2 April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday of Lent (A) Ez 37:12 14 Rom 8:8 11 Jn 11:1 45 Our Resurrection Piece: The Resurrection of Lazarus, 1946 Artist: Pietro Annigoni Location: Vatican Museums T he raising of Lazarus is a decisive miracle in Christ s public ministry. It leads to increased hostility and gives the Jewish leaders both an excuse and a motivation to actively seek the death of Jesus. This Gospel episode is so important that John dedicates an entire chapter to the story. What is the most important message of this miracle? Without faith in Jesus, there is no resurrection. A fitting message for an artist painting in Europe right after World War II. Looking at the painting of Annigoni, Mary is at the feet of Jesus while Martha is on her feet pouring out her heart. The artist evokes a landscape of death and destruction, one too often observed in postwar Europe. Colors of decay abound. Stones are piled up like rubble. The trees are burnt, scrawny, and twisted as if after an air raid. It is ugly, rugged, barren, and dry. A small group of people have gathered to weep at the tomb. Jesus is the only source of color and life. After Martha affirms her faith in Jesus and the resurrection, he lifts up his hand and calls out. The onlookers peer inside, perhaps having heard the sounds of rustling coming from the cave. The message of this artwork is clear to anyone struggling with the bondage of a destructive past. Jesus wants to speak words of life and raise us from the grips of death, war, and despair. Believe in Jesus and he will raise you up! Fr. Mark Haydu, LC For Reflection How is your Lenten journey bringing you deeper in faith and closer to new life in Jesus? Has Jesus raised you from destruction or despair? How? If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you (Romans 8:11).

Hellfire and brimstone recalls Genesis 19:24: The Lord rained down sulfur upon Sodom and Gomorrah, fire from the Lord out of heaven. It refers to a harsh preaching style and doom and gloom content focused on God s wrath, punishment, and hell. Puritans those English Calvinists who colonized Massachusetts in the 1600s adhered strongly to their belief in eternal damnation, innate sin, and diabolical power. Likewise, American Baptists were known to out-calvin Calvin in their preaching. While Catholics also adhere strongly to our belief in the possibility of eternal damnation, innate sin, and evil forces, we believe in the grace of baptism to remove original sin, the outpouring of God s grace to strengthen our weakness due to original sin, and in the extraordinary power of conversion to prevent everlasting damnation. To that end, parish missions and revivals strengthen the spiritual life of the faithful and welcome lapsed Catholics. Preaching orders have been conducting missions since their earliest days in America. Saint Alphonsus encouraged his Redemptorist missionaries to be lions in the pulpit and lambs in the confessional. One preacher in the 1850s described the fires of hell with such intensity that the nearby fire engine crew was mistakenly dispatched to the church to extinguish the conflagration. Yet the fire most desirable during a mission is the one in people s hearts for God. Fear of God means a dread for God s judgment, but it can also mean a reverential marvel for God. Many preachers today prefer to instill that awe for God s inviting mercy instead of a paralyzing fear of God s anger. Fr. Byron Miller, CSsR sundaybulletin@liguori.org A Word From Pope Francis Whoever experiences [the joy of the Resurrection] becomes a witness of the Resurrection...He or she is then capable of carrying a ray of light of the Risen One into various situations,...bringing serenity and hope.
