1 A Word from our Community Lay Director: DeColores brothers and sisters, Lagniappe Country Walk to Emmaus Fall 2013 Newsletter I scanned the previous letters by Community Lay Directors that are on our website in preparation for writing this. As I read about the challenges and successes of the past the thought occurred to me that our Community has been blessed with great leadership. These men and women have led us in good times and difficult times. That made me consider what goes into good leadership. The elements that came to mind are vision, dedication, a servant heart and joy. Vision: I start with vision because in order to lead you have to have direction and to have direction you have to see where you're going. Dedication: To survive dedication requires faith and trust. Our leaders have demonstrated all 3. Servant heart: I've been blessed to work alongside all the leaders who wrote letters for the posted newsletters so I can say firsthand that they are servants at heart. They washed the feet of all of us through the responsibility they accepted. Joy: Joy may be the most powerful of these traits. Who wants to follow a sourpuss? A smile and inner light will make the hardest, most distasteful task seem small. Think of each of these people and you'll recall each of them has a beautiful smile and a light in their eyes regardless of the place or time. The purpose of these comments is not to glorify the past (or present) leadership or even thank them for they have received their reward. The Upper Room Daily Devotion Thought for the Day for today (July 17) put it best. "The footprints of others can guide us in our walk of faith." Our Lord Jesus is ultimately the example we should use to guide us. I pray this will be true for you as we join together to serve the Pilgrims of Walks 68 & 69 so they see our efforts to be the face of Christ to them on their walk of faith and will have a guide that inspires them to lead others to our Lord. 2 A WORD FROM OUR LAY DIRECTORS From the Lay Director Lagniappe Country Walk to Emmaus #68 To my brothers and sisters in Christ s service, Our team is complete as far as the conference room is concerned. We have had our third and final team preparation meeting. We know God has called an effective group together to represent Him during this weekend retreat where Pilgrims selected by God will come together to learn more about fostering his Kingdom with their service. We have chosen as our Scripture to guide us, the Great Commission, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28: This, I believe, is what our Emmaus Walk is about. We will strive to live this during our preparation, Walk, and 4 th Day. We solicit your Prayers for the Team as well as for the Pilgrims. You have honored me immensely by inviting me to act as Lay Director for this Walk # 68. I have accepted the invitation even as it humbles me. I do recognize this: Not one action is possible if we forget that It s not about me. It s God s Walk and this team has been asked to be helpers. So---let s go be helpers. DeColores L. N. Coxe From the Lay Director Lagniappe Country Walk to Emmaus #69 To my Sisters and Brothers in Christ, What a great JOY and blessing it is to be serving with this amazing team that God has put together for Walk #69. The team is focused and prepared to be Christ s hands and feet in service to the group of women that God has called to be Pilgrims on Walk #69. The team s scripture is from Romans 12:12 Be JOYful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. We are praying that the entire LCWE community, along with the conference room team and behind-the-scenes servants, remain filled with JOY throughout the entire weekend, as we faithfully and purposefully live out our team motto by putting Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last. I am humbled by and thank you for your prayers, support, and trust in allowing me to serve as the Lay Director for Walk #69. I pray that everything that occurs this entire weekend be to the glory of God, as well as a blessing and grace to the Pilgrims. De Colores! Theresa Sandifer
3 OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE One of the foundations of the Walk to Emmaus experience is servanthood. It is through servanthood that we experience anew, the joy and excitement of the weekend. You don t have to be on conference room team to be a major part of the weekend experience. The support role is the engine that drives the weekend. By contributing your time and talents, the weekend flows smoothly and everyone can experience the presence of God. Not just the pilgrims...everyone! How can I serve?... PRAYER - Pray for the pilgrims. Pray for the team. Visit to sign up for the prayer vigil. Come to the Prayer Room at least 30 minutes before each talk and pray for the speaker (times of the talks are listed on page 5). Pray at home, pray at work,...pray without ceasing! Contact Sally Genovese for more information. KITCHEN - Why is working in the kitchen during the weekend so much fun? Is it the fellowship, the sense of creating, or just the experience of serving? Whatever it is, it is essential. Your contribution is both needed and appreciated. Contact Pat Powers for more information. ATLARS - The altar arrangements throughout the weekend are an inspirational part of each visit to the sanctuary. Help out for one arrangement, a day or the whole weekend! Contact Danny Brouillette to find out how you can help. FACILITIES - The weekend involves a lot of setting up, taking down, moving, picking up and putting away. Your help is needed! Thursday Morning - starting at 6:00 AM, set up Conference Room, sleeping areas, Prayer and Dining Rooms. Saturday evening - after Candlelight - move Conference Room. Sunday Morning - arrive by 6:30 AM to convert sleeping areas back to Sunday School rooms. Sunday evening - after Closing to restore the Broadmoor Campus to pre-walk condition. Contact Bart Kennedy for more information. AGAPE - Oven agape is a sweet, warm way to spread God's love. Bring homemade oven agape to the kitchen on Thursday of the Walks. - OR - The upcoming walks will need 60 agape items for each weekend. Some articles are tried and true, but new ones are always welcome. God's favorite hobby is creating, so get Him in on the planning! Contact Ron Agnew for more information TEAM ASSISTANT - Learn how the conference room gets set up, rearranged during breaks, cleaned up and taken down during the weekend. Team Assistant is a vital part of the Walk and is loads of fun too. Won t you help? Contact Duane Denham for more information CANDLELIGHT and CLOSING - What experiences they are! An opportunity to worship and to demonstrate community spirit to the pilgrims. REMEMBER, CANDLELIGHT IS AT 8:00 PM ON SATURDAY AND CLOSING IS AT 4:00 PM ON SUNDAY!...Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to the least of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me. Matthew 25:40 Do we have your address? If you have an address, but haven t been receiving communication from us, go to the LCWE web site, click on the Contact Us link, and fill out the form with your information. Or us at LCWEnews@gmail.com with your name, walk number, preferred address. The web site also has pilgrim applications, team service applications (don t forget to fill out annually), links to prayer vigil signup, the community calendar, detailed gathering information, and information on sponsorship and reunion groups. CAMPUS TOURS We will once again be hosting tours of the Broadmoor/Emmaus campus during the walk to familiarize community members with the various service areas and opportunities. The tour will begin after Sponsor s Hour on Thursday night (meet at sanctuary) of each walk. Especially if you ve never experienced the Behind the Scenes activity, you won t want to miss this exciting opportunity. Wear your walking shoes and come find out where all the servants hang out! After the 30 minute tour, you ll be well-equipped to just show up and get to work on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday of any walk.
