2 June 11, 2017 Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Ex 34:4b 6, Cor 13:11 13 Jn 3:16 18 Salvation s Cost I n the painting The Trinity With the Dead Christ, we see a meditation on the Trinity in a hidden moment. Rather than paint the moment when Mary takes her Son into her arms, Ludovico Carracci painted the moment when the heavenly Father receives the spoils of his Son s battle for the salvation of humanity. The dark colors communicate the pathos and drama. The Father s head turns away in grief even as he offers the Son. He reverently holds him yet almost fears to touch his pierced hands. See how much love God shows in allowing the Son to go to the cross, in sacrificing one beloved child to gain life for all his others. Theology struggles to balance the truth of a loving, caring God the Father with the appreciation that he is unable to suffer as we do. Yet Carracci focuses on that popular intuition that the Father and the Spirit suffered the death of the Son. In this painting, we can reflect on what our salvation cost the Trinity and how much love they show in sending the Son to die. God suffers when you suffer and wishes to console and protect you, even if, as a good Father, he doesn t remove the suffering. Faith teaches us that God willed his only begotten Son to suffer and die to save humanity. This divine decision manifests justice and mercy. It shows not only that God actually required satisfaction for our sins but also that no one but a God-man could offer a suitable sacrifice. Should we hold hands, lift our hands up, or pray to ourselves? Among many ancient religions, it was common to extend one s hands toward heaven while praying. This practice has continued in the Mass, where the rubrics indicate that the priest should extend his hands at certain points, including during the Our Father. The celebrant represents all the people with this gesture. When there are concelebrating priests, the rubrics ask them to also extend their hands in prayer during the Our Father. But the invitation to hold one s hands up in prayer stops there. The deacon is expressly forbidden to hold his hands up in prayer. A Christian assembly that worships with one heart and soul (Acts 4:32) naturally moves toward and consciously chooses a common posture as a sign of its unity. Such common posture both expresses and fosters the intention and spiritual attitude of the participants (28). The gestures at Mass are not as important as the essence of the Mass, and part of that essence is our unity in the body of Christ. That should be our main concern. Rev. We often take for granted the little luxuries such as sunlight, that few people are given the right experience. Koko s Farewell to All Saint s and CSU East Bay Campus Ministry Kolyne De Jesus will be graduating on June 9th from California State University, East Bay with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She will go on to get her Master of Arts in Teaching, from the University of Portland. She will go on to serve underserved minority students as a middle school Science teacher. May God bless her in her journey. Where do I even start? I think I ll take it back to the first time I ever walked into our campus ministry center. It was during the beginning of my third year in college. One of my friends in Catholic club invited me to come to the center for their weekly Thursday, Feeding Faith where other college students in the club gather together, share a meal, check in about our lives and then end the evening with a faith discussion on a topic together. I remember sitting at the table with everyone and seeing a plate full of homemade food by different students, and how long ago my family and I have had a meal together. I felt so grateful at that moment and wanted to give back somehow. So after the faith discussion, I went straight to the kitchen of the center and just started washing dishes. Little did I know, that was the first night that would change my spiritual and college journey forever. Throughout the past three years of being in Catholic club, I learned so much. I learned how to proactively let others treat me how I want to be treated, especially in my family, I learned how to be resourceful (with food too, of course) and to live my life in my most authentic self, because God loves me. I also learned the importance of community and the strength in relationships. College was a difficult five years of my life, but with Catholic club I wouldn t have survived or known about my gifts, met some of the greatest people, and been able to discern my calling to me a Science teacher. So what s next for me? Well, I ll be packing my bags and heading to Portland, Oregon for my Master s in Teaching and then teach middle school Science for underserved, minority students. I ll definitely be bringing what I learned from my family, Catholic club, and those who ve influenced me to the new chapter and adventures ahead! I m very thankful for CSUEB Catholic club and the All Saints community, because just like this photo of my friends in the club hugging me -- I know God has my back and I ll always be surrounded by love, no matter where I go. - Kolyne De Jesus (Koko)
