4 PRAISELINE 27 JAN 2019 Stay fresh as you serve this year Richard Sweatman This ar4cle is taken from GOTHEREFOR.COM, 7 January 2019 How are you feeling about your ministries at church this year? In the life cycle of my church, the start of the year is when many of us recommit to areas of serving. Some4mes, especially if we re returning to ministries we ve been doing for a while, we can feel less than enthusias4c. Another year of teaching rowdy kids? Another year of leading a small group of complex people? Another year of coaxing a half-hearted congrega4on into singing? We can feel like the mythical King Sisyphus who was condemned by Zeus to eternally roll a boulder up a hill only for it to slip and roll back to the bouom every 4me. Will this be our experience this year? Happily, it needn t be so. God has given us great teaching in the Bible to help us think rightly about repe44ve ministry. In addi4on, I think there are a few (biblically informed) strategies that can keep us fresh and enthusias4c as we serve. The big idea from the Bible is that our ministries (whatever they might be) are a giz not a punishment. Just as we have received God s gracious gizs of forgiveness, jus4fica4on and adop4on through Christ, so also have we received the giz of ministry. Paul had this perspec4ve. His apostolic ministry was given him by the mercy of God (2 Cor 4:1) and he was thankful that God appointed him to his service (1 Tim 1:12). He puts it plainly in Ephesians: To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gen4les the unsearchable riches of Christ (Eph 3:8). He saw his ministry as a blessing, even though it was incredibly hard. But why was he so posi4ve about it, even though it cost him his freedom and comfort? The main thing, I think, was that Paul saw it as a great honour to be entrusted by God with a significant task. Being entrusted with something (the gospel, a stewardship, preaching, etc.) is how he ozen described his ministry (1 Cor 9:17; Gal 2:7; 1 Thess 2:4; 1 Tim 1:11; Titus 1:3) and for him, this, in itself, was a reason for thankfulness. In our western culture we no longer think a great deal about honour, but for Paul it was a great honour and privilege to serve his mighty God and Saviour. Secondly, Paul saw what a posi4ve impact his ministry had. His explained that his work brings righteousness (2 Cor 3:9) and ul4mately brings glory to God: For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God (2 Cor 4:15). If anyone made a difference in this world it was Paul in his gospel ministry. Serving, for him, was a giz not a punishment. Our ministries, though not the same as Paul s, are s4ll a gracious giz. According to 1 Peter we are to be good stewards of God s varied grace, using whatever gizs we have received to serve others (1 Pet 4:10). Archippus, a friend of Paul s in Colossae, was urged to fulfil the ministry he had received in the Lord (Col 4:17). We may not feel it all the 4me, but it is an honour to serve God; our ministries 4
5 PRAISELINE 27 JAN 2019 do bring about good for people and glory to God. If we can think in this way, rather than with an aitude of begrudging obliga4on, we will find fresh enthusiasm for the hard work ahead of us. With those big ideas from the Bible in mind, what other strategies can we use to stay fresh in ministry? 1. Recover a thankfulness for your ministry. List out the many things about your par4cular ministry that you are thankful for. This could include things like the opportunity itself, the team you work with, the fun and joy you ve had from it, or the reward of seeing things go well (at 4mes). Thankfulness some4mes requires deliberate thought. While listening to the cricket this summer I heard one of the commentators speak about how he always tried to be posi4ve about playing cricket for Australia. No mauer how hard the situa4on was he always reminded himself that spending his 4me playing a game he loved for his country was a privilege and he was thankful for the opportunity. We can do the same with our ministries. 2. Recover a prayerfulness about the ministry. Ministry seems an even heavier burden when we tackle it alone. Remind yourself that all ministry we do is in partnership with God and we express this partnership primarily through prayer. As I reflect on my upcoming year, the things I feel least enthusias4c about are the things for which I have rarely prayed. I need to be faithful in prayer for all my ministries. 3. Try to improve on last year. It s a common trap in ministry to just go through the mo4ons. We are familiar with professional development at work or skill development with hobbies. My kids are commended at school for having a growth mindset. We can do the same in ministry. Try to do beuer compared to last year. Consider reading a book about your ministry, going to a conference, or trying something new. As a simple example, I m hoping to find and learn a new song for the kindergarten Scripture class I teach. 