2 Page 2 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Page Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, READ THE THING Before anyone sends another letter or expressing concern over the Holy Father s latest encyclical, be aware of two things: 1. I don t have Pope Francis on speed dial! 2. You don t have to trade in your car for a bicycle! As the name suggests, an encyclical is a circular letter, typically meant to be circulated either among bishops, or the faithful in general. Through such letters, the Holy Father may choose to raise questions about timely issues with magisterial authority, by which he brings to bear the Church s moral voice on any number of topics of pressing concern. Pope Leo XIII insisted that workers had the right to unionize in Rerum Novarum, Pius XI tackled Nazism and Atheistic Communism in Mit Brennender Sorge and Divini Redemptoris and Paul VI wrote in his apostolic letter Octogesima Adveniens that environmental degradation was a wide-ranging social problem which concerns the entire human family. Pope St. John Paul II frequently dealt with environmental concerns, applying biblical principles to ecological questions in Sollicitudo rei socialis, criticizing the arbitrary use of the Earth in Centesimus Annus and warning against ozone layer depletion in a 1990 message in which he called for the right to a safe environment. Many also forget that Pope Benedict XVI was nicknamed the Green Pope because of his frequent admonitions against the misuse of the planet s resources, lamenting desertification, deforestation, agricultural depletion, and climate change, asserting that the Church has a responsibility towards creation and she must assert this responsibility in the public sphere. If so many previous pontiffs have tackled thorny socio-political or environmental issues in the past with hardly a nod from the public at large, why is this particular letter generating so much reaction? I wouldn t want to venture an opinion (publicly anyway), but we do live in very different times, both in terms of political discourse and technology, especially with social media. Letters which might have gradually circulated among bishops and a few well-read Catholics are now instantly leaked over the internet to anyone with a smartphone or computer. What might have taken weeks or even months to thoughtfully digest, is now chewed up and spit out by self-styled pundits in a matter of hours, if not minutes. Careful reflection gives way to knee-jerk reaction, hardly the spirit of reverence and respect with which the Church asks the faithful to receive the Holy Father s letters. Fr. Thomas Petri, vice president and academic dean of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. states that while Catholics may prudentially disagree with a specific policy guidance or factual explanation, they must respectfully consider the Pope s words and follow the Pope s moral counsel. If you happen to have actually read the encyclical, you may have noted that his prime concern is how these environmental issues affect the most vulnerable and poor in society. This is why he chose the title, Laudato Si, (Praise to You), a quote from his patron, St. Francis of Assisi. In this light, Pope Francis, like all Supreme Pontiffs, teaches that which is held ubique, semper et ab omnibus (everywhere, always and by all) in regard to our tradition of caring for the poor. While we may legitimately differ on questions of science and policy, the underlying principles of charity and good stewardship are inarguable. Fr. Bruce To read the encyclical online, go to: papa-francesco_ _enciclica-laudato-si.html, or just Google Laudato Si.
