2 PAGE 2 THE CONVERSATION VOLUME 18, NUMBER 7 YÜÉÅ bâü ctáàéü Dr. D. L. Brewer Is it important to attend church each week? The scripture is clear in answer to the question. The Bible tells us we need to attend church so we can worship God with other believers and be taught His Word for our spiritual growth (Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:25). Church is the place where believers can love one another (1 John 4:12), encourage one another (Hebrews 3:13), spur one another (Hebrews 10:24), serve one another (Galatians 5:13), instruct one another (Romans 15:14), honor one another (Romans 12:10), and be kind and compassionate to one another (Ephesians 4:32). When a person trusts Jesus Christ for salvation, he or she is made a member of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27). For a church body to function properly, all of its body parts need to be present (1 Corinthians 12:14-20). Likewise, a believer will never reach full spiritual maturity without the assistance and encouragement of other believers (1 Corinthians 12:21-26). For these reasons, church attendance, participation, and fellowship should be regular habits of a believer's life. Weekly church attendance is in no sense required for believers, but someone who belongs to Christ should have a desire to worship God, receive His Word, and fellowship with other believers. You are missed when you don t join us for worship and while we realize there are many times when circumstances may prevent us from being together with others of our family in a worship experience, we should also realize the importance in our own life of being with those who love and care about us. I hope that you will plan to be with us each week during September as we, together, offer our gift of worship to God.. Not only that, I hope that you will be faithful in inviting others to join with you in the worship experience. Pastor Dennis Brewer cell phone number church phone DEACONS FOR Our Nominating Committee is also in the process of filling positions that are important to our entire church family. If you would like to be involved in the ministry of your church, we have a place for you. Just let Fred Dodd, Chair of the Nominating Committee, know about your interest and areas in which you would be willing to help. Are You Involved? Several have taken the challenge of setting aside 40 days for prayer, witnessing, reading their Bible, meditating and inviting others to join us in worship. It s not too late to get involved. Just set aside a start date and then, for 40 days, and spend time each day drawing closer to God through personal spiritual growth and ministry to others. You will be amazed at the difference it will make in your life. GLEN RENFRO DO YOU RECEIVE OUR PASTOR S DAILY DEVOTIONAL? 5 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. (1 Corinthians 10:24-26) It is hard to believe that summer is over and the youth are back in school. We had a great summer and God blessed us with some wonderful weather for our events. I will tell you that I was very pleased with youth attendance during summer classes and activities. Here is a brief summary of summer activities; mission trip/cedarpoint, three local work days with great attendance, three pool party s picnics, ICHTHUS, bonfire and picnic, water blast picnic, and the dreaded lock-in. The Lord gave us great weather for all events, not one was hampered by rain or other inclement weather. We were really able to enjoy the renovated youth room during the lock-in as we watched a movie in there for the first time. It s been a long process but the room is nearly complete with just a few minor things to finish up. If you have not been down there lately you need to check it out. We have been blessed to have so much support in renovating this area. With school in session and the number of school activities our youth are involved in we are encouraging them to remain faithful in attendance. School activities are conflicting with some for Wednesday classes and weekend activities but we will plan several activities the best we can. Some things we are looking at for the fall are the Creation Museum, a canoe trip on the Elkhorn in Frankfort, an EKU football game and the Mystery Dinner Theatre. The last few weeks we have been studying the sacred and precious reality of human life and the tragic consequences of abortion, war and destructive behavior. We know as Genesis tells us that we were created in the image of God but the fall left us impaired when we think of the moral attributes and the power of reason and will. We need to continue to grow in our relationship with our Lord and Savior and we do that through continued study of His word, prayer and worship. We are encouraging daily Bible reading, church attendance and accountability partners. We know that as Paul wrote in Romans 7:18 that even after we develop a relationship with God that we do not lead perfect lives, I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Our lives are challenged with sin all around us and with our sinful nature we have to be continually on guard and working to grow more like Him. We are currently doing a study of the Gospel of John on Sunday nights. During the summer we did not do the nursing home ministry, the activities director had surgery which prevented us from going there. We have resumed that on one Wednesday night a month. We will again ask for help from the congregation in this ministry as we find ways to get everyone involved. Examples will be providing pumpkins to paint and decorations to cover doors at the nursing home. I will update you more on that later. Saturday, November 20 You want to put on your calendar the first Unity Youth Mystery Dinner. Our youth will be presenting a drama and dinner for you and your guests. I will provide more details in the near future but you want to get this on your calendar. (See below). Wrangle at Red Mountain Ranch A right lively crew heads out west to a real dude ranch. They are seeking to hash out their differences by living a cowboy s life and reenacting scenes from the Old West. Just as hope appears, several scalawags are caught lyin like a rug. One pilgrim retaliates by taking out the worst scoundrel of all. Who dun it? Why? And how d he or she pull it off? Blessings! John Youth Notes JOHN SMOOT, YOUTH MINISTER Rice Bowls Project Begins Sunday, September, 12 and sponsored by our Children s Ministry with Sherri Wilson Directing. You Will have an opportunity to participate.

7 Parcel s Page IN LOVING MEMORY OF UNITY S, ASSOCIATE PASTOR, PARCEL FLANNERY Perfect Girl? Manny was almost 29 years old. Most of his friends had already gotten married, and Manny just bounced from one relationship to the next. Finally a friend asked him, "What's the matter, are you looking for the perfect woman? Are you THAT particular? Can't you find anyone who suits you?" "No," Manny replied. "I meet a lot of nice girls, but as soon as I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like them. So I keep on looking!" "Listen," his friend suggested, "Why don't you find a girl who's just like your dear ole Mother?" Many weeks past before Manny and his friend got together again. 10. Your idea of weight lifting is standing up. 11. Your address book has mostly names that start with Dr. 12. The pharmacist has become your new best friend. 13. Getting "lucky" means you remember where you left your car in the parking lot. 14. The twinkle in your eye is merely a reflection from the sun on your bifocals. 15. It takes twice as long -- to look half as good. 16. Everything hurts, and what doesn't hurt -- doesn't work. 17. You sink your teeth into a steak -- and they stay there. 18. You wonder how you could be over the hill when you don't even remember being on top of it. 19. You have more hair in your ears and nose than on your head. 20. More than half of this list pertains to YOU! What is 3 times 3? "So Manny. Did you find the perfect girl yet. One that's just like your Mother?" Manny shrugged his shoulders, "Yes I found one just like Mom. My mother loved her, they became great friends." "Excellent!!! So,... Are you and this girl engaged, yet?" "I'm afraid not. My Father can't stand her!" You Know You Are Getting Older When.. 1. You and your teeth don't sleep together. 2. You try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks and discover you aren't wearing any. 3. At the breakfast table you hear snap, crackle, pop and you're not eating cereal. 4. Your back goes out but you stay home. 5. It takes two tries to get up from the couch. 6. Your idea of a night out is sitting on the patio. 7. You say something to your kids that your mother said to you, and you always hated it. 8. All you want for your birthday is to not be reminded of your age. 9. You step off a curb and look down one more time to make sure the street is still there. The doctor was administering a memory test to three old gentlemen. He asked, "What is 3 times 3?" The first old man replies, "One hundred and fifty six." The doctor turns to the second old man. "What's 3 times 3?" The second old man says, "Tuesday." The doctor then turns his attention to the third old man and asks him the same question; 'how much is 3 times 3?' The third old man answers, "Nine!." "And just how did you arrive at that answer?" the doctor asks. The third old man says, "Oh, that's easy, doc! I just subtracted Tuesday from 156 and I got nine."
