1 Bulletin #1512 May 20, 2018 From The Minister s Pen If Baptism Is Not Essential for Salvation, Why? aptism is a much discussed subject as B well as a much misunderstood subject. Countless people hold the false belief that baptism is not essential for salvation. If baptism is not essential for man s salvation Why did Peter tell those gathered on the day of Pentecost: Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38)? Jesus said of the fruit of the vine, For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins (Matt. 26:28). When we connect these passages, we observe that Peter stated, be baptized...for the remission of sins, and our Lord said that His blood was shed for the remission of sins. To say that one does not have to be baptized to be saved is to say that Christ s blood did not have to be shed. In other words, it is saying that Jesus died in vain. Why did Peter command Cornelius and his household to be baptized (Acts 10:48)? If man is not required to be baptized to obtain salvation, Peter again gave a command that is not necessary. This would diminish God s instruction for man s righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16-17) to a level where man could ask Why concerning any divine command, and refuse to obey. Why did Ananias instruct Paul, And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 22:16)? Many people hold the erroneous idea that all one has to do is believe in Christ to have salvation; but, Paul believed, having encountered the Lord on the way to Damascus (Acts 22:6-8). Yet, Ananias later told Paul to be baptized to have his sins washed away. This clearly teaches that Paul s sins had not been forgiven prior to his baptism, and it necessarily teaches that neither are ours today. Why do all of the examples of conversion in the book of Acts mention baptism as a necessary process in man s conversion? Did God include a part in those
2 Page 2 examples that was unnecessary? Some people seem to think that God should have contacted man as to how the sinner should be converted. It is called God s plan of salvation for a reason. The Almighty made the rules, He wrote the Book of salvation, and it is without error! Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32). John 17:17 teaches,...thy word is truth. Since God was is the one offended by sin and since He is all just, only He has the right and the prerogative to demand the steps of obedience. Why did our Lord say, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved (Mark 16:16)? Why did Peter pen this truth, baptism doth also now save us (1 Peter 3:21)? Why? Because God greatly desires that all men be saved (1 Tim. 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9), and He has told us how to be saved in His inspired Word. It is up to us to take His Word into our hearts and apply it in our lives. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4). Other passages on the essentiality of baptism could be noticed, but space will not permit. However, in the verses that have been covered, it is crystal clear that one must be baptized for the remission of sins, to have salvation. Let us not allow the subtlety of Satan to lead us away from the simplicity that is in Christ (2 Cor. 11:3). God s Picture of the Church The Bible vividly portrays the nature of the church in the various descriptive terms which are applied: 1. As a pearl, the church is costly. It is to be bought even at the expense of selling all that one has. 2. As a kingdom, it is obedient. We are to obey every wish of our King, the Lord. 3. As a house, it is orderly. Every stone is fitly joined together and everything is decent and in order. 4. As a rock, it is dependent. It must be fed the pure milk and meat of the Word. It must look to the great Shepherd. 5. As a bride, it is vitally joined to Him. It wears His name and is subject to Him in all things. 6. As a family, it bears His image. It resembles the Father and Elder Brother (Jesus Christ). 7. As a body, it is united. All members are needed and work together in harmony. 8. As a candlestick, it is exalted. It is the light of the world, reflecting Christ so that all can see Him.

Can one seek the kingdom first and refuse or neglect his class? Those who hunger and thirst for God s way shall be filled (Matt. 5:6). One who craves more spiritual nourishment will be in Bible class. God wants you to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord (2 Pet. 3:18). We cannot grow in His favor without growing in His knowledge. Your Bible class helps you to do this.
