1 Bulletin #1462 May 28, 2017 From The Minister s Pen Challenges in the Days of Youth Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart (2 Tim. 2:22). Every generation must be taught and appreciate the same principles for living. Though advances in technology, medicine, transportation, etc., come over time; some things simply do not change. There are basic human challenges that face every generation. Youth today face the same obstacles that their parents and grandparents did in the days of their youth. It is vital that the youth of today learn the lessons early to meet the challenges for themselves and to help the youth of tomorrow, if the Lord wills there to be a tomorrow. The opposites of righteousness, faith, charity, and peace are wickedness, skepticism, hate, and discord. These problems have plagued the world since sin entered in Genesis chapter 3 and will continue to be a challenge to humanity. Consider some other challenges which are especially challenging to youth. Acceptance. Though every young man and young woman wants to have their own identity, they also want to have a sense of belonging. Striving to be accepted by one s peers is a pressure which can drive people to do any number of things. The scriptures give great warning about seeking to please the masses. The law of Moses stressed, Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil (Exo. 23:2). Jesus Himself said, Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat (Matt. 7:13). When it comes to the matter of acceptance, the question must always be asked, Who am I seeking to please? Respect comes from taking a stand, as a leader, for what is right. Joshua said, And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Josh. 24:). It does not take much character to bend with every trend that comes around. It must always be remembered that the world is not going to accept true righteousness. It must also be remembered that those who do respect and follow true righteousness are the ones to whom we should draw close. If one has a

2 hundred peers who love him and yet are doers of unrighteousness, the human tendency is to compromise and give in to the group. Paul wrote, Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners (1 Cor. :33). Seek to be a good influence toward everyone but a follower of the Lord supremely. It must be remembered that those who do respect and follow true righteousness are the ones to whom we should draw close. Affluence. Man today lives in a material world that values what can be seen above all else. Though it is true that individuals must have some type of financial income in order to function in this life (Eccl. 7:12; 1 Tim. 5:8), one must also learn that abundance alone does not make real living. Jesus said, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth (Luke 12:). Every child of God must come to learn the lesson that Paul addressed, when he said, Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me (Phil. 4:11-13). Paul knew that regardless of the outward circumstances, putting one s trust in the Lord is more important than anything else. The glory of things catches the eyes of young and old alike. All must learn that the glories of the material are nothing compared to the glory of what is eternal (2 Cor. 4:18; Rom. 8:18). Man is but a steward to use God s benefits to honor Page 2 Him. Such will benefit in more ways than the world knows. Amusement. The majority of today s youth live in somewhat of a carefree world where many of the serious decisions of life are handled by parents or guardians. If youth do not develop a sense of responsibility through work and obligations, then life seems to be one big entitlement. There is a place for fun (Eccl. 3:4; 5:18). However, life is not all fun and games (Eccl. 2:1-11). There is no place for fun at the expense of someone else (Prov. 26:18-19). One must remember that though sin has its pleasure, it also has its penalties (Eccl. 11:9-10). Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him (Eccl. 8:12). Sin has its pleasure, it also has its penalties. God has given many things in life to enjoy (1 Tim. 6:17), but it is not without responsibility (1 Tim. 6:20-21). There will always be a challenge to keep life balanced. In order to keep a balanced life, seek Christ first (Matt: 10:33). Eccl. 11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy heart, and let thy heart cheer thee REMOVE V. 10 Remove sorrow from thy flesh, and put away evil from thy flesh. HOW? REMEMBER 12:1 Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth, before the evil days come.

At his pinning ceremony, he was honored to have his father pin his shield. After a stellar career in the military, he is continuing to excel. He is the son of Bro. and Sis. Roland Petit-Frere. Shakima Wimbley made history at the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships, becoming the first athlete in ACC history to win eight conference titles in the 200m. Shakima secured her fourth consecutive ACC outdoor title and eighth overall conference championship in the women's 200m final with a time of seconds. She defended her 400m title with an NCAA-leading time of seconds, setting ACC, ACC Championship & UM records. Shakima also graduated earlier this month with a bachelor s degree from the University of Miami. She closed her ACC career with eight 200m titles, seven 400m titles, three 4x100m titles and five 4x400m titles. I n every moment there are peril and pestilence.
