I was asked to reflect on St. Francis de Sales quote, he says, Bloom Where You Are Planted. Well, I guess you could call me a transplant sort of. I grew up in St. Paul Parish back in the 50 s and 60 s. Life was different back then (a long time ago). I was a server and involved, but didn t realize how important God was in my life. St. Paul is our mother parish and St. Francis was from an area that was growing in the faith and needed spiritual guidance because of the hugeness of my former parish. How has this journey affected my vocation? My arrival at St. Francis in 1971 was an eye opener. Right after Vatican Council II, many of the changes in the involvement of the laity in parish life was started. I first started as a communicator to instruct the faithful on participating in the new Mass. I became a lector and was given the privilege to proclaim the Word at Mass WOW! Reading the New and Old Testament was new to me but enabled me to look deeper into what the Bible was revealing to me. This gentle touch of Jesus in my life opened new doors. Later in the 70 s I was asked by our pastor to think about becoming a Eucharistic Minister. Again, what a privilege it was (and is) to actually hold the Lord in my hand and offer His presence to you, the faithful! Growing in faith and the belief in who and what we are as Catholic became very instrumental and real for me. My faith journey continued on many different paths, but something was missing. The decision to approach the Diaconate was not one that was immediate. I thought about it for years but when Deacon Richard became a deacon I thought, what a relief. One of those deacon guys was enough. But, God had different plans, again. Much thought and discernment went into the final decision to apply for the Diaconate. Since my time at the Seminary and ordination, I have learned something very profound. This vocation that God has called me to has enriched my life immensely. This parish is very special. We all share in God s loving revelation to each of us; we need to be open to that soft whisper. Christ gave us His Body and Blood to nourish us. The Holy Spirit works in our life; let Him inspire and guide us forward. As we continue our next seventy years may we learn to love others and bring the message of the Gospel to all we meet. Your Brother in Christ, Deacon Ray Ordained on May 7, 2005

Jesse s design depicts a young man walking up a mountain where he passes signs that lead him to Sainthood and remind him that he is blessed. Jesse s design also depicts a beautiful quote: The higher we go the better we shall hear the voice of Christ. - Blessed Pier Giorgio. We also celebrate some other great T-shirt entries. Congratulations to Kindergartner Madison Fraleigh, 4th grader Danny Lute, 5th grader Quinn Slota, 6th graders Sienna Miller and Libby Shoemaker, and 7th grader Ashley Lute as our runners up. 5 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 14, 2018 JUST A LITTLE UPDATE I know many of you are asking what is going on with all of the tree removal and excavation work being done on Diederich Lane. Well, for all you curious souls, the area that is being cleared is for the construction of a pole building to be used to consolidate all of the equipment that is currently spread out in many different locations around the St. Francis de Sales campus. Also, in the beginning of November, we will begin work to create additional parking spots. These spots will be going on the ball field between the playground and Diederich Lane. Hopefully, this will be welcome news for the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Mass participants! Dennis Ott, Project Manager DEAR PARISHIONERS, My name is Paul Hirsch, Jr. (PJ), and I am a senior at Archbishop Hoban High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 215 here at St. Francis de Sales. My project is to build a floating swim dock for the Akron Rotary Camp, which will be used by the campers during swimming lessons. My project is in the final planning stages, and I would like to build the dock by the end of October. I am accepting monetary donations on behalf of the Akron Rotary Camp for materials for the dock. Donations may be sent to: Akron Rotary Camp, Attn: PJ Hirsch Eagle Project 4460 Rex Lake Drive, Akron, OH Thank you for supporting Akron Rotary Camp and the Boy Scouts! We long to love and be loved, but how often do we just feel lonely? As we search for ways to escape these feelings of isolation, there comes a small, quiet whisper that pierces through to the depths of our heart: You are never alone, because you are Mine. You belong. From the Executive Director, Kathryn Makra: It is only with your help that we can continue to provide the most needed items to our client families. Your continued support to those who live in this area allows them to feel valued. Furthermore, because you invest in our client families, they continue to have hope in their hearts that they can count on us for that helping hand. We are so blessed and humbled by the generosity of St. Francis de Sales parishioners and all race participants. Thank you for supporting our mission. LIFT UP YOUR HEART Sixth Meditation Judgement Over 140 parishioners are attending this Book Study. Each week they are asked to find a quiet place and through a short prayer put themselves in the presence of Christ. For the remaining part of that week they are asked to reflect on thoughts from that meditation. Finally, they meet to discuss the meditation. If you aren t attending these weekly sessions join us anyway by taking this bulletin, circling a few words from the list below, and over the next several days, using daily repetitive activities to spark a reflection on your circled thoughts. Some opportunities might be your coffee break, when you place your phone down, each time you open your wallet or purse. Start a process of daily reflection and make it grow. You might even try leaving your marked-up bulletin open on your kitchen table. By the way, you can find all the previous meditation briefs in the archived bulletins on our parish website. Thoughts for reflection on this meditation follow. Judgement is a direct result of our freewill to make choices. Ultimately, freedom means we are free to choose our eternal residence. Then will the culpable unbelief that counted the offer of God s grace as nothing be condemned. (CCC 678) By rejecting grace in this life, one already judges oneself. (CCC 679) Judgment is real and it is in our future and it is permanent. The thought of entering the kingdom of God once and for all lifts the heart. God has given us everything we need, by grace and by sacrament, to ensure that we may need never hear those words of condemnation. God s only desire is for our eternal happiness. Possible Sixth Meditation discussion questions Do you think that you will be surprised by your judgement? In your own words comment to the meaning of the quote from CCC 678 above? The Gospel from the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time speaks of a hardened heart. How does such a mental condition relate to our judgement? In the Third Meditation we heard, Over time, the conscience has become numb, and sins have become many. Can our indifference or hardheartedness make us less culpable of sin? Did Christ establish a Church with the power to identify what a serious sin is?
