1 The Broadcaster Vol. 390 No. 1 January / February NE 45th Avenue Portland, Oregon Rose City Park Presbyterian Church Communications Committee: Poised for an Eventful New Year A little more than a year ago, Tori Amling Field steered the Communication Committee into a new direction. Under her leadership, our small but mighty group took on the challenges of creating a pictorial directory, moving the website onto a new platform, and updating the website s tired appearance. We also added key events to the front page of the site, as well as an events page that is updated weekly. If you lose your bulletin, you may want to check the website for the event or announcement you re looking for: RCPPC s Facebook page has also taken on new life. Several times a week, moderators post photos, videos, events, things to think about, etc. What you ll find at The digital Broadcaster is another Communications Committee initiative. It saves paper, postage, and office staff time and energy. The days of misplacing your paper copy of the Broadcaster are over you ll always find a link to it on the website or our Facebook page. For those who don t have a computer, there are some paper copies available in the narthex. Then there s the eblast. While our group didn t conceive of it (thank you for starting it, Paulette it has really made a difference!), we try to contribute to its growth. Stay tuned for developments in the New Year! With these initial goals accomplished, we met over the summer to think deeply about how our committee can best serve the church. We believe that our job is to facilitate connectedness within the RCPPC community via effective communication. The sense of connectedness involves both the practical and the personal it s hard to feel connected if the church system is down, for example. To that end, we are looking at and thinking about everything from cyber security to how to share the stories of our faith journeys as individuals and a church community. The answer is simple: we need you! For example, we would love to have several people on a Facebook team, as well as a Broadcaster team to encourage committees to share what they are doing and tell church members and friends how they can get involved, etc.. And, in the new year, we will embark on the adventure of identifying our hopes and prioritizing our goals. Communications Committee, also known as ComCom, is never boring. Won t you consider joining us? We meet the first Wednesday of each month at 7 pm. Please speak to Karen LaBonté, Scott Greer, Leslye Johnson, or Paulette for more information. You can find us in your directory.
2 Psalm 19:1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaim God s handiwork. Chris Glaser writes that epiphanies are manifestations of divine glory. Natural epiphanies may be less evident to us than to the Psalmist. We find that our landscapes are hidden with asphalt and concreted. The sky s dome is cluttered with signs, buildings, and pollution. Our city lights prevent us from seeing the stars. Yet we don t have to look far to see that the world is charged with the grandeur of God. Gerard Manley wrote in his poem God s Grandeur a wild flower growing through a crack of concrete, a cat jumping from a high wall, the smile of a passing stranger all may be epiphanies, signs of God s presence. Glaser writes, Look within ourselves for epiphanies, manifestations of the sacred in our world. A sparkle in another s eye, freedom to be yourself, struggles for justice, tender care in our hurting world all proclaim that we are also God s handiwork. May each one of us be more aware of God s presence and each other in Grace, David Tower Talk Pastor David Dornack Thank you Appreciation for the continuing support (now forty years) from Hooks and Sinkers' Mariner's Roger and Susan Price, Woody and Rae Richen, Bill and Kathy Wiese and Wayne Knepper, along with Leslie Munson, for their talent in decorating the Sanctuary for Christmas. Linda Knepper Thank you I would like to thank individual members and families for turning in 2019 pledge cards. Your pledge contributions helps greatly in determining our 2019 budget for church programs and staff. The finance committee will present the new 2019 budget at annual meeting in February. Ray Amling Prayer Shawl Ministry The Shepherds are reviving the Prayer Shawl ministry. Because the Shepherds are facilitating communication between members, we often are made aware of someone who would be blessed with the gift of a prayer shawl. If you have yarn to donate, or would like to knit, crochet, or otherwise create a prayer shawl, talk to Cindy Robertson or Tommy Jane Roberts. Women s Retreat at Menucha The Women s Retreat at Menucha Retreat Center will be held October th with speaker Rev. Sandy Tice, pastor of First Presbyterian Church San Bernardino. Additional details to follow soon. Church Directory Notes Please report directory errors or changes, such as new mailing address, address, and/ or phone numbers to the church office. Also, for those of you who do not have your photo in the directory, you may a current photo of yourself to the office and it will be included in the next available edition. Please make sure that the photo is landscape (wide), not portrait (tall). Women s Morning Retreat On February 9 th, 2019 in the church parlor from 9:30-11:30 am, there will be a women s Morning Retreat with Lunch to follow. The theme is Emerging Light. Come join us for a time of renewal and reflection. RSVP to Paulette at: paulette@rosecityparkpres.org.
