1 St. Paul Dove Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church (The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod) 31 Washington Avenue Batavia, NY Office: (585) JANUARY 2019 A Letter From Pastor Werk Dear members and friends of St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, Lots of people make plans for what they want to do differently in the new year. Some of those plans have to do with diet and exercise. Some people set goals for their career or for travel. Some people plan to build on a friendship or get more involved with a club or charity. The beginning of a new year opens our minds to all kinds of possibilities. I want to challenge you with a spiritual goal. What are you going to do to strengthen your relationship with Jesus this year? How will you follow Jesus more closely this year? I believe this will have a bigger impact on your life than any other goal you might undertake. None of us have such a close walk with Jesus that there isn t room for improvement. And frankly for a Christian, having an arm s length relationship with Jesus is not an option. Our Savior wants to be involved in every bit of our life. There is nothing from which He should be excluded. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:15 (NIV) So, how are you going to strengthen your relationship with Jesus? How are you going to walk through each day of this year more closely with Him? I would suggest you make prayer a daily, hourly priority in your life. Talk to Jesus all the time, but set aside a special time each day to be alone with Him and pour out your heart. Obviously, you also need to have time to listen to Him speak to you. That means setting aside time every day to read His letters to you, the Bible. You may also want to use a devotion book of some sort to guide your reading of God s Word and help keep you on track. But for this to really make a difference in your life, you need another important step. You need to ask yourself a question every day. How will I use what I read today? What does God want to try to change in my life today through these words? Jesus doesn t want you to be able to quote the Bible passage. He wants you to live the Bible passage. Jesus wants your life to be completely reshaped by His Word. Back to that core question. Where do you see what He is talking about happening in your life today? My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 84:2 (NIV) 8 Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. 9 My soul yearns for you in the night; CONTINUED ON PAGE 2... In Jesus, God does the same-he turns His Word toward us. (John 1:1-18) January 13 "Reason to Believe" Do you have a reason to believe that everyone should believe what you believe? John did. Come and see. (John 1:19-51) January 20 "My Delight is in Her" As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, God rejoices over you. This week we explore our new name and identity as the bride of Christ. (Isaiah 62:1-5) January 27 "Surrender to Start New" Starting a new life involves surrender-a break with the past. In that surrender, the past can be restored. (John 2:1-25) St. Paul Dove CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE... in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. Isaiah 26:8-9 (NIV) God wants us to develop a deep hunger and yearning for Him. He wants us to grow to love Him so that we can t stand to be apart from Him. And He promises that as we draw closer to Him, He will also come nearer to us. Jesus wants that close walk with you this year. Will you make it a priority in your life so that close relationship can flourish every day? Come near to God and he will come near to you. James 4:8a (NIV) May this new year see all of us growing closer to our Savior Jesus, and may we learn to walk with Him more faithfully, shaped by His love and guided by His wisdom. We are a family of disciples using every gift that Jesus gives us to take the heart of Je- sus to the heart of our community and to bring our community to Jesus. 3 Page 3 NOONTIME BIBLE STUDY Leader: Jackie Blank Contact: When: 1st Tuesday of each month at 12:00 p.m. Where: Church Library - NOONTIME BIBLE STUDY will meet in the library on Tuesday, January 8. When you are in a stressful situation, how do you strive to remain calm? Sooner or later we all face a life crisis which may be physical or mental and threatens body or soul. We must deal with this difficulty and need help to get through it. Shh! Peace. Be Still. is the topic for this study, found in the LWML Winter Quarterly, and looks at what God promises. Bring a bag lunch, come early to enjoy some social time and then explore God s Word with us. You are encouraged to give this study a try and will find it to be a very welcoming group. Copies of the study are available to anyone who does not have the Quarterly. QUILTERS Leaders: Jackie Blank and Eunice Gardner Contact: When: Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. Where: Church Basement ST. PAUL QUILTERS are taking a two week break to celebrate Christmas & New Year s Day, which both fall on a Tuesday. We will resume our regular schedule of working together beginning Jan. 8 at 9:00am in the church basement. As we settle into the less busy months of winter we invite you to come see what we do. We are always in need of help and would appreciate the gift of your time. The work is easy and provides a nice opportunity for us to socialize as we prepare quilts to provide warmth and comfort to those in need. You do not have to be a sewer to join us. Tying, pinning, and cutting up or taking apart donations are what we do. Visitors are always welcome. Five women from the Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church joined us Dec. 4. They were interested to learn about our program & hopefully get ideas for service projects that they would like to work on. We gave them a tour, explained what we did & why we did it the way we do, shared Lutheran World Relief materials with them, & gave them a chance to tie or pin with us. We enjoyed our time with them. Three of these women brought their lunch & attended the Noontime Bible Study. It was nice to study God s Word together & grow in our faith. Our Quilting Ladies. > A NOTE OF THANKS THANK YOU to Laura Jean Eggers for inviting the quilters to a wonderful, fun-filled lunch at the Manor.
