents, if possible, are required to attend one of our two First Eucharist Retreats. The first was held on January 3. If you didn't attend then, please come to the 2nd retreat on Sunday, January 6, from 1:30-3:30pm in the dining room. Our next Yes Lord rehearsal is Wednesday, January 16, from 6:30-7:15 PM in the main church. Everyone in grades 6-12 who loves to sing is invited. Our next Middle School Youth Group gathering is January 16 at 7:15 PM. All in grades 6-8 are welcome! As we begin a new year, we'll be playing a game about balance, another about stability and we'll talk about New Year's resolutions. (Have you made a faithfocused resolution yet?) And, of course, we'll eat! To allow Faith Formation students to go to confession during class twice each school year (in addition to the times their parents bring them to church for confession), Fr. Bruce has added more confession times to the Faith Formation calendar. Updated Faith Formation calendars will be mailed to homes and are available on the website and app under Faith Formation. What a wonderful gift for our students! Could you help with our Faith Formation classes on Wednesdays at 4:00 or 5:30 PM? We are in need of a few people who can volunteer as Aides in our larger class groups, especially at 4:00 PM when we have the most children. We could also use assistance with Dare to be a Disciple from 5:00-5:30 PM Wednesdays. You could do it for every class, once a month, or whatever works for you. Please contact Tanya for information. Calendar Sun., 1/6: 9:20am gr. K-5 classes; NO Preschool classes today due to older children singing at Mass; 10:05am all Wednesday and Sunday gr. 2-5 children meet in St. Gianna Room (Nursery) to rehearse then sit together during the 10:30am Mass and sing after communion; 1:30pm First Eucharist Retreat (option 2); 7:00pm High School Youth Group Wed., 1/9: 4:00 & 5:30pm gr. 4 Respect Life Let s look at today's Gospel story. First we have three differing types of Kings: Jesus king of the Jews, king Herod who wants Jesus killed and the three kings who come to give homage to Jesus. So kingship is defined by its relationship to the innocent baby. Consider the following: The three kings are inspired by God and led by a Star as they seek the Holy Child. Those in Pro- Life services are led by the Spirit of God to help the unborn child. The kings are inspired to seek and worship the promised Child even before His birth. Those in Pro-Life services are inspired to reverence the dignity of every unborn child. The kings are filled with awe and genuine excitement at the prospect of seeing the Child. Those in Pro-Life services have humility & good will as they turn to the unborn child. The kings are opposed and deceived by the Government of Herod and society s leaders. Those in Pro-Life services are hindered in their good works by Government and others. The kings protect the Child from Herod and this Government that is hostile to children. Those in Pro-Life services protect unborn children from hostile Government and others. The kings offer the Child (and His parents) gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Those in Pro-Life services offer unborn children and their parents resources, time & love. The three kings of olden days are as patron saints and models to those today who take up the mission to unborn and newborn babies and their parents, through the holy ministry of Pro-Life services. If you are one of these chosen Pro-Life volunteers, know that you have been guided by Divine Light to where you are today, and give thanks to God for the privilege of serving and trying to save the lives of His little ones at risk and in need. Thanks be to God for the three kings and Pro-Life Services volunteers!!! (excerpt from Unborn Word of the Day The Three Kings Remind Us Of Those Offering Pro-Life Services, January 6, 2008) Bishop Ryan Catholic School Lot-O-Dough Calendars are available for purchase for $25.