3 RCPPC Partners with HOMEpdx RCPPC first became involved with the HOMEpdx ministry in February It RCPPC Members Have Fun While Setting up for HOMEpdx. is an interfaith mission involving multiple churches and institutions, which serve meals to those facing housing and food insecurity. Meals are prepared and served every Sunday at Portland s East Bank Esplanade. RCPPC s commitment is on the 3rd Sunday of every other even month beginning in February. We have had enthusiastic involvement from many of our members over the years. One example is the Bromenschenkel/Bilotta family, who donate and bake cookies, as well as help serve. In the past year, our youth have assembled hygiene kits which they distribute on those days. We always welcome anyone wanting to e x p e r i e n c e t h i s opportunity to help those less fortunate. We always need help with prepping, serving, and cleaning up afterward Volunteers prepare to serve meals. Those wishing to volunteer should contact Terry and Thad Langford or Susan and Roger Price. Prayer Chain If you are interested in joining the RCPPC Prayer Chain, please see Andrea T. or Paulette for details. Sign-up is available every Sunday following worship. Contact Paulette at paulette@rosecityparkpres.org for questions or call Prayer Cards In the pews are cards and we would love to be praying for you. Please fill out your prayers and praises and return in the offering plate. Art With Alexander Alexander will be displaying his own twist on making snowflakes. View his unique creations at RCPPC through the month of January. Social Action Volunteers With Habitat for Humanity Pictured are RCPPC volunteers at the December 7 th clean up Rose City Park Presbyterian Church members participated in Habitat for Humanity s yard clean-up projects in Cully neighborhood on October 31 st and December 7 th. Yard clean-up is a new activity of Habitat for Humanity for elderly and disabled veterans in Cully. Yards are overgrown and in need of trash removal. A large dumpster of trash plus a truck filled with metals were removed. Yard clean-up projects will continue and your participation is welcomed, no skills necessary! If interested, contact the Social Action Committee for notification of the next event. - Social Action Committee

Here is our schedule for January and beyond: January 6: Epiphany Take down both trees; Cocoa and cookies January 13: knitting with Janice January 20: movie in the chapel January 27: music with Alejandra February 2019: Not sure exactly what we are doing for February yet, but it will likely include a church-wide scavenger hunt, card making, a possible cabin weekend, and for sure, music with Alejandra. Look for specific dates in the Sunday bulletin and weekly e-blast. Looking ahead, March 3 is our pancake Brunch, March 23 rd we will re-visit the Ft. Vancouver lantern tour, and are planning Pysanky Egg decorating with Maggie Emery. We meet each Sunday after services, from 11:15-12:15, food provided. Come check us out! Parents and grandparents are always welcome to join in too. - Laura Gillooly, Youth Ministries Director Fill a Green Bag to Fight Hunger Did you know that the rate of food insecurity in Oregon is 12.9%? The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Many of our neighbors simply can t afford to buy enough food for their families even when they re working. You can help by filling a green bag for the Portland Food Project. Bags are located in the narthex and are collected the first Sunday of every month from room 105. If you have questions about this program, please contact the office: office@rosecityparkpres.org, or visit: Martha Service: 1st Wednesdays Jan 2 nd and Feb 6 th we'll continue our work creating quilts, no-sew fleece blankets for children and adults in our community and our church family. In Feb. we traditionally make heart pillows that we donate to hospitals. There's a job for everyone - even if you don't sew. We start at 9:30 am in room 8, but drop by anytime. Reading Together No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance. - Confucius Reading Note: In January, both groups will be reading along with Multnomah County and the Everybody Reads selection, Americanah. High school students will be reading Adichie s essay, We Should All Be Feminists. Free copies of the book and the essay as well as ebooks will be available at local libraries and for the first time, unlimited copies of the downloadable audio book are available. Join the struggle against ignorance. Reading in the Afternoon: 1 pm in the chapel on the third Wednesday. January 16: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie February 20: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D.
