By the time the interminable Gloria is sung, I already have a headache! Why so much music? At Mass, the faithful form one body, whether in hearing the Word of God, or in taking part in the prayers and in the singing, or above all by the common offering of the Sacrifice and by participating together at the Lord s table (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 96). Thus, liturgical music can be a form of prayer, uniting the assembly in praise to God. Ideally, it s a particularly apt way to express a joyful heart, accentuating the solemnity of the celebration and fostering the sense of a common faith and a shared love (On Keeping the Lord s Day Holy [Dies Domini], 50) by Pope John Paul II. However, this ideal isn t always reality. To address your question, let us divide humanity into two groups: people who like to sing and people who don t; those who sing in full voice in the shower and those who prefer monastic silence. Every congregation includes both groups. While not everyone is naturally inclined to make a joyful noise, most people appreciate music s power to give voice to what s deep in the human heart. Some may even feel there s not enough music at Mass instead of too much. Nevertheless, happy the liturgical ministers who know when the sum of the individual Mass parts sung or otherwise can become too tedious. And blessed are the music makers who know the power of silence, an instrumental, or an optional recessional song, even for solemn occasions. Fr. February Black History Month On the Road to Sainthood: Leaders of African Descent (USCCB) Julia Greeley ( ) was born into slavery in Hannibal, Missouri, sometime between At an early age, she suffered at the hands of a slave owner, who destroyed her right eye while beating her mother. She was freed by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and entered the Catholic while in Colorado, receiving the sacrament of baptism in As a lay Franciscan, closely affiliated with the Jesuits at her parish, she was actively involved in promoting the faith and devotion to the Sacred Heart. She became known by her acts of charity and mercy to those living on the margins of society, in spite of living in extreme poverty herself. Greeley died in Fr. Augustus Tolton ( )... Augustus Tolton was the first Roman Catholic priest in the United States publicly known to be black when he was ordained in A former slave who was baptized and reared Catholic. Tolton led the development and construction of St. Monica s Catholic as a black National Parish, completed in Venerable Pierre Toussaint ( )... Venerable Pierre Toussaint was born a slave in Haiti. Philanthropist & Founder of many Catholic charitable works. As a slave, Venerable Pierre Toussaint was brought from Haiti to New York and apprenticed under a popular hairstylist in the city. He eventually became the most sought after hairdresser of high society women. Upon the death of his master, he gained his freedom and was very successful as one of the country s first black entrepreneurs. He founded one of New York s first orphanages and raised money for the city s first cathedral.