4. Start training someone this year. I ve ozen seen people in church ministries invigorated by training someone to do what they ve been doing for years. There s something exci4ng about having a new person on the team who is interested and curious about how things work. It s rewarding to see them grow in their skills and confidence and some4mes end up doing beuer than you. Pray that God might provide a trainee and try to find one (with your pastor s help if need be). It will make for a beuer year. The start of the year can be a tough 4me as we brace ourselves for all the hard work ahead. But ministry and serving need not be a drag. Remember Paul s perspec4ve on the blessing of ministry it s a giz not a punishment and try these strategies as soon as you can. This year could be your best yet. Richard Sweatman Richard Sweatman is the Pastor for Maturity at Hunter Bible Church, Newcastle. Part of his job is overseeing the Growth Group ministry. He is the author of Being a Small Group Leader and Wri4ng a Small Group Study, both published by MaUhias Media. 5

We put together this handbook to provide information and resources that will help you disciple your family in Living Praise. It is our privilege to join you in gospelling your children in the knowledge and love of Jesus. Let us rely on the gospel fully even as we seek to pass on this gospel to our children and our children s children. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done. 10 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 27 JAN 2019 Question 4 How and why did God create us? God created us male and female in his own image to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify him. And it is right that we who were created by God should live to his glory. Introducing the New City Catechism: 52 Questions and Answers for our Hearts and Minds Christians have used catechisms throughout the history of the church. It is with great joy and expectation that we are introducing and commending the New City Catechism to Living Praise in our mission to know, love and enjoy God forever. The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith via 52 questions and answers. The teachings are related to God, human nature, sin, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and more. Living Praise plans to learn this catechism 1 question per week, going through it in a year. The New City Catechism is available free on the mobile app for iphone, ipad and Android devices. With the app, you can switch quickly between children s and adult s mode, read the related passage and short commentary, learn the song and use the suggested prayer. Very helpful app to download! All 52 songs (lyric videos) are available on Youtube. Is Catechism A Biblical Practice? In his letter to the Galatians Paul writes, Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches (Gal. 6:6). The Greek word for the one who is taught is katechoumenos, one who is catechised. In other words, Paul is talking about a body of Christian doctrine (catechism) that was taught to them by an instructor (here the word *catechiser*). The words all good things probably mean financial support as well. In this light, the word koinoneo which means to share or to have fellowship becomes even richer. The salary of a Christian teacher is not to be seen simply as a payment but a fellowship. Catechesis is not just one more service to be paid for, but is a rich fellowship and mutual sharing of the gifts of God. If we re-engage in this biblical practice in our churches, we will find again God s Word dwelling in us richly (see Col. 3:16), because the practice of catechesis takes truth deep into our hearts, so we think in biblical categories as soon as we can reason or simply search the new city catechism 3 Timothy Keller, Introduction, Insert 2
11 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 27 JAN 2019 Catechisms have been used for centuries to train children and adults in their gospel faith. May God help us in Living Praise to love Jesus more truly, trust Jesus more deeply and follow Jesus more whole heartedly, as we learn from the New City Catechism. More Questions and Answers About The New City Catechism What s A Catechism? In the early Christian centuries a catechism (from the Greek word meaning teaching ) was a body of Bible truths to be taught to children and new converts. The form developed into a series of questions and answers, often to be recited aloud and committed to memory. The Reformation saw numbers of catechisms produced, and a good number of them are still used around the world today, as they put essential gospel teaching in clear and memorable language. Why Catechise? The Westminster catechism opens with this question, What is the chief end of man? Answer. Man s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. Catechism is a practice that will help Living Praise in our mission to know, love and enjoy God forever. A catechism is an excellent way of helping people to engage with and reflect on Christian truth. Pithily worded questions and answers lodge in the mind and sink into the heart. Who Catechises? The Westminster Shorter Catechism was published in Over one hundred pastors and