1 Bulletin #1498 February 11, 2018 From The Minister s Pen Black History Month [Part 2] MY SPIRITUAL SONS/DAUGHTERS his month, since 1974, has been T celebrated as Black History Month. It began, however, in 1926 when Carter G. Woodson first introduced Black History Week. I have a word from God to all my sons and daughters here at the Heights. In one of my sermons, Chained To The Chariot, I mention the formula for success in the following verses: Be strong and courageous for you are the ones who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning neither to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this book of instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. [Josh. 1:6-9, NLT] This is the true formula for success. Please highlight it in your Bible and remember how to have true success! During this month of African- American consciousness, the parents of our children should know that we are also included. Allow me to refer you to a word from God. I call attention again to the ancient words of Joshua as he reminds us parents to keep telling the truth: The people [Israel] crossed the Jordan on the tenth of the first month... It was there that Joshua piled up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan River. Then Joshua said to the Israelites, In the future your children will ask What do these stones mean? Then you can tell them, This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground. For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and He kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea when he dried it up until we had all crossed over. He did this

2 so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord s had is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever. [Josh. 4:19-24, NLT] Joshua, successor to the great Jewish prophet Moses, is saying to those Jewish parents, Tell them the truth. Black History Month is a time for black parents to tell our children the truth. TELL THEM: On Sunday morning in 1963 in Birmingham, AL, four little girls were killed when a bomb detonated beneath their historically black church. TELL THEM: Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., in his eulogy of the little girls, said that We must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers TELL THEM: On March 7, 1965 on the Edmund Pettis Bridge, on Sunday peaceful African-Americans who marched across that bridge were brutally halted by Alabama state troopers on horse back who charged the peaceful marchers, beating them with clubs and injuring 50. TELL THEM: That any people who are ignorant of their history are doomed to repeat it. Finally, as I ve mentioned before: Stay in school, develop a God-centered mindset. Believe in your own dignity, your worth and your own Page 2 individualism. I ve quoted before, and I again quote, The Parable of the Street Sweeper. If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leonardo DaVinci painted pictures, sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well! Be reminded of the great apostle Paul in his treatise to the church in Colossians chapter 3: Whatever you do, or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father [NLT]. Our church, as a people, join the celebration of African-American History Month with the prayer that God may grant us energy to work toward the equality and unity that He desires. And, may we [all] as a people see ourselves as one people with a nervous system that makes us feel the pain of one another. [WFW]
