1 Bulletin #1460 May 14, 2017 From The Minister s Pen Mother s Day appy Mother s Day to all of the H mothers and grandmothers among us! The history of Mother s Day as a national holiday is attributed to Anna Jarvis. In 1908, Ms. Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, WV. Jarvis s mother passed in 1905, and she began working to see that our nation would set aside a day to honor our mothers. The first state to officially declare a Mother s Day holiday was West Virginia (Jarvis s home state) in In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation creating Mother s Day as a national holiday, to be celebrated on the second Sunday of each May. In a thank you note to President Wilson, Anna Jarvis wrote of this as a way for our country to honor their mothers and fathers in a way that will perpetuate family ties and give emphasis to true home life. After the eventual commercialization of Mother s Day, the true meaning of honoring mothers as she had intended was missed. Jarvis original intention was for children to appreciate and honor your mother by writing a personal letter, by hand, expressing love and gratitude. Most of our nation s holidays have little or nothing to do with God s spiritual instructions for us, His children. But that is certainly not the case with Mother s Day or Father s Day. Although these are not religious holidays or special spiritual days to New Testament Christians, the precepts embodied in Anna Jarvis s original intentions for Mother s Day are very biblical. Mothers deserve a day in their honor. All living human beings owe their earthly existence to mother. Many Christians owe their Christian life to their mothers. A mother, human as she is, is that wonderful creature whose love knows no bounds, is never wavering, never waning. A mother, perhaps, is the rarest of all of God s creation. One s mother is a very strong force in a child s life. The Scriptures recognize the power of a mother s influence. Paul reminded Timothy of the vital role his mother Eunice had on his life and faith. When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also (2 Tim. 1:5). Timothy s faith was genuine and unwavering. While Timothy s biblical faith came from the Word of God (Rom. 10:17), his faith was deeply influenced by his mother Lois. That is the way it should be.

2 Page 2 John 19:26-27 states, When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman behold thy son! Then He said to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own house. It s hard to believe that even as Jesus was on the cross, bearing the weight of the sins of the whole world on His shoulders, He saw to it that His mother was to be cared for after He was gone. This example by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, shows us how important it is to take care and love our mothers. Think upon the following ways to show your mother that you truly love her every day, not just on this Mother s Day. Love her verbally: Let your mother know that you love her by telling her often. Children need to hear their mothers and grandmothers being told, I Love You, by their fathers and grandfathers. Express your love for your mother while she is still alive. Don t be reluctant to express your feelings. One day she will no longer be with you. Love her physically: mother has done many things for you since you were born. How many times did she hold or hug you growing up? Does she not deserve your touch in the form of a hug or kiss? Love her patiently: Mothers have a difficult job with no pay. We should never become impatient and expect her to do things for us just because she always has. Do not take advantage of her. Unfortunately, some people treat others better than they treat their own mother. Love her attentively: Mothers are always available to listen as their children pour out their hearts to them. Many, even as adults, have gone to their mothers for advice. Now as our mothers age and need to talk, we need to be there to listen to them. Love her generously: How much has your mother given up so that you might have plenty. We can never repay her, but we should try. She gave up her own opportunities to provide opportunities for us. She denied herself so that we might have. Love her honorably: Exodus 20:12 states, Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Of all of the ten commandments, this is the only one with a promise of blessing. Let us never to be too busy for our mothers. If the Lord could take time and great effort for His mother while He was hanging on the cross, surely we should love our mothers while we have them in our lives. If your mother and grandmother are not alive to thank them with a personal letter or a phone call, you should thank and praise God that they were placed in your life, especially if they were Christian women. Their life lives on in their children, who still rise up and call you blessed. We pray that you will honor your mother today, and everyday, as God instructs and as Anna Jarvis recommended. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. PROVERBS 31:30 Wishing you God s unending favor, kindness and love this and always.