educators met in London for sessions of study and conversation in order to frame doctrinal statements and directives for church government that they hoped would serve the national church in Great Britain. The achievements from the eventual ten years of meetings were far-reaching: the gatherings (known collectively as the Westminster Assembly), produced a confession of faith, two catechisms, and documents on public worship and church government. These have formed the governing documents of almost every English-speaking Presbyterian church, and have been used across the world since their first publication. Arguable the most used of them today is the Shorter Catechism. Why Then The New City Catechism? There are many ancient, excellent, and time-tested catechisms. Why expend the effort to write new ones? In fact, some people might suspect the motives of anyone who would want to do so. However, most people today do not realise that it was once seen as normal, important, and necessary for churches to continually produce new catechisms for their own use. 4 Lewis Allen, The Preacher s Catechism, p.21 5 Ibid. 6 Ibid. 12 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 27 JAN 2019 The original Anglican Book of Common Prayer included a catechism. The Lutheran churches had Luther's Large Catechism and Small Catechism of The early Scottish churches, though they had Calvin s Geneva Catechism of 1541 and the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563, went on to produce and use Craig s Catechism of 1581, Duncan s Latin Catechism of 1595, and the New Catechism of 1644, before eventually adopting the Westminster Catechism. Catechisms were written with at least three purposes: 1. To set forth a comprehensive exposition of the gospel 2. To address and counter heresies, errors, and false beliefs of the time and culture 3. To form a distinct people, a counter culture that reflected the likeness of Christ What Is The New City Catechism Based On? The New City Catechism is based on and adapted from Calvin s Geneva Catechism, the Westminster Shorter and Larger catechisms, and especially the Heidelberg Catechism. This gives good exposure to some of the riches and insights across the spectrum of the great Reformation-era catechisms, the hope being that it will encourage people to delve into the historic catechisms and continue the catechetical process throughout their lives. What Is The Structure Of The New City Catechism? The New City Catechism comprises only 52 questions and answers (as opposed to Heidelberg s 129 or Westminster Shorter s 107). There is only one question and answer for each week of the year, making it simple to fit into our church calendar and achievable for people with demanding schedules. It is divided into three parts to make it easier to learn in sections and to include some helpful divisions: Part 1: God, creation and fall, law (twenty questions) Part 2: Christ, redemption, grace (fifteen questions) Part 3: Spirit, restoration, growing in grace (seventeen questions) 7 Keller 8 Ibid. 9 Ibid. 10 Ibid. 13 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 27 JAN 2019 What is the Holy Communion? Look up in thanksgiving to God Look back to Jesus body broken and blood shed for us on the cross (1 Cor 11:23-25) Holy Communion Look forward to Jesus return (1 Cor 11:26) Look within as we reflect on our behaviour towards the body of Christ purchased by his blood (1 Cor 11:27-29) Look around to our participation with Christ and the unity of God s people (1 Cor 10:16-17) All Christians may partake in the Holy Communion. We take the bread and cup in remembrance of Jesus (Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:26-29). How so? Well, the Holy Communion is essentially a visual display of the gospel in these ways: - it shows our relationship with God (1 Cor 11:25 - it reminds us of God's covenant, or promise, first given to Abraham and renewed in Jesus) - it pictures Jesus' death to restore us to God, his body broken and blood shed for us on the cross (1 Cor 11:23-25) - it awaits Jesus' return (1 Cor 11:26) - it is to be taken by those with a respectful and believing attitude towards Jesus' death for us (1 Cor 11:27-29) - it represents our unity with Christ and with one another as God's people (1 Cor 10:16-17, 1 Cor 11:33-34) So, next Sunday, as we come to the Holy Communion: let's prepare our hearts and minds, trusting in Christ alone, not in whether we have been "good enough". Christ has already made us right with God. If there is sin in our lives, let s confess our sin to God and change, being confident that the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin let's seek reconciliation if we have broken fellowship with and/or acted wrongly towards any brother or sister in Christ Holy Communion Equipping on 28 April 2019 We invite you all to come for either session at 2pm where - You will be helped to better understand the Holy Communion - Parents will be equipped to teach it to our children May this enable us to joyfully celebrate and partake in the Lord s Supper in love and unity.
