2 Page 2 Second Sunday of Advent Pastor s Page "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In this holy season of Advent, as we prepare to welcome Christ at Christmas, John the Baptist has words of advice and warnings for each one of us. He advises us to "prepare the way of the Lord," by true repentance of our past sins and a firm resolution to straighten "the ways of the Lord," that is, not to deviate from the true Christian way of life in the future. Please God, none of us deserves the reproaches he addressed to the Pharisees and Sadducees, but most of us perhaps can find traces of some predominant vices in our innermost selves. The pride and self-righteousness of the Pharisees ruined their otherwise good lives. The worldliness of the Sadducees made them lose interest in the future life, until they went so far as to deny any future existence after death. Of these two vices, that of the Sadducees is the more prevalent today, and it is to be found in the best of us, in a greater or lesser degree. While all true Christians repudiate atheistic Communism, with its denial of the existence of God and of a future life, many become so immersed in the things of this world that they have no time or thought for the world that is to come. While, theoretically, they reject Communism, they themselves, like the "brood of vipers" of whom the Baptist spoke, are full of the poison of materialism, and are injecting this poison into those whom they influence. A sincere examination of our outlook on life and death, and of our way of life up to today, will tell us how we stand in relation to Christ. Let each one of us ask himself: if Christ, for whose coming as the Divine Babe of Bethlehem we are preparing, were to come to him before Christmas as his just judge, how would he fare? Would he be gathered with the wheat into the granary, or be bundled with the chaff into the unquenchable fire? Each one of us has the decision in his own hands. 3 St. Kilian Catholic Church Page 3 CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT ENACTMENT Children in grades 3-6 The Liturgy of the Word as a nativity enactment will be during the 6:00pm Christmas Eve Mass in the church. We need children to participate!! Fr. Wayne would love to involve all the children at a special time during our Liturgy, but children Grades 3 through 6 especially are needed to do the actual enactment. If you would like to be involved please come to the first gathering on Sunday, December 8, at 1:30pm in the Parish Center. Our rehearsals will be Sunday afternoons December 8 & 15, from 1:30-3pm and again Tuesday December 17 from 5:30-7pm. We will go over costuming, conduct and study what the Nativity means to us. Bringing Christmas Joy to Children Once again as part of the St. Kilian Food Pantry Christmas distribution we will be giving gifts to children in need. This gift distribution has been a success in the past due to your overwhelming generosity. With many families struggling during this tough economy, your donation will help to brighten their spirits. 8 Page 8 Second Sunday of Advent SKY stands for St. Kilian Youth. SKY is where the teens of our parish share their faith and have lots of fun. SKY NEWS Are you a high school student and new member of the St. Kilian family? If so, St. Kilian Youth group would love to invite you to our very special "Welcome To Sky" night happening December 8th. Come celebrate Mass with us at 5pm and then join us right after for a fun-filled youth night. Confirmation I students are highly encouraged to come. Food, fun, fellowship. Treat yourself or a special someone this Christmas season with a merrily delicious box of See's Candies! Not only will your purchase benefit your taste buds but it will also benefit St. Kilian Youth Ministry. Our fundraiser will be taking place on December 7, 8, 14 and 15. Advent Penance Service Monday December 9, 7:30 PM RE Children and Families are invited to participate This year children from our Religious Education program will be participating in our Parish Penance Service. Children and their parents will be greeters, readers and singers. Please plan on joining us during this holy season as we prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus as the Light of the World. Religious Education for Special Needs Children THANK YOU Thank you to all who responded to our request for volunteers to assist our Special Needs children. We offer Special Education Religious Education classes on Fridays, 4:30-5:30 PM. We also try to include all children that are able in our RE classes that meet during the week. It would be ideal to have individual aides for these children so that they are able to participate in the classroom activities. We appreciate all that contacted our office and would welcome anyone interested in volunteering with our Religious Education ministry. 9 St. Kilian Catholic Church Page 9 CIRCLE OF GRACE Safe Environment Training Program We are grateful to the Volunteers who presented this new child safety program that educates and empowers our children and young people to actively participate in a safe environment for themselves and others. Thanks also to our children, Catechists and Aides for their positive and respectful response to the information presented. Together we can ensure our children know that God s Grace and Love surrounds them in every situation and that the Holy Spirit is with them to guide them in making the right choices. No registration is required. This drop-in program during mass is open to all grade school age children. Parents are welcome, too! Child Care Is available during at 9:00am, 10:45am, 12:30pm. On behalf of the Intellectually Disabled here in Orange County, the Knights of Columbus would like to thank you, the parishioners of St. Kilian Church for making last October s Drive for the Intellectually Disabled a noteworthy success. Due to your generosity, we were able to reach our goal of raising over $8,000. This will be enough to send 8 children to week-long camps, enriching their lives considerably. Once again, a heartfelt and big Thank You - you re wonderful!! SKY Fundraiser St. Kilian Youth Ministry - SKY - will be selling See s Candies outside the Church before and after all the this weekend and next. You know you will buy some eventually, so do your holiday shopping here and support our youth. Besides, chocolate is good for you! You know you want it. You ve got to have it. Our daily mission is to love God first in the ordinary events of each day and to live each day as though it were our last. Heaven is our goal! Join us this Advent Season as we prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus this Christmas and grow in our relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Shepherds of Christ The monthly SoC prayer meeting will be held in the Church on FRIDAY 12/13 at 6 PM. (Please note the change in the start time.) You are encouraged to bring a new guest so we can perform the work Our Lord has assigned to the Shepherds of Christ. Rehearsal Times: Adult Choir: Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. Children s Choir: Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. Fil-Am Choir: Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Grace Notes (young adults): Thursdays at 5:45 p.m. Instrumental Musicians: 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Shine Down (for teens in high school): Sundays at 3:30 p.m. BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY The Bereavement Ministry supports parishioners who are grieving after the loss of a loved one. This includes assistance with the funeral liturgy, vigil and rosary service and follow-up as a resource for referral to grief support groups within our community. In addition, members plan and participate in the annual Memorial Mass each November.
