Session Pacing Guide for 8/13/17 8:30am 8:45am / 10:15am 10:30am: Catechist check-in Before going to your classroom, check your mailbox (a file folder container located on Laura s table in the hallway). The following materials will be in your mailbox: Class roster - This will be a computer generated sheet with general parent information and any special information for each child. Please make sure you verify the parent s cell phone number they can be reached at during PSR. Please also confirm any allergies (how severe these are) or special needs and any emergency procedures if needed. Attendance Sheet Please have an adult catechist take attendance by writing a P next to the child s name if they are present and an A to mark child absent. These attendance sheets MUST be returned to your mailbox each week before you leave the building. Coordinate with your co-teacher(s) and aides so you can take your own children to meet their teachers. 8:45am 9:00am / 10:30am 10:45am: Parents and children arrive in the classrooms Make sure each family receives a gold welcome letter that has our PSR schedule printed on the backside. Confirm that the child is on your roster. If a child is not on your roster, please send the family to Laura s table. Please direct any parents who have not registered their children to Laura. Please do not make any promises on placing their child in your class. Kindly let them know that you cannot make any decisions on placement. Remind parents that there is no carpool. On Sundays, students can be dropped off at the back entrances of Blessed Trinity or walk in through the front 2 entrances at the main doors or near the chapel. However, parents will need to pick up their child in the classroom at the end of the session. The horseshoe at the front entrance of Blessed Trinity is closed to car traffic on Sundays. Remind parents that our catechists make every effort to arrive minutes before class. However, should a circumstance arise, and a teacher is not present when a child arrives to class, please ask the parent to wait with the child until a teacher arrives. Remind parents that class will finish this week and every week at 10:15am / 12:00pm.
Lesson Plan for First Class 8:45 9:10 Welcome Activity Parents check rosters to verify contact & allergy information. They are then free to leave. Students arrive and create name cards (cardstock folded in half horizontally with crayons) while catechists are going over important information with parents. Introductions: Catechists introduce themselves to the children and tell them why they have chosen to be catechist this year. Go around and read each of the children s name cards aloud introducing each child to the class. Ask that child a simple question about one of the following favorite things: Ice cream flavor Disney movie character Disney movie Sports team Color 9:10 9:30 Create and Introduce Prayer Table It is important to have a prayer space present for the children at each class. Basic prayer table supplies will be included in your classroom supply bin. These will be shared between both PSR sessions. The prayer table is the focal point of a classroom prayer space. It is a place where the Bible is given reverence, where children can interact, in a meaningful and positive way, with their faith. Each week, the children will have various tasks that help to set up the prayer table. Please wait until class begins to set up the prayer space in order to include the children in this activity. The purpose for this is to allow them to become accustomed to all the materials that belong in a prayer table and to their purpose. The following items will make up the prayer tables for PSR this year: Tablecloth When we have special meals in our home, we often use a tablecloth. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, an altar cloth adorns the altar. We will cover our prayer space with a tablecloth to identify it as a special place in our classroom where we offer reverence for our Lord. Liturgical Ribbons (Green, White, Red and Purple) These ribbons will signify the liturgical colors each Sunday ORDINARY TIME Green ADVENT & LENT Purple CHRISTMAS & EASTER White TRIDUUM & PENTECOST - Red (continued on next page)
Bible elevated Given a place of honor on the table because it is the inspired Word of God. Candle electric tea light Crucifix Rosary Light is the fitting symbol of God, the All Pure, the Source of all grace and enlightenment. It represents our Blessed Savior and His mission. Lighting the prayer table candle before prayer helps to settle students and create an atmosphere of sacredness and respect for prayer time. This is a visual reminder of Jesus sacrifice for us. It is a sign of hope and salvation. This is a form of prayer that involves our participation physically, verbally, and mentally. Its power is so great that we do not need to even say it to benefit from it. Having a Rosary on your prayer table and giving students the opportunity to hold it and pray it is a wonderful thing. Prayer Table Elements According to Season Different items will be added to our prayer spaces to reflect the different seasons as they come and go. When these items are added, a short explanation will be given to all catechists to use in their classes. Each week, your session will start with the class gathering at the prayer table. This year, every class will begin and end with the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. We will begin to incorporate the Act of Contrition as the children are introduced to the prayer in the next few sessions. 9:30 9:45 Practice Fire Drill, Tour of Blessed Trinity, and Bathroom Break Fire drill Every year, each PSR class is required to have a fire drill. The evacuation route is posted in each classroom. Each class will conduct their own fire drill. Today would be a great day to familiarize your class with this route along with several other locations in the building like the bathrooms, chapel, entrances and exits. 9:45 9:55 Gospel Reading and Activity Use the Loyola Sunday Connection (found below) to go along with today s Gospel reading.
9:55 10:15 Classroom Rules & Closing Prayer Classroom rules should be discussed as a group in class today. Brainstorm a few rules for their Classroom Contract (See attached sheet) and have each student and Catechist sign it. I will have these in your mailboxes each week. Make a plan to reinforce these rules every time you meet. Close class today with the Our Father, Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. 10:15 End of Class All children should be picked up by a parent before you leave your classroom today. Please put all class materials into the classroom bins and move the bins back to the location where you found them at the beginning of class. Make sure all trash is cleaned up and put in the classroom trash cans. All classroom furniture should be put back into the original locations before you leave. If you have any extra materials from class, please place those back in your mailbox at Laura s table along with the attendance sheet from your class.
Gospel Reading Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus walks on water and the disciples acknowledge him as the Son of God. Preparation for Sunday Scripture Readings Say: Today s Gospel tells us about a time when Jesus' disciples recognized Jesus as God s own Son. As we listen to this Gospel, let s imagine that we are there. To help us do this, I will need you to act out this Gospel story. Invite volunteers to be Jesus, Peter, and the disciples. If the entire group would like to participate, then allow everyone to be disciples. As you read aloud today s Gospel, help the group to act out their roles. Read Matthew 14: Ask: Why did the disciples become afraid in this story? (They thought they were seeing a ghost.) What did Peter want to do? (He wanted to walk on the water as Jesus did.) What happened when Peter tried to walk on the water?(he grew afraid and started to sink.) What did Jesus do? (Jesus helped Peter when he grew afraid.) What did the disciples learn about Jesus in this story?(they learned that Jesus is the Son of God.) Say: Jesus teaches us an amazing thing in this story. Peter wants to be like Jesus; he wants to walk on the water. And Jesus says, Yes! Jesus wants us to share in the amazing and wonderful work that he can do. This is what the members of the Church are called to do today. But to do this work, we have to trust that Jesus will always be helping us to do it. If we forget this, then we can t do Jesus work well. Like Peter, we may sink. But even if we forget and grow fearful, Jesus will still help us, just as he helped Peter.
