6 After almost 1 year of prayer, discernment, meetings, and more prayer, we decided that we were being called to sponsor a refugee family, through Catholic Charities of the East Bay. We as a people of faith, had been called by Pope Francis and Bishop Barber to reach out and sponsor a family during the Divine Year of Mercy. What an incredible night of joy, peace, love, hope and the feeling of God being present in every aspect of the evening. At right around 12:00 midnight, we welcomed our refugee family at the Oakland Airport on Jan. 23. Dorie Ravara, Lucy Lopez, Deborah Johnson, Mari Kriege, Minnie McEllhatton and I, along with two members of Catholic Charites, were present to meet the family. Also, a family friend from their original home village was there, which made for a happy reunion for all of them, and offered the family a certain degree of comfort. We were all very excited and anxious as we sat in the waiting area for the plane to arrive. I was like an expectant father, pacing the floor, and the women where making sure they had all the toys, flowers, balloons and cameras working and ready to go. When we saw the family coming down through the hallway, we just knew it was them. For me it brought great peace, to realize that we had answered God s call, and that we as a church have the ability to change a family s life forever. Mangal is the father and he speaks very good English. Nazifa is the mother, and the children are Omra aged 7, Marwa aged 5, Eqra aged 3 and Osman aged 17 months. Mangal is very grateful for what we have done to bring his family to America for a better life for his children. He is certainly overwhelmed with all that has happened in such a short amount of time. Their journey to the United States, took them 2-1/2 days, but they have been working with the US Government and Catholic Charities for almost 3 years to get approved to come. Mangal worked with the US Armed Forces in Afghanistan for many years. Mangal is very anxious to get a job, get their children enrolled in school and start their new life in America. We arrived with toys for the children, Tulips for mom, which by the way are the National flower of Afghanistan, balloons and a welcome sign. The children were very hesitant to receive our toys at first, but dad spoke to them in their native language and told them it was okay and they smiled and welcomed them eagerly.

7 Dad and mom, show their respect and thanks by lightly tap their hearts. It is a beautiful expression of their appreciation. We have been working very closely with Catholic Charities for the past year, and will continue to do so during this transition time for the family. As the lives of the family have been changed, our lives as Christian people of faith will be changed as well. In Matthew s gospel, Chapter 25, Verse 40, we are told, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine you did for me. We at All Saints have heard that call and now because of our saying yes, are truly living the Gospel. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donations of money, furniture, clothing, household items, prayers and support. To the wonderful group of people whom have supported us on this journey, Thank you for saying Yes to God s call from the very beginning. You gave me strength and hope to continue to move forward.
